Rick Warren Sells Out to the Pro-Abortion & Anti-Israel Crowd This Weekend

Don't expect serious questions

As John McCain and Barack Obama head out to Saddleback to sit down with Rick Warren and avoid tough questions about Obama’s support for infanticide (yes, yes does support it, but Warren won’t be filled with enough of the Spirit to ask him about it), the Chicago Tribune is breaking news today with an exclusive about John McCain.

Sen. John McCain, who is known for his reticence and even discomfort invoking faith on the campaign trail, was once dubbed a “Hell’s Angel” for rioting against his captors in Vietnam in order to hold Sunday church services.

It’s a fascinating story and contrasts with Obama trying to wear his religion on his sleeve with Rev. Wright until it blew up in his face.

As for this weekend, I suspect McCain is getting set up by Rick Warren for abuse in favor of Obama. Paul Seale sent along this link.

Warren says he is going to get “Faith in Public Life” to help him come up with the questions to ask McCain and Obama. Who is “Faith in Public Life”? From the link:

Jim Wallis is **America’s foremost spokesman for the Religious Left**. Bob Edgar, of course, is the former head of the National Council of Churches. Catherine Pinkerton **sits on the Obama campaign’s Catholic Advisory Council**. Anybody see a pattern here? Just to drive the point home, consider the boards of directors and advisors of the FLP, which include such luminaries as:

*Board of Directors president Meg Rlley, **Director of Advocacy and Witness for the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship**.

*Elizabeth Letzler, member of the PCUSA’s Mission Responsibility Through Investment committee and the Israel-Palestine Network (i.e., **an Israel divestment proponent**). She’s also been “deeply involved” with FaithAmerica.org, an NCC outfit.

*Nazir Khaja, a Muslim leader who also **sits on the board of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Rights.**

*Fred Rotondaro, **a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress**, run by Bill Clinton’s ex-chief of staff John Podesta, which is basically a Democratic Party research organization.

*Susan Thistlethwaite, president of the UCC’s Chicago Seminary, well-known to readers of this blog for her contributions to the Washington Post’s “On Faith” column.

*Jim Winkler, General Secretary of the United Methodist Church’s General Board of Church and Society, **who also sits on the board (with Communist Party USA leader Judith LeBlanc) of the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation**.

So don’t really expect serious questions related to faith and Christianity. These people are more interested in gay rights and abortion rights than evangelism.

Shame on Rick Warren for allowing them to participate and discredit what could have been a noteworthy event about faith in this race.

By the way, real social justice can only happen with the saving grace of Jesus Christ. But I suspect that won’t be the message coming out of this event.

I wish I was a member of Saddleback. I would publicly resign because of this travesty.

The elders should be ashamed that they would allow something like this under the roof of their church.

Rick Warren is way out of line to allow politics into the Church. I seem to recall Jesus running some money changers out of the temple because it wasn’t the proper place for such things to take place. Why in the world would Warren allow them back in?

Warren is not helping the cause of Christ by doing this!

After severely damaging the Evangelical church community with his awful “Purpose Driven” blather, now he’s moving to politics. Beware. In his books, he twists and distorts the Scriptures to meet his needs, picking the translation that says what he wants it to say, much like the Leftists do with the Constitution and the laws of the land.

Anyone who couldn’t see this coming with Warren was not paying attention all along. He’s even more dangerous than Jim Wallis and his ilk…at least they pretty much wear their Leftist allegiances on their sleeves. Warren does not, and he has millions of lemmings Purpose-Driven acolytes followers will be marching right along with him, perhaps not realizing where they’re headed.

On target, as usual, Erik.

I also agree with your comment about the Chicago Tribune’s story in light of the coming event.

I would also wonder aloud if the push to try and sell the story that “Republicans are leaving in droves for Obama” timing may also be tied to this week end’s event.

Sure, I could be wrong and that idea could be full of tin foil.

The caveat would be that we all understand that with marketing campaigns timing is everything.

Look for these events to be channeled into the upcoming DNC convention.

I have been worried about this forum and worried that Warren has gone leftist. This only seems to confirm my fears. The best spin you could put on it is that, in wanting to appear politically neutral, Warren has allowed his agenda to be dictated by the left.

Having said all that, this should be an opportunity for to highlight conservative answers to the usual leftist social policies like education and poverty.

On education, we need to emphasize school choice and what a waste the department of education is. School choice shouldn’t just be about better performance. It should also emphasize freedom of conscious. Government schools don’t just bar religious values, they actively work to undercut morals Christian parents are trying to teach their children.

