Gauging Governor Palin’s Popularity

The site Team Sarah has quickly taken off. It’s not an organized effort, but rather organic and grassroots in nature.

Starting off with just a few members, the site has ballooned to thousands from across the nation. There has been minimal exposure, minimal promotion, and zero advertising.

And it is starting to get interesting. They’ve taken their online efforts off line, having press conferences defending and promoting Sarah Palin. This thing has real legs and they are mobilizing.

October should be a very interesting month.

C’mon folks: Palin was the Governor of Alaska, Joe Biden was Governor of Meet the Press. I go with Alaska every time.

I'm doing all I can.

But this woman touches people. An example: at a dinner party the other night, a life-long Democrat who is 26 years old had watched the debate. He loved her. He is voting for McCain-Palin now (we had the best talk about politics I’ve ever had with a now former Obama supporter).

Saturday morning, a campaign rep called me because I’d emailed in hopes of grabbing a pic or a sound bite from Palin when she comes to Jax on Tues. There won’t be time, she told me.

I proceeded to give her an earful. She probably thinks I’m nuts. But I told her this is a war and if we’re going to win it we have to fight it like it’s a war. We had a great long talk. And like I said, she probably thinks I’m nuts.

I don’t care. My country is about to be stolen if I don’t stand up and speak out. That makes it all worth it to me.

Palin’s powers of persuasion are far greater than I gave her credit for. I’m wondering if June Lockhart of “Lassie” or whoever played Beaver Cleaver’s mom could have swayed me when I was younger had she happened to had the same qualifications.

Palin touches people

Watching her in the debate you either love her or hate her. I have heard from both sides the hate side is so nasty it just drives me crazy. The love side is with her and is increasing.

Brilliant!

If Sarah Palin had uttered something half that stupid, she’d have been hounded out of the race by now.

That’s how he described himself–he’s voted for Dems in every election, local, state and national since he turned 18. And he said his family members are all Dems. Glad you gave me an opp to elaborate on that!

…you will see that it belongs to Ralph Benko – a relatively well-known Web 2.0 activist. He has his own page on the site, where he describs his role as follows:

It was my privilege to provide just a bit of technical support to some powerful women to create a space where thousands can come together inspired by Sarah Palin and the values for which she stands. It’s a tribute to Governor Palin, to the site’s real founders, to you, and to all the members of this community that it’s so vibrant.

Obviously, you can choose to disbelieve him, but tarring the site by reflexive guilt by geographical association strikes me as pure prejudice.

Is Sarah Palin good for the GOP?

jamielove Sunday, October 5th at 4:07PM EST (link)

To a lot of voters, like me, but also apparently George Will and others, Sarah Palin’s lack of knowledge about just about everything outside of gas pipelines and a handful of social issues is (or should be) an embarrassment for the GOP. I can’t see that she really improves the brand, overall, unless the brand is just about being on the right, and not about being right about anything in particular.

Yeah, so?

That link certainly clears up Palin’s qualifications. I mean, anybody good enough for Lassie, right?
I’ll still most likely hold my nose, suppress my vomit, and vote for McCain. This total insult that Palin is somehow remotely qualified to lead the greatest and most powerful nation on earth is not only disturbing, it’s absolutely scary.

Less scary..

I guess that's progress. Before the talking point was that Palin knew *nothing* at all.

Martin Knight (Diary) Sunday, October 5th at 6:39PM EST (link)

Now she knows about gas lines and social issues. Before you know it, she’ll reveal that she knows something about taxes, healthcare and education.

Heh, not only that she is more qualified...

but she has lived the everyday life and understands their problems…not something you can truthfully say about the other candidates (professional politicians – usually multi-millionaires – but hey, they speak nicely…don’t you think?).

Refreshing isn’t it? You think that may have something to do with her popularity? Mercy, it would be nice to throw the lot of them out of office and elect a batch of Palins in all of the elective offices.

I can dream…

I’ve never claimed to be the sharpest knife in the drawer but people tell me I catch on easily. Please allow me to impose on your good nature to help me out on this issue.

It's about Palin's experience, rj

Neil Stevens (Diary) Sunday, October 5th at 8:39PM EST (link)

You’re asserting that Palin is not only unqualified, but laughably unqualified, for the Presidency.

Her current position is Governor of Alaska. Governors hold the second highest executive offices you can hold in the United States of America.

So the only conclusion I can draw from these two facts, is that you don’t think all Governors are equal, and that we in the West don’t have ‘real’ states with ‘real’ Governors or something.

Please do back up your outrageously silly pronouncements with facts and reasoning, though, if you object to my assumptions. I’m only left to fill in the gaps because you’re providing so little to work with in your unbecoming attacks on Governor Palin.

Rod_Patrick (Diary) Sunday, October 5th at 10:09PM EST (link)

It’s good that Palin doesn’t know so much about the old issues.

Said old issues are the reasons why GOP stinks and why some ranks split from the party.

Palin doesn’t have to know everything. She thinks like one of us making her “common sense” works all the time. That’s all we need…common sense.

Common sense is what the DC, Old Timer Rep, and the Dem Party lack.

If you want someone who knows everything, may be you should have designed a SUPER ROBOT to be your President.

The debate knows that Palin has natural instinct in Foreign Policy.

used to be a common bumper sticker here in Alaska. People like you are the reason why.

I spent twenty years as a high-level bureaucrat and appointee in the Alaska government. I knew most of my peers in all those oh-so-sophistocated states down South. I dealt with the same investment firms, consultants, unions, and other interest groups as they did. I saw more than enough of what they did and how they did it to know that I could do their job and they couldn’t do mine.

Governing Alaska is more like governing a country than a state and is more like running a multi-national corporation than running a government. The Lower 48 media has developed the welfare state meme about Alaska largely because of federal spending here. First, the Federal government has a huge presence here and spends a lot of money for its own purposes rather than directly to or for the State of Alaska. Second, in furtherance of US energy policy we allowed Prudhoe Bay to be developed at the highest uplift rate of any major field in the World in order to help drive down the OPEC price in the ’80s. We were giving the oil away to help finance the boom in the Lower 48, so we did our best to get our hands in that burgeoning federal treasury. While we were a District and a Territory, the US grossly neglected Alaska and we still don’t have most of the things in much of the State that are taken for granted even in the poorest Lower 48 states – like roads and bridges! OK, we now know how you all feel about that, so it’ll be a cold day in Hell when we throw Alaska oil on the market again, and, no, I don’t care if your SUV is a lawn ornament. And, even in our “porkier” period when the price of oil was so low, most years the State’s largest source of revenue was neither oil nor federal revenue but investment earnings off the Permanent Fund.

In any event, ANY governor or public executive is more qualified for executive office than ANY Senator – period.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
