Update on the Senate Races

It looks like Norm Colemas has beaten Al Franken.

The Alaska and Oregon races are in doubt. UPDATE: Stevens and Young won. Wow.

In Georgia, the networks pulled back their cal on Saxby Chambliss. He is now below 50%, meaning he may go into a runoff. There are tens of thousands of outstanding ballots and some delays in Democrat territory with a habit of vote stealing. It may be a runoff.

1) Disagreeing with the President on foreign policy during a time of war is treason.

and

2) The office of the Vice President is a unique position that is not subject to Congressional oversight.

Wow, but you're going to hate the next four years.

OR Senate Turnaround?!

I went to bed last night thinking Blue was the new Red. I was sure that Smith had lost his seat. Now it looks like he’ll hang on. “Though sorrow may last for the night, joy comes with the morning.”

Does the GOP ask Stevens to resign from the caucus

or in its quest to keep power let me stay. Maybe this isn’t an option, but for the sake of the future Ted has to go. Good to see the dems are sore losers and winners, at least they’re consistent.

Wait, my thoughts are subject to federal law?

You can get results from the Oregon Secretary of State

Last night I thought it was done, now it appears that Multlohma county is still counting. It will come down to how many boxes they find under a stairwell.

Maybe

JoeG Wednesday, November 5th at 10:53AM EST (link)

Alaska passed a citizen initiative in 2004 that says the seat stays vacant until a special election to be held 60 to 90 days after the vaccancy.

This may not stand up to a constitutional challenge because the 17th amendment states that a Governor gets to appoint to fill vacancies until a replacement is elected.

Oregon is always slow

Darin_H (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 11:18AM EST (link)

they’re always slow here. I think it’s because we’re 100% mail in ballots. The ballots have to be in the drop boxes (like mailboxes) by 8pm. It was like this in 2006 and 2004 (I wasn’t here prior to that). Oregon wasn’t called for Kerry for a while 4 years ago.

Some Faqs:

When are ballots counted?

All ballots are counted on election day – none are counted before. No results can be released until 8:00 p.m. on election night. County election officials may begin preparing ballots for counting no sooner than the Tuesday prior to election day. The ballots are then secured until counted on election day.

When will election results be known?

Ballot counting cannot begin until election day. Initial results are released at 8:00 p.m. election night and will continue to be updated throughout the evening until all ballots have been counted. Visit our web site shortly after 8:00 p.m. election night for updated live election results.

I don’t know why they don’t have the results quicker, seems like they could start counting right away on election day.

Do the Right Thing

Good_Captain Wednesday, November 5th at 11:21AM EST (link)

As another blog post said, “embrace the wilderness”. This doesn’t mean we should be happy we’re here but it means we need to learn the lessons on the reason(s) we are here and be diligent in addressing those reasons.

W/ that in mind, I think we must “force” Stevens to resign. If we pursue the Demo strategy of backing their own even when they are substantially wrong, we set ourselves on the same rotten path.

Lets come out of this desert experience w/ a new party of real honor and principle. Stevens, Young and others of their ilk (typical of the most appropriators) often represent that which the common person can’t stand – the pay to play appearance, real or otherwise. While I am not proposing ex-communicating hoardes of sitting Rs, I do think we must draw a line w/ convicted members of Congress.

Sorry for the rant,

BlueLandRed (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 11:34AM EST (link)

but I wonder if Gov Palin wants Stevens’ job. If so, she’s unlikely to push to appoint someone as it’s generally considered bad form to nominate yourself.

And even if she doesn’t, the population of Alaska made it pretty clear that they wanted the job of picking a Senator when this sort of thing happens, so I doubt it’s worth it to her to go against the will of the people. She’s still very popular up there, but her image has taken a bit of beating.

There’s also a timing issue. Stevens is going to be kicked out, but exactly when hasn’t been determined. I suspect it will be after the first of year.

