JadedByPolitics (Diary) Tuesday, August 19th at 2:17PM EST (link)and I quote Tom Ridge
“On May 20, 1989, Ridge joined with Rep. Charles Bennett (D-Fla.) to co-author an op-ed for the Christian Science Monitor that criticized the Strategic Defense Initiative, and which described President Reagan’s signature defense program as causing more harm than good.
“It’s time to resolve one of our most divisive defense issues, the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI),” wrote Ridge and Bennett. “Sold to the American people as a way to make nuclear weapons ‘obsolete,’ SDI was still portrayed by President Reagan last year as ‘a defensive weapon that would make it virtually impossible for nuclear missiles to get through.’ As former Sen. John Tower acknowledged, that vision is ‘unrealistic.’”
Which goes to show he is not up to being the President because SDI was valuable then and valuable now but we are getting a 20 year late start because of stupidity of those R’s who continuously work with D’s.

I love speculating, too, don’t get me wrong. But since we have good reason to believe that McCain will wait to announce until after the DNC, he can respond to Obama’s pick. And since he can respond, he can still change his selection between now and then, if necessary.
That being said, I would prefer that McCain not “respond” to Obama, and that he instead choose a firm VP with whom he is (and we are) confident, regardless of the opposition.

jarober61 Tuesday, August 19th at 4:40PM EST (link)First, for the swing voters in this election, abortion is not the most important issue
Second, there’s some real value in being able to campaign on a national unity ticket (as Lincoln did in 1864).
For the adamant pro-life crowd, ask yourself this: if Lieberman got the nod, would you seriously sit the election out, figuring that an Obama victory would be better?
The President has a secondary impact on abortion, at best. He nominates judges, who then do whatever they do (see: Kennedy).
This is the only road McCain can take...
Judy T (Diary) Tuesday, August 19th at 4:41PM EST (link)because the infanticidal Obama is a McCain killer (okay winning) issue.
Why? Consider my the 70s year old mother. She is a Republican but qualifies herself that early term abortion is acceptable (“every child should be wanted”). She also thinks gays should marry so they can suffer with the rest of us. Hey — I try to talk sense into mom — but haven’t hit the right combination of guilt manipulation and logic.
All the same — when she heard about Obama’s position on killing the almost born and those that escape/evade abortion — well her comments were “that is evil”, “the most evil think I have ever heard”, “how can anyone withhold medical care from a newborn baby”. She was heart sick that someone could think this was acceptable. (“Why it isn’t any better than smashing their heads against rocks — isn’t that in the Koran?”)
Mother is so scared that Obama’s evil could get into the White House that she would rather have Hillary as President than risk a McCain loss to Obama — and Republican mom would never want a Hillary President. She is still hoping the DNC drop Obama and pick Hillary to keep this from happening.
If McCain picks a pro-choice running mate then Obama slides his infanticide ways off the table. As even those, like the mom, who find early term abortion acceptable even with all the advancement of science regarding what happens in the womb (as if the Bible telling us so wasn’t good enough)are so repulsed by the Obama position that they can’t support him regardless.
Not only does McCain offend the pro-life crowd with a pro-choice candidate. He also would drop those pro-choice persons who are unwilling to accept the Obama position.
Judy T.
Mike -- condoms break -- I have a niece and nephew
Judy T (Diary) Tuesday, August 19th at 4:56PM EST (link)to prove it. Also, quality of life issues — maybe you should sit down with someone who has had an abortion and discuss quality of life issues.
Generally, those who had abortions fall into two categories — those who don’t regret it and those who do. Ask about the quality of life for those who suddenly start to measure years and ages and missed milestones of the children they aborted.
I find that those who don’t regret it are usually shallow, self-absorbed and emotionally immature while those who do have evolved from being shallow, self-absorbed and emotionally immature.
Certainly, it may be a matter of perspective. I come from the generation that came of age during Roe v. Wade. The ultimate violence against the most vulnerable of our society does nothing but create an even more violent society.
There are also more and more men who are experiencing loss and a reduced quality of life as they realize they are missing their aborted children.
Judy T.
We still have a huge problem here
paint_it_red (Diary) Tuesday, August 19th at 5:15PM EST (link)While I’m glad to hear Ridge is out, (presuming the RNC has it right), the larger issue is McCain has still been floating the possibility of a pro-Choice veep with state party leaders.
Its true Ridge had other problems -opposing SDI missile defense, lobbying for Brill’s RT program (Brill has donated the max to Obama’s campaign and not McCain’s), and Rasmussen Reports has polled more people in his own state being less likely to vote for a McCain/Ridge ticket than would those more likely to vote for it, took a condescending sarcastic tone towards the base who were upset by the possibility, etc.
But until McCain or someone who can speak for him indicates we won’t have a Pro-Choice veep, I’m not sleeping easy. Why is it that when someone breaks from the party line we call them a troll, but the pro-choicers get a free pass? I know people talk about us needing to have a “big tent” and bring in different types of people into the fold. There is truth to that. But:
That doesn’t mean key leadership positions are the means to do it when it means compromsing ideology.
Reagan’s “big tent” did not involve compromising our principles.
Most importantly, having a pro-choice veep does not make our tent bigger. It moves the tent to the left. Which means those of us on the right side no longer fit under the tent. And guess what? There are more of us that would get pushed out of the tent on the right than there are who would be persuaded in the middle.
The true “big tent” approach, in the Reagan sense, here is to bring in disaffected women voters into the fold. Palin is the head above shoulders best choice here. She appeals to the base, and she appeals to the middle. We’ve got a huge gender gap in all the swing states, often of 15, 20, sometimes 40 points (NJ), according to Rasmussen. And I’m not saying pick her because she’s a woman either. If I were, I would also promote Fiorina or Whitman or Hutchinson. Palin’s appeal reaches ethics reform, being a maverick, the best governor in the nation on energy issues, an astronomical approval rating, executive experience, low taxes (0% income tax), appeal to youth, an incredible life story, etc.
McCain does not need a veep with established foreign policy credentials, he’s already dominated that debate. A governor is not going to hurt him there. He needs to centerpiece energy, he needs to not piss off the Pro-Life vote (which is one of the few issues on which we still as a party outperforming the Democrats on at the polls, even in 2006), he needs a candidate with a squeaky clean ethics resume, he needs a fiscal conservative, a compassionate social conservative, he needs someone who will jolt energy into his campaign.
Ridge, Lieberman and Giuliani, fine men each of them, each fail miserably on too many of these points as a veep. They would harm the ticket.

