As you probably know by now, Gwen Ifill, the debate moderator for the Vice Presidential Debate, has a financial interest in Barack Obama winning the election.
Ifill is the author of The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama, a new book scheduled for release on Inauguration Day. Its Amazon.com promotional statement says, “In ‘The Breakthrough,’ veteran journalist Gwen Ifill surveys the American political landscape, shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama’s stunning presidential campaign and introducing the emerging young African American politicians forging a bold new path to political power.”
Ms. Ifill did not disclose her book deal to the McCain campaign before the campaign approved her selection as a debate moderator. Obviously this situation is unacceptable. Ms. Ifill has a financial incentive to do no harm to the Obama campaign and has an incentive to harm the McCain campaign in order to help Barack Obama.
If you are as concerned about this as I am, you can call Paula Kerger, the CEO of PBS at (703) 739-8619 and Sharon Rockefeller, the CEO of WETA in Washington, D.C. at (703) 998-2089 and ask them to have Ms. Ifill recuse herself or, if they refuse, insist that Ms. Ifill fully disclose her conflict of interest.
By the way, tonight Gwen Ifill is subtly raising the race card in this issue. Behold:
“Do you think they made the same assumptions about Lou Cannon (who is white) when he wrote his book about Reagan?” said Ifill, who is black. Asked if there were racial motives at play, she said, “I don’t know what it is. I find it curious.”
Maybe, just maybe it is her coverage thus far, including her end of the night coverage after Sarah Palin spoke at the Republican Convention and the title of her book. “The Age of Obama”?!? Yeah, that’s not hagiographic.

Ms Ifill might want to race the color of her skin as the issue but....
JadedByPolitics (Diary) Wednesday, October 1st at 10:24PM EST (link)it is the color of her politics that is the issue….one who is so blue cannot be unbiased!
I would additionally add that one who has a boatload of money riding on Obama winning the election cannot ever be unbiased…..money rules!

I’m sure someone else can step up and do her job there anyway, so dropping out works. But we all know that is not going to happen.
Oh, Please.
Enorman Wednesday, October 1st at 10:55PM EST (link)The McCain camp approved her as a moderator knowing full well about this book over a month ago. Do we really need to keep lowering the bar for Gov. Palin by making excuse after excuse? Let them debate and make your own assumptions.
On the other hand...
PSDA (Diary) Wednesday, October 1st at 11:09PM EST (link)You could make the case that a biased MSM moderator who also a racially-blinded Obamabot is the IDEAL person for maximizing Palin’s returns during this debate.
Ifill has the potential to put on full display a great many things that are major liabilities for Obama with middle Amerida.
I’ll also say that if Palin can’t thrust and parry with the likes of Ifill, then she shouldn’t be there. I think she’ll do fine.
Actually, by their own statements, neither
septembergurl (Diary) Wednesday, October 1st at 11:09PM EST (link)the Debate Commission nor the McCain campaign were aware of Ifill’s book. That’s because she didn’t tell them. No doubt you have info to the contrary, so let’s hear it.

What needs to happen is that this idiotic
septembergurl (Diary) Wednesday, October 1st at 11:22PM EST (link)Debate Commission needs to be de-credentialed. What is it, anyway?
The Presidential debates exist for the sole purpose of helping out the democratic nominee. There is no other purpose. Because the Dem nominees are usually extreme left-wingers, and their positions are repellent and idiotic, the debates exist to make them palatable to the American voter. They have the additional function of weakening the republican.
Whatever happens in any debate, the Democrat is always the winner. That will be the case tomorrow, no matter what actually happens.
These debates are really the last frantic attempt by the MSM to retain some credibility in political contests. But why oh why do Republicans enable them? The next Presidential contest should feature actual debates with people like Rick Warren running them. He did a far better job in showing what the two candidates are really like than any number of MSM shills. Republicans need to stop playing along.
I love Sen McCain, but when he says Ifill is a professional, what is he talking about? She’s (a) highly partisan, as her book and her omments at the RNC show (b) not very bright (c) very unprofessional.
I have to say though, that I think it will be better to have her as moderator when she is on the defensive and has to explain herself. It could be entertaining if Sarah takes it to her.
I'd be fine with that.