This is yet anpther reason

I really hope Chambliss breaks 50 so we don't have to burn money.

spainishirish (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 11:42AM EST (link)

Nonetheless, I’m happy our Senate losses were kept to a minimum. As for Stevens, I’ll just act like a Democrat, claim he is innocent, and insist that he stay until his appeal is final. Then I want Palin in the Senate breathing down the Democrats’ necks.

Fortunately, and I will have to recheck for the exact numbers, the terrain is very good to retake the Senate (and maybe even the House if Obama overreaches) in 2010.

ummm, no.

Raven (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 11:47AM EST (link)

Perhaps you should take some time to educate yourself on Stevens, his history, the “trial” and the history of Alaska. Particularly the political history of Alaska and its relationship with certain other states.
It’d be helpful.

Stevens was going to win. The only question was by how much.

There are Reasons we have re-elected him every single time. And there are only 3 ways he’s going to be replaced: Dies in office (probably literally, found with his head on his desk); retires; or thrown out by means other than the voters.

He wasn’t guilty of anything and this Farce of a trial was only pursued because they thought they could get him with the splash damage from his son (who, let’s make no mistake, is as guilty as the day is long in Barrow in July).

Maybe I should do a diary on the trial…

pa_scientist Wednesday, November 5th at 11:55AM EST (link)

Wouldn’t the GOP have far more to gain by calling for Stevens’ resignation? It would send a strong anti-corruption message and allow Palin to appoint at truly conservative senator.

If Stevens stays on, he will be a ridiculously ineffective senator. Who is going to want to work with him?

Constitution and Senate vacancies

reldim (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 12:14PM EST (link)

Actually the Constitution says that the Governor “shall issue writs of election to fill the vacancy” but allows the State Legislature to provide the Governor with appointment power. Most states have opted for the latter, with a special election being delayed until the next regular election (in an even-numbered year, blah blah).

So, unless the Alaska Legislature has provided the Palin with the power to make a long-term appointment, the citizen initiative should stand against any challenge to it. At best Palin would get to appoint someone to fill in for the period prior to the special election.

I’m thinking this question may be answered somewhere out there, but I’m not sure – the question would be whether the Senate refusing to seat Stevens, or in the alternative, expelling him from the Senate, creates a “vacancy” in the seat. If Stevens refuses to resign before or after that event, he technically is still the duly-elected holder of the seat even if his fellow Senators won’t let him in the door. Wonder what happens in that case. If only I had time to look it up.

The 2010 Terrain

reldim (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 12:31PM EST (link)

Is not terribly good. The list of seats up for election:

Bayh (IN)
Bennett (UT)
Bond (MO)
Boxer (CA)
Brownback (KS)
Bunning (KY)
Burr (NC)
Coburn (OK)
Crapo (ID)
DeMint (SC)
Dodd (CT)
Dorgan (ND)
Feingold (WI)
Grassley (IA)
Gregg (NH)
Inouye (HI)
Isakson (GA)
Leahy (VT)
Lincoln (AR)
Martinez (FL)
McCain (AZ)
Mikulski (MD)
Murkowski (AK)
Murray (WA)
Obama’s Replacement (IL)
Reid (NV)
Salazar (CO)
Schumer (NY)
Shelby (AL)
Specter (PA)
Thune (SD)
Vitter (LA)
Voinovich (OH)
Wyden (OR)

I don’t see all that many opportunities in there that aren’t countered by tough roads on our side. If Brownback retires (he might), then Sibelius will probably run and we’ll have a tough race in KS. We’ll probably do a lot of work defending Bond in MO, Martinez in FL, Gregg in NH, possibly the seat in IA (not sure if Grassley will retire), Burr in NC, Voinovich in OH, probably an open seat in KY (Bunning is not a good candidate and almost lost in 2004), and maybe AZ if McCain also decides to retire.

