This one really came across as crass tonight.
McCain points out the bracelet he has from the parent of a fallen soldier. Obama, naturally, has to point out that he has one too.
Only Obama can’t remember any details. I’m reminded of President George H. W. Bush looking at his watch in the 1992 debate. Obama had to look down at the bracelet to remember the details.
How pathetic and how pitiful a way to remember the fallen.

Hooah_Mac (Diary) Friday, September 26th at 11:32PM EST (link)This man must not become Commander-in-Chief. I just recently completed my reserve unit’s annual training for the year. I am a Sergeant responsible for 6 young soldiers. Five of them have never been overseas. My burden in training is to do whatever I can to ensure that they are capable of completing their mission and coming home alive when they do get deployed.
For their sakes, and that of hundreds of thousands of America’s best and brightest wearing the uniform, we must have a commander-in-chief that sees them for what they are – not political pawns but people who have offered their time, their bodies, their lives, and truly part of their humanity to keep this country safe.
I heard Senator Obama say tonight that this is the greatest country, but it sounded hollow and empty.
This is the greatest country partially because rough men(sometimes in the guise of young men and women) stand ready to do violence on the behalf of the peaceable amongst us. Senator Obama doesn’t get it – Senator McCain does.

Okay
njson Saturday, September 27th at 12:08AM EST (link)I’ll probably get banned for this. But I watched that video expecting Obama to flub something and all I saw was the normal stuttering he does when he starts to say anything.
Call us socialists if you want (since I do, in fact, support socialized medicine). Say that we support bloated government (even though you’re just as guilty as that lately). Say that leaving Iraq will destabilize the region and waste our military’s sacrifice.
But stop attacking our patriotism at every turn. Obama is a patriotic man (like myself) who actually cares about this solder and his mother. To call him crass and pitiful lowers the level of discourse.
Calling someone what they are does not
Hooah_Mac (Diary) Saturday, September 27th at 12:16AM EST (link)lower the level of discourse. What he did was crass, and frankly Senator Obama could care less about America’s men and women in uniform, unless he gets some political mileage out of it.
The DKOS crowd loves him for that, so don’t come over here and pretend it isn’t true.
Bottom line, if this country is nothing more than a meal ticket to you, don’t tell me you are patriotic. Words have meanings, and patriot is one I won’t stand by while people try to change it for their own benefit.
I have lived and fought with true patriots, I have seen their broken hearts and their broken bodies. I know what patriotism is, and Barack Obama is no patriot.

Political mileage?
njson Saturday, September 27th at 12:27AM EST (link)This is a campaign. Both Obama and McCain are trying to get political mileage out of everything.
But I don’t think he’s being disingenuous, whereas you obviously think he is.

I don't want to pick a fight, njson, but...
Laura (Diary) Saturday, September 27th at 12:30AM EST (link)it’s not a great stretch to imply that if Sen. Obama can’t refer to the fallen soldier whose memory he keeps alive by wearing a (newly-acquired?) bracelet without reading his name off of it…that he’s at the very least giving slight respect to the memory of that soldier.
It’s not insulting his patriotism.
It’s taking insult at his callousness.
I respect your right to disagree, but this really rubbed me the wrong way. I mean, he NEEDS TO KNOW THE MAN’S NAME. By flubbing it, instead of accomplishing the “touche”, it came off as little more than a gimmick. I am sad for the mother of that brave soldier.

Hooah_Mac (Diary) Saturday, September 27th at 12:40AM EST (link)It is a conservative blog, but I’m sure most others here wouldn’t say it like I said it. This IS the issue that matters to me.
I suspect that you have never had to tell someone to do something that had a better than even chance of getting them killed. Note I’m not talking about strangers – I’m sure no mother has cared more for or been closer to her children than a Sergeant and his soldiers.
Soldiers get hurt and die, that is a possibility we are well aware of before we raise our right hands. Soldiers suffer invisible wounds that even our spouses never know about or understand. We accept that.
Losing in the political arena what we bleed and die for and win on the battlefield is the only thing most of us truly fear. Senator Obama has been willing to lose.