gensec (Diary) Wednesday, October 1st at 11:33PM EST (link)If the McCain-Palin campaign is too domesticated to make an issue of Ifill’s financial conflict of interest, no amount of valid complaints from the rest of us will make any difference. McCain couldn’t even bring himself to make some snarky comment about it? Doesn’t he have any clue how to run a campaign without the media on his side?
I won’t give up until the election is over, but the main lesson for next season is don’t nominate somebody that’s not a competent politician. Being a skilled politician is by itself nowhere close to sufficient for nominating someone as our Presidential candidate, but it is an absolute necessity (except for those who enjoy the feeling of indignation during the Democrat’s presidency).
There are absolutely
BlueLandRed (Diary) Wednesday, October 1st at 11:34PM EST (link)people that can do her job… if they have time to prep. But, the debate is suppose to start in less then 20 hours. It’s really too late to find someone else.
A postponement is an option, but after last week, I really don’t think that having the McCain camp propose it it would be a good idea, the Dems would try and exploit as a weakness.

Sarah can do it!
Somebody needs to take a deep breath...
SomeNorCalGuy Thursday, October 2nd at 1:00AM EST (link)I fail to see why anyone should have a problem with Gwen Ifill as moderator of the VP debate. She is an African American woman who wrote a book about African American politicians and that book has the name of the most prominant African American politician of all time in the title.
Seriously?
This woman is one of the most respected names in American journalism.
If she was smart enough and non-partisan enough to moderate the Dick Cheney/John Edwards debate four years ago, then she’s good enough now. If you don’t believe me that she was fair as a moderator four years ago, then just read the transcript here.
She was fair handed to both, but maybe a little snippy with Cheney on time.
Playing the “Gwen Ifill’s a racist card” just makes you look bad and desperate. Again: If Dick Cheney could handle being moderated by her, then she is good enough for Sarah Palin.
Somebody needs to take a deep breath. Seriously people, get a damn grip. Let Sarah be Sarah and all will be well.
P.S. Saying that Ifill is in the tank for Obama because she’s black and wrote a book about black politicians makes about as much sense as saying that she’s in the tank for Sarah Palin because she’s a woman.
I'm Not - She Should Be *Gone*
IJB Thursday, October 2nd at 1:04AM EST (link)But this is the Legacy Media we’re talking about – not only will Ifill not be gone, the rest of the Press will rise to her defense in as shrill a manner as possible, and Ifill will now get the “word” (in backchannels, natch) to hold nothing back in going after Palin.
At this point, I doubt Joe Biden will even get a word in edgewise – Ifill will go after Palin like a rabid attack dog.
I hope the McCain/Palin campaign has considered this, and worked up contingencies for Palin.
I expect this is about to get very ugly…
Will She Be Able To Do The Same To Ifill?
IJB Thursday, October 2nd at 1:09AM EST (link)Of course not.
If Ifill goes after her, Palin will either have to take on Ifill (which will look bad, and then the Press will hammer for her for it), or she’ll just have to sit back and take it (also looks bad).
I actually think, when this news broke, that the McCain campaign should have pulled out of the debates. But they’re so far behind now, I think they were afraid to do that.
Now they’re hosed either way.
The Press really seems to be running this election. Which means Obama is looking more and more like a shoo-in.
(Unfortunately for the Lefty Press, the rules change in January, and there’s nothing they can do to “manage” that circumstance…)

Obama on Payday Lending
paydayloanadvocate Thursday, October 2nd at 2:58AM EST (link)The payday loan industry is in danger because there are politicians who wish to wipe out the entire industry. But that is not what is best for the people. For instance, in Georgia, the bankruptcy filings, bounced checks and foreclosures all skyrocketed after the cash advance product was done away with. With no disregard for these negative statistics, following the closure of payday loans in these states, several other governors continue to try and follow suit. Top national politicians are now stepping out in hopes of wiping the industry completely off the map. Should such politicians succeed, there is a big possibility that there will be increased unemployment rates, more debt, more foreclosures and an even more damaged economy.