Palin is definitely the best choice
SirGladiator (Diary) Tuesday, August 19th at 6:39PM EST (link)Theres no reason to pick a liberal for a running mate when such a highly qualified, and extremely popular, Conservative choice like Governor Palin is available. She brings so much to the ticket that has already been pointed out by others, the energy issue, fighting corruption in Alaska, Executive experience, etc. and of course the historic nature of becoming the first female Vice President will obviously be a huge bonus.
There’s just no reason to pick somebody who supports abortion when the right pick is so obvious. McCain-Palin 08!

Come on guys!
Romney or Pawlenty are the ones who make you competitive in the upper Midwest. Alaska will vote GOP. No gain there.
Bush was not a closet pro-choicer
paint_it_red (Diary) Tuesday, August 19th at 6:52PM EST (link)True, Bush the elder blundered in choosing Souter. But he acknowledged that as one of the greatest mistakes of his Presidency. His Pro-Life record was not bad.
In any event, my point was that the “big tent” theory to Reagan did not involve compromising our principles and moving platforms to the left. It meant outreach to different population segments and identifying issues and means of reaching them that are consistent with our conservativism.
I don’t disagree with your alternative reasons for disqualifying Lieberman and Ridge, but to posit the abortion issue as a non-issue is a non-starter. A lot of people name this as a top issue for them. Of the 9% who vote solely on this issue, its a 7-2 break for the Pro-Life candidate. No POTUS candidate can afford to lose 5%, or the better part thereof, on a veep choice, not to mention a much greater number of voters to whom abortion may not be the sole issue but the tipping factor. The Pro-Choicers are definitely going for Obama, so what’s the point in turning off our base? Can any pro-choice candidate add more than 5%? Shouldn’t any veep choice first do no harm to the ticket?

paint_it_red (Diary) Tuesday, August 19th at 7:10PM EST (link)Have you noticed that the vast majority of women opining on this site seem to be supporting Palin?
Yes, Palin is photogenic, which is a plus, but we’re not pushing Britney Spears, we’re pushing one of the best, if not the best, Governor in the country.
Yes, Alaska will vote GOP. But why would Romney help in the upper Midwest? Because he’s from Massachussetts? Because he has huge Mormon support in the West. Because his father was popular there over 40 years ago? The polls don’t support that theory. Romney is a great candidate but he went a bit too negative on McCain in the primary for them to team up now.
Pawlenty would not carry Minnesota in all likelihood. He barely won reelection there himself. He’s a great candidate, and makes my top 3. But he’s not going to bring a lot of new people to the ticket.
Across the upper Midwest, however, there is huge gender gap in the swing states. According to Rasmussen Reports, perhaps the most reliable pollster:
CO – 22 pt gender gap (6/19) 9 EVs, dead heat
OH – 3 pt gap after Hilary endorsed Obama but 20 point gap before the endorsement; 20 EVs +1.5 for McCain on RCP avg
PA – 3 pt gap after the Hilary endorsement but 17 points before it; 21 EVs, +4 for Obama
MI – 21 pt gender gap, 17 EVs, +3 for Ob
FL – (as of today) 29 point gender gap, 27 EVs, +2 for McCain
VA – no data on gender gap on Rasmussen, but Survey USA reports a 15 point gender gap, (and the Pro-Life issue being a 2:1 winner for McCain); dead heat, 13 EVs
MN – 15 pt gender gap (7/23/08), 19 point deficit among women; 10 EVs, Ob by about 8
WI – 25 pt gender gap (7/10/08)
IO – 18 pt gender gap (7/14/08)
NH – over 20 points gender gap (7/24/08)
NM – 6 pt gender gap, but McCain trails by 11 among women
NV – 22 pt gender gap
NJ – 44 pt gender gap, 3 pt race 7/9/09, 15 EVs
Are all of these states going to be in play? Probably not, but they could be with the right veep – Palin.