On poverty, we should point out that the best cure for poverty is employment. You cannot improve employment if you are bashing and taxing the businesses that provide it. We also need to counter with the example of welfare reform and remind people that Democrats fought tooth and nail against it every step of the way.

This all brings me to my final worry. I have seen no sign that McCain can offer this type of defense. If he doesn’t he will either appear hard-hearted or like a me-too spender. I hope I am wrong about McCain. I want to be pleasantly surprised.

UCC’ers, Methodists, and Unitarian Universalists… couldn’t find room on the panel for, say, a Southern Baptist, a Missouri Synod Lutheran, or an Evangelical Covenant clergy member?

This is taking “liberal Christianity” to a whole new level. Hopefully what this does is further make an absurdity of a movement gasping for relevance, but something tells me that, instead, the MSM is going to fawn over this with the usual “You like me! You really like me!” tripe.

Uma Richie (Diary) Friday, August 15th at 10:55AM EST (link)

In Tuesday’s town hall meeting, Sen. McCain emphasized school choice as The way to improve education and cited how it has worked in NYC. He said that it was only fair for other parents to have the same opportunity as he did in selecting a school for his children. His words of support for home schooling drew loud applause from one section of the arena.

I do

Paul Seale (Diary) Friday, August 15th at 10:56AM EST (link)

like I said before. God calls on people to make individual choices of responsibility – he wants their heart to make the right choices in life.

If McCain can hit on that item and quote or paraphrase scripture he should be okay.

my question is this…Why has the McCain let McCain get locked into an obvious ambush?

The only answers we can com up with is that McCain and his campaign either agrees with this group, (which I doubt), or they are ignorant of Christian issues and concerns in politics that they’ve been duped, (which I believe is more likely).

Shame on Warren for his duplicity and dishonesty in setting this up…I don’t know what to say about the McCain Campaign.

Some won’t like what I have to say here, and this is just anecdotal evidence (my experience and observations), so take it for whatever it’s worth.

Saddleback is typical of the mega-churches today, and Rick Warren is typical of their leaders.

They’re big on contemporary, flashy, exciting, different, and new. They emphasize being relevant to today’s society. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, in and of itself.

What they lack is a good understanding of history, a solid foundation (e.g. Christian creeds), and strong accountability. This leads to a liberalization of doctrine and policy.

I for one, am not surprised by this event as are many others here. It’s exactly what I would expect from a church such as Saddleback.

Why the anxiety?

Chief1942 Friday, August 15th at 11:56AM EST (link)

As McCain allows himself to be offered up on the plate of “compromise” as is the foundation of Rick Warren and his “church”, then only good things can come from it, primarily the truth. For once, those who presently have a high esteem of both Mr. McCain and Mr. Warren, will clearly be able to see the “false prophet” in all three. Won’t hurt Obama one bit as his “believers” have already been locked down. I simply await to see how God is going to use this travesty to further His will.

Good point

redsouther (Diary) Friday, August 15th at 12:06PM EST (link)

Good point NightTwister. The mega-church phenomenon has weakened the church substantially over the last few years. I understand that Obama probably demanded that these people be involved as a condition for his participation, but it certainly indicates that we evangelicals won’t be hearing any response from him on the issues we care about most.

I really hope Warren will try to make up for the liberal influence with his own questions, but I’m not optimistic. He’s giving a sermon on Sunday designed to help his audience choose the right candidate in this election. I’ll be very interested to hear what he has to say after the forum.

CSUFBomb (Diary) Friday, August 15th at 12:28PM EST (link)

…While I’m skeptical of Warren’s agenda, I have several reasons to be optimistic about tomorrow’s event:
1. Warren has consistently avoided taking partisan shots against anyone. I think the end result will be a non-event where Warren does nothing to alienate either McCain or Obama.
2. He seems to understand that government solutions are illusory.
3. Even someone who is passively pro-life, as Warren is, surely sees the barbaric travesty of partial birth abortion.

I live within earshot of Saddleback and we’re not looking forward to the freak show of terminally outraged government dependents wearing pink tiaras and Che t-shirts that are sure to descend on our neighborhood. On the other hand, maybe I’ll hoist my “No Surrender. No Socialism. NObama.” sign and enter the fray.