This has to do
njson Saturday, September 27th at 1:10AM EST (link)with my interpretation of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
Our military is socialized because providing for our safety is part of the core role of the government as embodied in that short phrase.
Similarly, our schools are socialized because an uneducated person cannot participate in democracy, and therefore does not have liberty. This doesn’t mean that everybody needs to be taught by the state — just that the state will provide for an education for those who need it. You might argue that we shouldn’t even have socialized schools, since dirt poor people can pull themselves up by their bootstraps in a library. But even a library is a form of socialism.
And, finally, I believe that the state should offer socialized medicine because of our commitment to protect every citizen’s right to pursue happiness. Allowing markets to regulate health care inevitably results in the poorest receiving poorer care (janitorial outsourcing companies that don’t pay health care, people who need to go to ERs that try their hardest to turn them away, etc.). While America doesn’t guarantee success, it should give everybody a chance at achieving it, and that isn’t possible with poor health care. Just like with schooling, this doesn’t prevent people from opting out and paying for their own health care privately.
I don’t think of myself as a slave because of any of this. I see myself as participating in a government with a core set of principles about what we will provide each other as citizens.
I certainly
njson Saturday, September 27th at 1:18AM EST (link)respect your opinion…this is not a black-and-white issue for me.
Personally, I don’t think that bringing our troops home is admitting defeat. I think our military has accomplished its mission and now it’s up to the Iraqis to do the rest.
This is a political war now. We’ve stabilized things and should keep enough soldiers on the ground to maintain basic stability, but we can’t stay there forever.
I don’t think Obama would ever adhere to a timetable to the point that he would pull out troops just because time was up, even if he knew it would cause instability. But that’s just my opinion.

saluki Saturday, September 27th at 6:26AM EST (link)Actually, the pathetic and pitiful use of the fallen is that exhibited by McCain in nearly every speech he gives. He never misses a chance to appeal to the emotions and continually refers to the bracelet, repeatedly pulling this dead soldier out as a prop. His mistake was doing it yet again.
Senator Obama demonstrated superior principles by pointing to his own bracelet and saying that his priority is to save future soldiers. McCain was crass and only illustrated his stubbornness and inability to change course.
I actually thought this was one of Obama’s stronger responses in the debate. His position is much more realistic, comprehensive, and patriotic than the McCain fallacy of continuing a failed strategy which will somehow respect and honor the fallen. This line of argument from the right is baffling.

However, the bracelet moment was Obama’s low point, and I really think the McCain people need to make something of it, as it could really hurt Obama if it becomes well known.

OK, just to test the bounds of your socialism, njson,
Laura (Diary) Saturday, September 27th at 6:11PM EST (link)What about socialized electricity? Should that be government-provided since in this day and age, all of us need it for even the most basic parts of our life and health and happiness?
I would say “no.” I’d rather that each of us pays the non-governmental provider for exactly what each of us needs. I don’t want rationing by the government. I don’t want to wait in line to hook up electricity in my new home (as is the case in countries where power is socialized). And I wholeheartedly support providing assistance, especially through non-governmental charities and the companies themselves, to help those who cannot afford their electric bills to keep the lights and heat on.
This is directly analagous to how I feel about healthcare. I do not want rationing, tracking, limitations of service, and the “take a number and get in line” mentality that single-payer healthcare systems invariably bring with them. I also do not want the stifling of market-driven research and innovation that comes through the market-based healthcare system we have today.
I do want the costs to be manageable, which will require a whole host of reforms.
Tort law reforms should put reasonable limits on the punitive damages that can be charged to healthcare providers, which will in turn moderate the cost of their malpractice insurance, which is passed along to the payer.
Agencies certifying healthcare providers should be reformed to be far more proactive in helping to avoid the healthcare catastrophes that drive insurance and care costs through the roof.
Pharmacology providers must limit their costs of med R&D to make their pricetag to the payer while under patent much more manageable. They could be encouraged to broaden programs that do provide cost-effective meds to those who cannot afford to pay “full markup.”
We as healthcare recipients also need to take greater responsibility for proactively maintaining our health, through preventative care and basic “healthy living,” believe it or not!
These are but a few of what are surely 100′s of potential reforms of a bloated and, indeed flawed, but world-class healthcare system we have here in the USA.
Providing $5000 per taxpayer, as Sen. McCain recommends, would enable many of those currently uninsured to acquire very good healthcare coverage. Let us not forget that we do also have Medicare, Medicaid, and SCHIP (the State Children’s Health Insurance Program) are already offering considerable support — today!
I’d suggest that you think seriously about whether you want to have an experience akin to renewing your driver’s license at the DMV…or renegotiating your property taxes…before you ask for the federal government to oversee your healthcare.
God bless you both!
Laura (Diary) Saturday, September 27th at 6:20PM EST (link)And I hope he flies that desk safely, all the way up to retirement day!