OccamsRazor (Diary) Thursday, October 2nd at 3:01AM EST (link)No Doubt.
Ifill's conflict of interest is the issue, not her bias
Laura (Diary) Thursday, October 2nd at 3:05AM EST (link)Whether it was a pro-Obama book or a pro-Palin book, for that matter, the point is that she will benefit materially from one outcome of the presidential elections more than the other potential outcome.
Basic business ethics would dictate that one should disclose even potential for perceived conflict of interest. Seriously! If she were planning to sell t-shirts with one candidate’s name on them, and not the other’s…that’s where we arrive at the conflict of interest.
We have conflict of interest at the title of the book. Bias can only be established by assessing the content…which she alleges has not yet been written.
This is a very different issue from all those that she raised in her statement today. She responded to allegations of bias, and we have discussed that topic here, at length.
One day after beginning to mull this over, and I realize that the lack of neutrality bothers me, but the personal gain that she stands to reap from an Obama victory is the real issue.
And it has nothing to do with race.
And I’m pretty offended that she implies that I am a racist for having simple ethics-based concerns. Don’t all races share a basic, human sense of right and wrong?
It’s not a Fairness Doctrine issue to me.
And it is definitely not a Civil Rights issue. It is an issue of moral capitalism, pure and simple.
Yeah! Ifill's a MEANEY!
lefty Thursday, October 2nd at 3:09AM EST (link)At this point, I doubt Joe Biden will even get a word in edgewise – Ifill will go after Palin like a rabid attack dog.
Just like that mean, vicious Katie Couric attacked her… How unfair that was! How dare she ask her trick questions like what magazines she reads!
Geeze, are you people high or what? The absolute best thing Ifill could do for your candidates chances would be for her to attack Palin. If Ifill shows even the slightest bias, you will be all over her, along with Rush, Billo, everybody on Fox… The Republican base will be rallied and they will turn out on election day to support poor Ms. Palin. Judging from the Couric interview, Palin will have a hard enough time surviving the debate on her own, so doing anything beyond being utterly fair is completely unnecessary.
I actually agree that Ifill should have done a better job of disclosing this book, but not because there’s any conflict of interest, only because there is the APPEARANCE of a conflict. She’s been in the media long enough that she should have known better.
That said, the worst thing that could possibly happen to Palin is to change the moderator now. Not only has she had plenty of time to study Ifill and learn the types of questions she asks, etc., if they change the moderator now, you guys lose this whole line of post-debate spin. Unless the whole Couric interview was the most extreme attempt at expectation-lowering ever, you’ll need all the spin you can get.
And this has to do with the VP debate how?

If McCain asks to postpone...
lefty Thursday, October 2nd at 3:25AM EST (link)He may as well just suspend his campaign for good this time… After that circus-sideshow he pulled last week, he has absolutely no credibility left on the issue of postponing debates. And you’re right– the left would be all over him for it, and we’d have good reason. McCain chose his VP nominee, and if she can’t hold her own in a debate– even with a biased moderator– then should she really be playing at this level? And if not, what does that say about your candidate’s judgment?
In spite of the appearance of a conflict, Ifill has way too much on the line to be biased. After what the right wing did to Dan Rather, do you really think that she will risk it? She will be completely fair, and there is no reason beleieve otherwise. Once again, remember how bad Palin in a one-on-one, relatively softball interview with Katie Couric.
Simply put...
Shawn Gillogly (Diary) Thursday, October 2nd at 3:40AM EST (link)Once again,McCain is being too soft. He has not taken advantage of ‘any’ opportunity he’s been given since he surprised Obama with Palin. This was a tailor made opportunity to put on display how far the MSM is in the tank for Obama, and how distorted the information they are receiving from them is.
Instead, he said “No problem” and let it drop. Foolish. Even if he KNOWS Palin will win convincingly tomorrow, he should STILL take advantage of the opening on the off-chance it may change the ground some of the MSM operates on for the rest of the election.

A campaign is a political war. To choose to not use the weapons at hand is seldom wise.
Democrats got away with not even permitting FOX to host debates.
Now Republicans are expected to roll over and take an open Obama booster with financial stakes in the campaign outcome to be moderator.
All Team McCain had to do was do basic research on her name.
But the corruption in this is that the debate sponsors found her acceptable. To not screen a moderator and ask him or her to state what interests they have in a race is just plain lazy.

Either the opposition research by the McCain campaign was asleep at the switch;
or it was firing on all cylinders, and has brought up this objection at the last moment
for the best possible effect of reducing expectations of Sarah Palin’s responses
or to even postpone to debate entirely.
Either way, it’s very well played.