Big Picture, Folks

SomeYahoo Friday, August 15th at 1:19PM EST (link)

Mornin’ all (I’m a west-coaster). I’m sure I’ll be berated for chiming in, given that I’m one of those Christians who happens to be a liberal (go ahead, start thinking of your rebuttals), but I’d like to remind you all that Rick Warren, though he might not be as ideologically pure as you’d prefer, has turned the hearts and minds of millions toward Christ. I’ll say that i’m not a fan of program oriented Christianity, and I’m not a big fan of Purpose-Driven Life, but it’s got it’s purpose and God is using it to draw people to himself, so I’ve got no qualms with it.

Someone said his fruit might be sweet but it’s rotten. That’s quite ignorant of you to say, as if you know Warren’s heart and the spiritual state of all those who’ve come to know the Lord at Saddleback and through his book. I’d say the fruit is quite bountiful and we should praise God that one of his children has been given such influence that he can host an event with both presidential candidates (neither of which hold up under intense fundamentalist scrutiny if you’d be honest with yourselves. I won’t forget the bitter words of Dobson toward McCain) to discuss faith issues (it might not be as caustic a debate as some of you would hope, but it’s pretty public and i doubt that it’ll be as hollow as you assume), an event that will receive national attention.

Warren’s ministry is undeniably fruitful and I’d like to remind you that a believer doesnt have to have the pro-life agenda as the sole framework of his civic efforts (Lord knows we have plenty of those) to be doing God’s work in the world. There are dozens of other biblical issues to tackle, like combating poverty. Jesus kind of made that a huge deal, and Warren’s propping up of the environmental (rising ocean levels will effect the poor more than anyone else) and the poverty reduction movement is admirable. He’s taken a generous percentage of the wealth God has given him through that book and turned it into real life change. You have to admire that.

I don’t expect a single one of you to agree with me, but I hope you’ll at least temper your judgment of someone who has done a lot of good for the kingdom (a fool’s hope, but one can wish)

Tear away at me now, good Christians. It’s your ordained purpose.

Skepticism is one thing. (Lord knows I’m skeptical of everybody in public life. The Word tells us to put no trust in princes.) Questioning the efficacy of someone’s ministry despite all the evidence to the contrary of good is something different. Warren deserves to be defended.

NightTwister (Diary) Friday, August 15th at 2:07PM EST (link)

That’s the worst attempt at self-flagellation I’ve seen in quite a long time.

Warren’s work turning the hearts and minds of millions toward Christ doesn’t get him off the hook here for setting up a debate in which a man, whose policies would kill millions of born and unborn, will likely become more acceptable in the minds of those millions of Christians.

I’ve said this before a few times. I even blogged about it. This election is quite simply about Life. Obama’s policies and decisions will lead to the loss of millions of them. McCain’s will not.

Woa, people. I thought we were a little more thoughtful and fair-minded than this.

How about letting the debate actually take place before we judge and condemn Rick Warren? There’s a whole lot of assuming going on here by people, and imho it’s only making the assumer look foolish and small-minded.

Some of the bashing he’s recieving here is astounding. I know Warren to be a very graceful Christ-follower who does his best to live his faith in authenticity. He’s a genuine man, with no pretention, and is the exact opposite of the kind of tele-evangelist stereotype that too often gets played up in the media as an example of what a Christian pastor is today.

If he blows it on the debate, then it’s fair to look at his performance with a critical eye. But let it actually take place before you cast your stone at the man. Hopefully all of you skeptics will be surprised.

I would also note that the whole poverty issue as framed by Yahoo is nothing more than a set up from the left to justify the government take over of society (see old soviet union).

The Bible never, EVER mentions tackling poverty or the environment through forced government programs. It encourages individual responsibility.

The moment someone changes that, they ardently stray from the Bible and into humanism. You know, the belief we are all good and anything can be accomplished by human means – which is in diameteric opposition to what the Bible teaches. Tower of Babble anyone?

Pastor Rick,

As a long time supporter of Saddleback Ministries, I was more than a little distressed to hear that you will be avoiding “gotcha” questions of the candidates on subjects like abortion.

Given that Senator Obama voted against the “Born Alive Infants Act” when he was a legislator in IL, and has repeatedly lied about that vote you have a responsibility to hold him accountable for his actions. This Democratic candidate and the Democratic Party Platform will represent the most far left position on abortion since the Roe decision. Please do not let the question of abortion fall by the wayside in your forum. Millions of unborn are counting on you.

Paul Seale (Diary) Friday, August 15th at 3:58PM EST (link)

I would only note that it is part of the larger Obama game plan to suck Christians into believing that Jesus was a liberal and they should be too.