Meanwhile, Bayh is still almost unassailable in IN, as is Lincoln in AR (unless Huckabee decides to pitch his hat in for that), Dorgan could be a target if we get a strong candidate who can raise money, Reid will be a target especially if he remains as majority leader, and maybe Salazar. But half of those seats being competitive almost require that the Democrats go overboard – most of those guys are popular and have been able to sell themselves as moderates, unless the Senate goes off the edge (a possibility) AND these guys go with them (also possible) AND we have the resources and the candidates to get that message to the voters (a total unknown), they will probably cruise to the win the same way Tim Johnson did in SD this year.

The landscape is one that could result in a gain (depending on how well the GOP organizes and how dreadful the Democrats turn out to be) but 2010 is not set up to produce a net 7-seat gain for us (which is what we’d need if we win all the outstanding races since there will be a Democratic VP in the chair).

The House is even worse since we’d need a shift of 1994 levels, which I’m not sure is possible even if the Democrats lose their minds. It really depends on whether the House GOP caucus can put together a platform and nationalize the election in response to excesses the way Gingrich was able to.

A good chunk of Stevens's vote

Illinicon (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 12:39PM EST (link)

is likely from Republicans who want him out, but realize a vote for him was a vote for a special election since he is likely to be thrown out due to his conviction. That was the vote I would have made if I was voting in Alaska. Makes no sense to elect a Democrat to a 6 year term, when you can elect a good conservative like Parnell in 6 months.

Georgia Senate

reldim (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 12:40PM EST (link)

So what is the story with things there. It looks like Chambliss is close but not quite at 50%. What’s the story with the runoff if one is required and what are Saxby’s chances if it goes to that?

candidate recruitment is key

Illinicon (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 12:59PM EST (link)

that means we need to throw out the bad incumbents, which in 2010 is Bunning. A generic Republican in Kentucky likely wins by atleast 6 points. We need to get Arnold to run for Boxer’s seat as that is are only hope in CA. Huckabee can likely give Lincoln a race in AR. Hoeven could put ND in play. Obama’s seat can even be a pickup if Blagojevich makes a dumb pick (there is some talk Jesse Jr. could be the pick) if we run a moderate who can appeal to suburban Chicago like Mark Kirk who won by a healthy margin despite the Obama surge in turnout here.

My Potus shortlist

declared candidates:

1. Tim Pawlenty
2. Herman Cain
3. Gary Johnson
4. Rick Santorum

4. Herman Cain

I imagine his chances would be good

Illinicon (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 1:02PM EST (link)

because there would likely be a decline in the black turnout in the special election, from where it was yesterday.

My Potus shortlist

My concern was more

reldim (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 1:39PM EST (link)

That we have a lot of seats to defend that are in tough states (FL, MO, NH, OH) and a couple of races that could become tough if they become open seats (IA and KS) and a couple more that may be tough depending (NC, KY). That’s a lot of money to be spent on defense.

Unfortunately, we have no ripe low-hanging fruit to attack in 2010 – the Democrats mainly defend seats in distinctly blue territory, and the few red state members who will be up have huge advantages and have won before with huge margins despite their states (Dorgan, Bayh, Lincoln).

In a strictly neutral year, I don’t see how the GOP makes big gains in the Senate with this lineup. The GOP will need 2010 to be tilted in their favor so that some of their seats become safer (FL, MO, NC, KS), some of the red state Dems become real targets (making it possible to recruit strong challengers) and puts a couple of blue states on the map (maybe WA, IL depending, CO, NV).

Right now, the first thing to start working on is getting a Republican elected to succeed Tim Kaine in Virginia. I don’t believe the state is lost for all time, but the GOP there definitely needs to recognize the changing terrain. The AG should be a strong candidate and, while I have been away from the DC area for a year, I did not perceive Tim Kaine to be as wildly popular as his predecessor was, so I don’t see any sort of great coattail/successor helping the Dems (they have no natural successor anyway as the LtGov and AG are both Republicans).
