Looks like we'll have a Republican congress again because no one but Wall Street wants this bailout. There aren't enough voters on Wall Street to get anyone elected. Therefore, any senator or representative who is up for re-election and votes for the bailout will not be re-elected. This is going to work to the Republicans' advantage.
Most people think the market correction will not effect them. It probably will if something isn't done. But to reward these bozos who caused all the problems with a bailout is not the right thing to do. Leaders in Washington need to think this thing through and come up with something better.

Pelosi got ~60% of her party to vote yes.
Boehner got ~30% of his party to vote yes.

Yet RS is flailing away trying to blame the Dems....all for a POS bill that wouldn't have worked anyway.

The GOP should be ecstatic the vote failed. Unless we really have turned our back on free market capitalist principle....which I can't believe to be true.

Let it go. Move on.
Firing Paulson and Bernanke would be an excellent PR move. The public seeks competence and accountability. Here would be a fine place to start.

out of deference to Presiden Bush. After reading up on it, I considered there to be far better superior alternatives, alternatives which were never discussed or apparently entertained by Congress due to the Paulson-Or-Nothing Public Policy Rule.

If the alternatives are flawed, Paulson should explain why and not merely ignore them all.

$700B exceed the size of the Defense budget.

That would be the number of Republican Representatives from PA's ninth congressional district who voted against the "unpopular but necessary" bailout package. He still says that there is a crisis, but he has no reputable counter proposal to offer.

That is because House Republicans have no reputable counter-proposal to offer. Gingrich was on FOX last night musing about all these alternative plans. When asked why Hank Paulson hasn't put forward any of these alternatives if there so good, Gingrich responded that Paulson has been behaving with hubris.

LOL

Gingrich then said that he would have voted for the plan if he was in the House. That after encouraging House Republicans to revolt the day before on the Sean Hannity show.

Well, if it sells books.

Standing there, looking stupid, letting the blame be heaped upon them is not a winning strategy. Today is the day to have a public spectacle, a news conference of 100+ Republicans--enough to present the appearance of a united front--announcing their free-market, money-saving, common-sense approach.

Change the darn narrative! Quit talking about how we might be able to polish their turd and make them explain why we shouldn't be trying to save the taxpayers money--especially if tough times are coming. Every sentence out of their mouths should include at least the phrases "common-sense," "free-market" or "money-saving." That changes the narrative to "we are in this mess because of a failure of various individuals and firms to adhere to those basic principles that every responsible American lives by." That is the gut response of ordinary Americans anyway, that's why there is so much opposition to this.

Who the devil is running this clown show anyway?!

have an alternative plan that didn't get much consideration by our own party, because the focus was on handing over $700 billion to the guys who had a hand in this mess.

I know I bring up Mike Pence alot, but he and other conservatives always stay true to the small gov.,low taxes, and representing the people. They should be heard. The Democrats who voted against it are saying the same thing...almost.

I think these House Republicans are our last hope for sanity. That is why I've been concentrating my donations and support to House Republicans this election year. They stand for what I stand for. Killing this bailout was the best thing since their killing of the immigration bill.

You certainly can't abandon your priniciples on a hunch that the public will diagree with you. People were constantly warning that the country was all for the immigration bill House Republicans killed and it turned out to that the public was actually against the bill once they discovered how absurd it was.

Why not?

How about instead of government purchase, we have some sort of matching funds? Where new companies can obtain some ratio of start-up money. Like small business loans. Let these distressed firms sell off their troubled assets to separate entities. If they are strong otherwise (as if often claimed), they should be able to slough off the deadwood. Some will fail and some will succeed. But, at least we still have capitalism.

The public needs to be informed about this bill just like the immigration bill House Republicans killed. The House Repulbicans are our thin red line from socialism and we have to stand with them. Come on! The public will be clamoring for a good bill not a corporate welfare bill. There is no need to surrender before the fight begins.

The "Pelosi made this fail" is a terrible, stupid, idiotic, dumb as rocks approach.

First, no one with a brain believes it. Pelosi got most of her caucus on board. We didn't. Everyone who has paid attention knows full well that if the Dems had passed this on their own the next step would have been Republicans attacking them for having passed it - including some of the same people attacking them for not having passed it.

Second, it cuts the legs out from under the argument that it was a good thing to not pass this bill as it was. If it should have been passed and those bad Dems let us all down, that implies it was a good bill, and implies that the majority of Republicans let us down even more.

Why not just say it needed killing, and propose something better - even if only a little bit better - when things start up again in a day or two?

The internally inconsistent, reality defying arguments that we should all blame the Democrats who voted for it, just not quite enough, is going to get us nowhere.

Second, it cuts the legs out from under the argument that it was a good thing to not pass this bill as it was. If it should have been passed and those bad Dems let us all down, that implies it was a good bill, and implies that the majority of Republicans let us down even more.

Why not just say it needed killing, and propose something better – even if only a little bit better – when things start up again in a day or two?

The internally inconsistent, reality defying arguments that we should all blame the Democrats who voted for it, just not quite enough, is going to get us nowhere.

What is wrong with standing up for small government and against corporate welfare? I have no idea why people are fleeing from the fact that House Republicans once again did the right thing just like when they killed the immigration bill.

"Bush *made it *difficult"?

Bush made it difficult for republicans to stand up for what is right in public?

Bush was wrong!

... and since when was John McCain more concerned about appearances or what other people think when standing up for what he believes is right? Isn't he sort of running on that very platform... calling people out on corruption... making them "famous"?

Why is standing up and saying to George Bush, "Dude, that plan stinks." a bad thing? McCain didn't seem to have any trouble rocking boats before. Why now?

McCain keeps trying to get the point out that he "isn't George Bush", yet when it comes to proving it... he chickens out?

Is it "Maverick"... or "Gelding"?

The Wall Street Journal has an interesting opinion about Nancy and The New Congress in Town...

"Monday's crash and burn of the Paulson plan on Capitol Hill reveals a Washington elite that has earned every bit of the disdain that Americans have for it. This crowd can't even make sausage."

McCain and the rest of the republicans have to get their courage on and just go out there and tell it like it is...

I am tired of watching republicans cowering, too afraid of what someone might think or whether or not they'll lose their precious seat if they stand up and offend someone by having the cajones to tell the truth.

McCain said he'd rather lose an election than a war... I guess he only meant against terrorists trying to destroy our country from the outside... not democrats who are trying to do it from Capitol Hill.