njson Saturday, September 27th at 7:02PM EST (link)And you don’t give a damn about his service either. And neither do BO or the Democrats who lead your party.
This is simply not true. Of course there are some of the crazier lefties who don’t like the military, but the vast, vast majority of Democrats do. The reason you’re so angry at the left is because you’ve made us into caricatures. It’s childish, disrespectful, and unproductive for you to tell me what I think.
Been on the battlefield lately so you’ve got a basis for that opinion Sparky? General Petraeus has been. And his opinion differs markedly from yours. And Obama’s. I’ll take his word over your your collective ignorance.
Okay so I was being overly simplistic in suggesting that the war is entirely political right now. But the gist is still correct — that our military goals need to start taking a back seat to Iraqi politics.
“President Bush and Iraq’s prime minister have agreed to set a “general time horizon” for bringing more U.S. troops home from the war, a dramatic shift from the administration’s ironclad unwillingness to talk about any kind of deadline or timetable.”
http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/world/iraq/bal-te.usiraq19jul19,0,1199422.story
So yes, Petraeus doesn’t want a hard and fast timeline. But the political reality is that al-Maliki needs something concrete to point to. And Bush acknowledged that political need by agreeing to a time “horizon,” which is a timeline that isn’t hard and fast.
And as I said before, I don’t think Obama would adhere religiously to the 16-month timetable if the people on the ground adamantly resisted.
You can choose to have a different opinion of what Obama will do. But don’t think it’s uniquely based in truth. Your opinion, like mine, is just an opinion.
Let’s see – Bill Ayers, Pastor RacistGodDamnAmerica, Netroots, MoveOn, Soros, etal – while I don’t know exactly what he’d do, I can be pretty well assured it won’t be in the best interest of the United States of America.
Ayers is embedded in Chicago politics, despite his past. Because of that, Ayers and Obama served together on the board of a liberal charity. You can try to paint Obama as a radical because of that, but I don’t think it’s even approaching realistic.
As for his pastor…well, personally I don’t really care about the crazy things he’s said. Obama was very clear in explaining his feelings on it (rejecting the crazier stuff and withdrawing from the church), and I thought he sounded very reasonable.
Overall it just sounds like you have a hateful view of liberals as anti-American terrorist crazies, and this colors your every interpretation of Obama. Maybe if you started to have a little bit more respect for us we could have a more substantive political debate in this country.
Sparky, when you and your America hating compatriots on the Left

Thanks for the lengthy comment. You’ve proved my point beyond any doubt. For starters (and enders because I feel the need to vomit after reading your trash) to say that Bill Ayers is just a fixture in Chicago politics when, in fact, he’s an unrepentant domestic terrorist says all I need to hear about your agenda.
Ditto.
Moe Lane (Diary) Saturday, September 27th at 7:36PM EST (link)Bored now, njson. I hope you enjoyed defending a guy who only avoided murdering soldiers and their dates at a dance because he and his were even worse bombmakers than they were agents for social change.
No, I don’t need to see the evidence, thanks.

Agreed Becker,
Wayne (Diary) Saturday, September 27th at 9:43PM EST (link)can you give the address for that web site? I’ve searched and haven’t been able to get past an official USMC site that says the parent’s site isn’t up and functioning yet. My son served with 3/4 earlier, he’s now with 2/3, and waiting on the E-8 promotion list.
