Important principles may and must be inflexible. ~ Abraham Lincoln
Nope, not my point.
birdmojo (Diary) Wednesday, August 20th at 3:00PM EST (link)My point is that when the Fiscal Conservatives and Libertarians made noise about this, that, or the other thing, we had the importance of the War On Terror thrust in our faces.
Surely you understand that there are people out there who want to kill us? Surely the Constitution is not a suicide pact! And so on and so forth. We need to understand that compromises need to be made. This is why, incidentally, there is a TSA and why TSA workers are part of a Union. Because Fiscal Conservatives had to understand how important the War on Terror is. You don’t have to fall in love, you just have to get in line. Besides, the Democrats would be worse.
And yet, when abortion comes up, it’s no longer a case that the War on Terror is of vital importance. Some things allow for no compromise. Indeed, sometimes you’ve just got to teach the Republicans a lesson!
I’ve already had one person say that Obama being elected is better than McCain-Lieberman being elected.
Are you in agreement with that statement?
Is it true that the War on Terror is no longer the most important thing?
It’s not that I think that people who are pro-life deserve to be poked with pointy sticks… it’s that the pro-life people who argued that Fiscons needed to buck up and compromise a little suddenly find that having one’s own ox being gored is something worth “making a principled stance” about should have this looked at and very, very carefully.
May I suggest that if Lieberman be picked as VP that you buck up and get in line because the Democrats would be far, far worse?
And if you see this statement as vaguely offensive, might you see why it grated so very much against the Fiscons and Libertarian types?
And if that makes you feel like I’m poking you with a pointy stick, might that not indicate something?
Man is free at the moment he wishes to be. –Voltaire
The list offers no clues
SirGladiator (Diary) Wednesday, August 20th at 3:19PM EST (link)All the really major candidates for VP are on the list, so it doesnt really offer any clues, at least as far as I can tell. Granted, some of the minor House guys supposedly under consideration arent on the list, like Cantor and Portman, but all the major choices you hear about on TV all the time, plus Governor Palin, the one you never hear about on TV because the liberal media fears her and dare not speak her name, are all on the list.
Theres no reason not to put them on the list, its easy enough to move their name from whatever spot they’re in right now to the VP spot once they’re chosen. So I’d have to say take the list as its intended, as simply where each of these people ‘would’ be speaking if they arent chosen for VP.

paint_it_red (Diary) Wednesday, August 20th at 5:11PM EST (link)Sarcasm directed against Pro-Lifers for insisting on a Pro-Life veep in the Pro-Life party is beyond the pale. I understand your point, but perhaps that was not the best way to make it.
The war on terror is also a vital issue, one which is non-negotiable. But its not the only non-negotiable issue, which social conservativism, particularly on life ethic issues, is as well. I think it would be fair to say that fiscal conservativism is something we should also expect and consider non-negotiable. That is our coalition. Knock out any one of those legs, and the whole chair falls down.
Problem with Lieberman is he fails on the count of being either a fiscal or social conservative. And Erick is right, nominating him (or any Pro-Choicer) would destroy the convention and the party. He’s basically still a Democrat except for the war issue.
If there are candidates whose fiscal conservative credentials are utterly unacceptable for the veep slot, why not just say who they are without attacking another equally necessary part of our party’s coalition?
As a footnote, TSA is not unionized. Its prohibited by ATSA, which is TSA’s enabling statute. If Obama is elected, that would change, but as it stands now, they cannot collectively bargain.

The reason I think he might do that is it provides a little more misdirection perhaps to Obama and would keep his options open depending on who Obama picks.
Wouldn’t surprise me either if he had it down to two or three people. One if Obama picks one category of veep candidate, one for any other, etc.

But it wasn't sarcastic.
birdmojo (Diary) Wednesday, August 20th at 5:26PM EST (link)I’m not arguing that they SHOULDN’T argue for a pro-life veep.
I’m arguing that I was someone who stood by, somewhat surprised, at the vitriol directed toward Libertarianish and Fiscally Conservative types who complained about Big Government Conservativism… especially when they were told that The War On Terror Is The Only Thing That Matters and, anyway, the Democrats Would Be Worse.
I’m not being sarcastic at all… if giving those arguments back at this point in time to those Social Conservatives who say that if McCain picks a pro-choice Veep, they’re going to pick up their ball and go home feels especially cutting, you should ask yourself why.
To come out and say it: My argument is not that the Social Conservatives should stop being Social Conservatives.
My argument is that they need to realize that 2006 happened, among other reasons, because their arguments for “Shut Up And Don’t Help The Terrorists” were about as effective against those with Fiscal Conservative and Libertarian leanings as I imagine they find the argument now.
If I told you that if McCain picked Lieberman that you should grow up, get in line, and quit giving aid and comfort to the Democrats… would you suddenly be motivated to get out there and help get McCain elected because, after all, the Democrats would be worse?
What I want is not for the Socons to stop being Socons. I want them to help the Republican Party become a party I might want to be a member of.
