Let’s just call Tom Cole (R-OK), the head of the NRCC, what he is: a douchebag.
Some of you will be upset by the language, but I think it is an accurate description.
We chronicled for you the need to ditch Tom Cole from the NRCC months ago. Sure, we knew it was going to be a bad year, but Cole seemed more interested in the perks of the office than actually trying to mitigate damages.
Cole defended Don Young.
He also defended Rick Renzi despite the criminal investigation that forced Renzi from office.
And while Rome was burning, Cole fiddled away demanding an apology to Indians.
Now, in the height of all douchebaggery, he has pulled all funding from Michelle Bachmann’s very winnable race in Minnesota, in which she is presently leading, though not by a great deal.
Why? Because Bachmann had the nerve to point out Obama pals around with anti-American domestic terrorists and other unsavory characters, i.e. she’s echoed Sarah Palin.
But that’s okay. Apparently we have Republicans to spare.
Help Michelle Bachmann. This race is absolutely winnable. Hell, she’s winning right now. But she needs our help.
And then call Tom Cole and give him a piece of your mind.
UPDATED: For perspective, Tom Cole has been sending money to Don Young in Alaska. So attacking the Democrats is unacceptable to Tom Cole, but taint and corruption is perfectly fine.
You still upset I called him a douchebag?

Cole & Bachmann Screwed Up
Doctor Biobrain Wednesday, October 22nd at 6:11PM EST (link)As I suggested yesterday on a similar post, I think defending Bachmann is kind of a mistake. Of course, this close to the election, it probably makes sense to defend her as every seat counts. And it definitely wasn’t smart for Cole to publicly throw her under the bus like this, especially as it makes Bachmann look guilty and sends out a message that Republicans are in disarray. So while I agree that what Cole did was a douchey thing to do, Bachmann really didn’t do Republicans any favors by saying what she said.
Just see this from the other side: Wouldn’t you LOVE it if a Dem said something that inspired Republican donors to throw a million dollars at a no-name Republican challenger? Wouldn’t you LOVE it if the Dem had to keep trying to justify what they had said, keeping the heat on them? Even as it is, Bachmann insists that she didn’t say what she said, while basically repeating what she had said. And that’s what you want your opponent doing, while you stay on the offensive. She just walked right into this one, just a few weeks before the election. That’s not smart politics.
And the main thing is that it doesn’t matter if you agree with what she said. Because conclusion-based arguments don’t convince anyone. Bachmann talking about Obama’s connections to Ayers and Wright might convince someone, as it’s evidence. But going straight to the verdict by saying that his views are anti-American won’t convince anyone and sound offensive to people who don’t already agree with her. Voters want to hear arguments for why a candidate is good/bad; not labels like “anti-American”. And they want to make up their own minds based on the evidence; they don’t want to be told what to think.
So overall, I really think that Bachmann stepped into it and that it might not be wise to reward this sort of behavior. Like it or not, politics is strictly about appearances and Bachmann’s statement appears to have been a million dollar mistake. But again, every seat counts so this probably wasn’t the right time for Cole to pull the funds away, and he probably just made things worse.
Hey
1SGinTN (Diary) Wednesday, October 22nd at 6:30PM EST (link)The Dems sure don’t have a problem with their candidates offending someone’s sensibilities. To risk losing a seat because the candidate said something ‘controversial’ is madness. How does that compare with keeping a shady pol in the race? I called Cole’s office and left a message. Although I didn’t call him a douchebag, I told him he “needs to get his mind right”. Now I guess I need to pony-up for the MN race.

Doctor Biobrain Wednesday, October 22nd at 6:37PM EST (link)I wrote that Bachmann made a million dollar mistake, but just learned that while the NRCC is pulling funds, the DCCC has apparently agreed to send another million to Bachmann’s opponent. Thus making this a two million dollar mistake on Bachmann’s part.
You can agree with the principle of what she said, but the politics was horrible. Don’t get me wrong, principle is very important. But without good politics, it doesn’t win elections. Sad, but true.

Pragmatism, Not Principle
Doctor Biobrain Wednesday, October 22nd at 7:01PM EST (link)Well I don’t think that Cole pulled the funds because of the controversy. I’d guess that he did it because he felt the funds would be better used elsewhere. And that would mean that either he thinks she’s a shoo-in, or he thinks it’s over for her. After all, this is going to be a tight election everywhere, and every dollar counts.
Of course, I have to wonder at the logic of pulling funds from a tight race that the other side is throwing millions into. So presumably, Cole doesn’t think this is a tight race. I’m no mind-reader, but if it makes you feel better, you can assume that he has internals that show Bachmann blowing out her opponent. And if that’s what happens on Election Day, Cole will look like a genius for using his funds wisely. But if she loses a close race…he’s a douche.

Hi, Erick. I’m not offended. The word is certainly indelicate, but it’s not a profanity. It certainly gets across the depth of your negative feeling about this decision. Mr. Cole is not keeping the big picture in mind. Don Young has been indicted for a crime. He is defending that seat only because Democrats registered as Republicans so they could defeat Sean Parnell in the primary and keep a tainted, wounded Republican on the ballot against the Democratic nominee. Michelle Bachmann is a new foot-soldier on the GOP team. She screwed up. It happens. She’ll learn and get better. If we hope to hold enough seats to fend off the worst instincts of the Democratic majority we cannot throw her away.

Maybe they are seeing it as giving her the boost that makes her race a safe bet.
While Cole is worthy of criticism, I’ll hold off on this one till after election day. Funds are limited and I can’t fathom he is pulling the money out of close races. Ensign deserves a pass on this
walter_hanson Thursday, October 23rd at 1:24AM EST (link)Illicon:
I think Senator Ensign deserves a pass here:
He had to defend 25 seats out of 35 up for reelection.
The Democrats out for blood still had Schummer, his fund raising advantage from antiwar groups
The Senate races are hurting in part because of Obama. Virginia might have been a lost cause, but thanks to Obama’s race and his desire to try to make southern states competitive it’s hurt Dole, Wicker, and Chamblis.
Unlike 2006 where we were losing senate seats in states carried by Bush (some by big margins) we had two seats that were blue and based on lower level state races very blue (Minnesota and New Hampshire)
He had three seats where if the member had just run for reelection they would have easily (Ellard, Deminici, and Warner).
He had two seats where the incumbent had done great harm to us retaining the seat even if the incumbent hadn’t run (Alaska and Idaho)
Ensign I’ve heard on the radio giving interviews and have seen articles where he gave interviews. Cole? Isn’t he an actor that played the Vice President on the West Wing. Oh that’s another Cole.
Then to top it off the economic problems of late September dragged down every Republican Senate candidate.
I had hopes early this year the loss might be zero or just one seat. Now it will be higher, but despite the nightmare scenario it won’t be democrats to sixty. And the fact that it doesn’t get to sixty is because of Ensign’s hard work.