Need to help the poor? Why just let the government jack taxes up and take your money so they can “solve” the problems of social injustices.

Want to help the world solve the AIDS crisis? Just give everyone condoms with more government money.

Unborn? Whoops, doesnt fit the party affiliation – next question.

Has Mr. Warren helped out the cause of Christ? To a point. I say that because so many churches have tried to emulate his model and end up collapsing because the model doesnt revolve around Christ (ever hear of the Christ driven church?) – it revolves around people connecting with people and signing documents.

I know because a church I went to a while back tried to follow Rick Warren’s plan and it split the church into younger (its cool, lots of others are doing it) versus older (what does the Bible say).

Sorry for the rant. My point simply was (is) my fear that the discussion will end up being nothing more than an excuse for more government take over of our lives as justified by these left leaning associations.

But that is all any church does to be a Southern baptist Church. All SBC churches have autonomy.

That puts the entire issue in perfect perspective. The pro-murder lefties are arguing some kind of legal nonsense drawing on a non-existent right to privacy under the US Constitution. The pro-life camp is trying to stop the American Holocaust (46 million dead and counting).

Rick Warren, whom I confess I am not really familiar with, seems to be a pro-life guy on the surface. Let’s hope he makes an Obama-pinata over this issue.

This is my biggest quibble with Saddleback...

AceInTX (Diary) Friday, August 15th at 7:12PM EST (link)

their statement of faith says that people are essentially good but have drifted away from God’s will and purpose for their life. The Bible teaches something entirely different. It is man’s utter depravity that lead to a need for a savior to redeem him. To say otherwise is to minimize the sacrifice Jesus made for us. To say that man is basically good is a direct assault on the very foundation of Christianity since it directly contradicts the doctrine of original sin! God sees our works as filthy rags which basically means there is nothing good we can do outside a relationship with him as guided by the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ. Saddleback Church says something directly opposed to this doctrine therefor, it is built on a flawed and crumbling foundation pure and simple!

If man is basically so good…why is it that atheistic regimes like Nazi Germany, Communist China, Soviet Russia, North Korea, etc spend an inordinate amount of time killing and starving it’s own populations by the millions?

The Economist, which is a newsmag that I respect, had an article in which they argued that Warren would probably be the next Billy Graham. If it is true that he has sold out, then he’d probably gain a lot of traction with mainstream Christians, but not with Evangelicals, thus leaving the title of “next Billy Graham” up for grabs.

NightTwister (Diary) Friday, August 15th at 7:35PM EST (link)

It’s not as Ace claims. From their What We Believe web page:

Man is made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. He is the supreme object of God´s creation. Although man has tremendous potential for good, he is marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called “sin”. This attitude separates man from God.
Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1,2

Personally, I have a problem with the potential for good statement, but they do not claim man is basically good. I think it’s very important that people are precise when stating what others believe.

The bottom line is that there’s a ton of pre-judging and bashing going on here of a good Christian pastor. It’s the kind of stuff I’d expect to see at Kos or another far-left blog, not RedState. They hate Rick Warren. Weird to see that kind of rhetoric here too.

I’m the most pro-life person I know, but I’m not going to flame the man just because he potentially got the opinions of men who are not pro-life for the event. He probably consulted a plethora of people. If Warren blows it during the debate, it’s fair to question or criticize him. But let the debate actually happen first, then judge him on the actual merits of the job he did.

According to a CBN News interview with Rick Warren, he will address it all:

“I’m going to ask them about abortion. I am going to ask them about the definition of marriage,” he said. “I intend to ask the tough questions, but I am going to ask them in a civil way.

And he plans to ask both of them about Jesus Christ.

“I’m certainly going to ask a question about Jesus Christ in this forum,” he told CBN News. “No doubt about it.”

Anyway, I agree that one should not jump to conclusions too fast. Warren still does not seem half as bad as mega-church “evangelical” Joel Hunter and his Northland Church in Florida.

Regardless, I think this whole “interview” (or whatever you call it) is totally inappropriate for any pastor, especially with a church the size of Rick Warren’s. If he wants to interview candidates, he should become a talk show host or news reporter.

man has tremendous potential for good,

There is a doctrinal inconsistency with the doctrine of original sin….There is no potential for good in man apart from a relationship with Jesus Christ and an indwelling of the believer by the Holly Spirit! This is the foundational principle of Christianity upon which every other doctrine is built.

Your post is contrary to scripture here GC...

AceInTX (Diary) Saturday, August 16th at 12:40AM EST (link)

The very reason for Christ’s death on the cross is the utter depravity of Man and his inability to atone for his evil nature…this is the bedrock upon which the entire Christian Church is built.

Again, I stand by my assertion…Man has no potential for good aside from a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and the indwelling of believers by the holly spirit. The indwelling comes before the potential for good.

Salvation is impossible without repentance and repentance can not happen until a person acknowledges his sinful nature and utter depravity before a holy and righteous GOD.

Is Saddleback’s wording here an unfortunate accident? Maybe…but I’d like to see an answer as to why it was phrased is it is.

Maybe I’m splitting hairs here…I can see why you would think so…but to me…this is an issue worth splitting hairs over! Rick Warren decided to bring on a core group of far left leaning “church leaders” which on the surface look to rig the event.

The proof will be in what is said and what questions are asked and if they are balanced in any capacity; let alone in relation to God’s word and what it says.

You and I are saying the same thing...Saddleback is not with that phrasing.

AceInTX (Diary) Saturday, August 16th at 10:00AM EST (link)

The way they have it worded it sounds to me as if they are saying Man has an innate potential for Good which he does not outside a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

The relationship comes first…the potential for good comes second…that’s what you and I are saying. Like I said…maybe I’m splitting hairs…but I think it’s a hair worth splitting.

I think I’m so sensitive to this point because of the Battles with Democrats over crime and punishment over the years because Man’s innate good nature was used as justification for liberal incarceration policies which lead to an ever increasing crime rate because Liberals refused to keep the 30% of individuals who were responsible for 70% of all crime locked up!

MikeknaJ Saturday, August 16th at 11:20AM EST (link)

That’s ridiculous. I agree that abortion and life issues are and absolutely should remain a #1 priority for conservatives.

But poverty was talked about by Jesus more than almost anything else he ever addressed. Christians should be concerned with human rights and AIDS because we are to love our neighbors as ourselves, and whatever we do to the least of these, we do unto Him.

There is nothing “liberal” about those issues at all. The methods used to address them? That is where liberal/conservative principles come into play. But actual concern is simply a part of being human and following the example that Jesus left us. To not be concerned and pass these off as “liberal” issues plays exactly into the worst types of conservative stereotypes that those on the other side would like to create.

Ridiculous Judgment

Laer Saturday, August 16th at 1:15PM EST (link)

I am a former member of Saddleback who came to Christ at the church and know Rick Warren pretty well. Erickson and many of these commenters are off the mark. Warren is inclusive and asks a lot of questions of a lot of people, but he teaches straight from the Bible and as such is pro-life, supports Israel, and won’t even let straight couples marry at the church if they’re living together.

For more response to Erickson’s post, see http://www.cheatseekingmissiles.com/2008/08/16/setting-redstate-right/ on my blog, Cheat-Seeking Missiles.

Not sure about that

It could have been phrased vaguely

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Saturday, August 16th at 2:38PM EST (link)

for the purpose you suspect, and suspect that you have good reasons to suspect it and so brought that idea to table when you read their statement, but that statement does not support what you are saying.

But yes, we are on the same page. But any paraphrase of what the whole of scripture teaches will, of necessity not be the whole scripture.

Language is an imperfect tool, but the use of the word potential does not necessarily imply “inate.” In other words, for you to idict Warren, you have to ADD an interpretation. You can’t get where you want to from his words alone.

hence, my point is proved

Again, here we are on semantics.

Warren’s statements go on to say that we need Christ to be saved.

so he is on our page with what he actually says on the website.

I cede the argument where the debate is conmcerned...I actually liked it...

AceInTX (Diary) Sunday, August 17th at 7:59PM EST (link)

I would also cede part of this argument to you in that Saddleback’s statement could simply be an over site and poorly worded…where I do not cede the point is what there current statement says is problematic in that in order for a person to be saved, first and foremost is that they must acknowledge their utter depravity before a righteous and Holy GOD and their need for a savior as a result. the statement as it is, (whether intended or not) leaves open the possibility that a person can be good outside a redeemed relationship with the Lord Jesus and the indwelling of a saved person of the Holy Spirit. Even after being saved…we are still not good in and of ourselves since it is not us living any more but Christ lives through us that brings about our good works.

Again…a small quibble…but I’d like to have it addressed by Warren…I’ll likely contact the church after everything has died down and see if I can talk to him about it. I’ll let you know if I’m able to speak with him directly.
