Ted Stevens (R-AK) has been indicted by a federal grand jury on 7 counts. While people are innocent until proven guilty, we know enough facts to suggest Mr. Stevens is going to be looking for a deal.
And the voters of Alaska, committed to reform, are going to throw him out of office.
This is one seat that should stay in Republican hands. It will not, however, if Ted Stevens decides to hang on.
For the longest time Ted Stevens has done all things for the good of Ted Stevens. Now is the time for him to fall on his sword and take one for the GOP team.
Ted Stevens must resign.

If we toss him under the bus, then we are guarunteed to lose the seat. If we let him spend his money, and somehow eek out a win, then we can appoint a Republican to replace him after he does resign.
Sorry to be harsh, but after Foley in 2006 we should have learned that taking the high road is just a guaruntee of a loss. There are times when we have to decide between principles and victory. We know how the the other side will choose.
I say we affirm the principle of innocent until proven guilty and let him run. All the other options are guarunteed to lose.

Dave_in_Fla (Diary) Tuesday, July 29th at 12:58PM EST (link)Vickers has also raised about $200K. With his $750K ad buy, that is close to $1M. But then, if he has spent that $750K it wasn’t reported to the FEC, so I’m not sure where he stands moneywise.

Now I think you all should get used to Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska). I hope the DNC puts the SAIC in their Hall of Fame; too late to spin up much money or organization on behalf of Dave Cuddy, Stevens’ primary opponent. Cuddy is the scion of a banking family and served in the Leg here but has little name ID. Begich’s dad was a Congressman who was lost on a flight over Prince William Sound, along with Hale Boggs. Begich the younger is a fairly popular mayor of Anchorage and is pretty much a shoo-in now. Cuddy has personal wealth, so money isn’t much of a problem, but name ID and organization are almost impossible at this late date. Get used to the idea of Alaska not being a reliably Red state.

Competency over ideological purity and litmus tests
Oh, Woe Is Me! Let's Just All Give Up and Go Home!
IJB Tuesday, July 29th at 7:33PM EST (link)A couple of points here:
1) Cuddy may not win the primary – Vickers might, esp. if he positions himself as a “reformer” in the race a la Parnell.
2) Whether it’s Cuddy or Vickers, we don’t have to lose this. Your “Oh it’s all over! Woe is me! Let’s just give up” doesn’t help.
With other races (e.g. NH, CO, LA) improving across the country for the GOP, this is the place, with this AK Senate race, that the NRSC should spend the little money they do have.
Now, they need to be careful – they need to help out in consultation with local AK politicos (the NRCC has been particularly bad the last few cycles about running locally politically tone-deaf, unhelpful campaigns for ultimately losing challengers – we have to make sure the NRSC doesn’t make the same mistake).
But in a race like this, the key is simply raising the name I.D. of Cuddy/Vickers/whoever, while showing what Begich is really all about.
The GOP does that, they have a shot.
If they take your particularly unhelpful advice, and we will lose, without firing a shot.
That would be dumb.
Damage Continues
dld1717 (Diary) Tuesday, July 29th at 7:49PM EST (link)Alaska Politics first:
CQ has already changed the rating to lean Democrat for the Senate race. Second, primary voters would have to let Stevens win the primary and then chose a replacement if he choses to stop his re-election process. The problem then becomes who do you select to replace him?
Nationwide Implications:
A huge reason Republicans lost in 06 was the perception of corruption and this is going to impact all Republicans. Already in NH for example Sununu is being hit for having Stevens money.
Nat’l Democrats will use this daily to hit Republicans. Sadly, the public really doesn’t expect much from Dems on the moral compass but Republicans always get hit harder.
Alaska Republicans please give us your take.

Recent Precedent Says He Won't Resign
Roth Tuesday, July 29th at 8:07PM EST (link)Put yourself in Senator Stevens’ shoes. He’s merely been indicted (though it looks fairly bad), and people are asking him to resign?
He need look no further than to his GOP colleague, Senator Craig, who plead guilty to, ahem, shenanigans of the most tawdry variety in the men’s bathroom.
And he merely locked it down and didn’t resign.
If Senator Craig is not going to resign after pleading guilty to what he did, why on earth would Senator Stevens resign after getting indicted for (allegedly) doing what he did?
Stevens should look at Craig still skulking around the Senate cloak room, and tell all the handwringers here: “Thanks guys, I’m all good.”
You Welcome Input in the Form of "It's Over - Let's Give Up!"?!
IJB Tuesday, July 29th at 8:24PM EST (link)That’s odd coming from someone who’s every elections post is virtually the exact opposite of that.
I realize that Achance has a wealth of knowledge about AK politics.
But his “It’s all over!!” post is not particularly helpful.
And in the case of AK, I don’t believe it to be true.
It would be true if we were talking about the electorate of a Blue State that was predisposed to pull the lever for the Dems. If this was CA or IL, I agree that this exact same scenario would make it nearly impossible for the winner of the GOP primary to have a chance.
But this AK, we’re talking about.
So I don’t see how an “It’s all over – don’t even bother” post is particularly helpful.
This site is devoted to electing Republicans. I suggest we work on:
1) Getting Stevens to resign. And,
2) Figuring out how to help whoever wins the GOP Primary win the whole thing in Nov.
Isn’t that why we’re all here?
I'm not sure getting Stevens to resign *immediately* is best for Conservatives and Republicans

I'm Not Sure There's a Parallel
IJB Tuesday, July 29th at 8:32PM EST (link)Stevens is facing far more serious charges than Craig.
Charges that get to the heart of his position as a Senator.
Also, after 2006, I think the GOP is much more cognizant of the dangers here (esp. when you factor in Stevens long-standing reputation as a weak-kneed porker – Craig could at least claim some conservative credentials) – I imagine everyone in the GOP leadership is going to pull out all the stops to get Stevens to resign.
(If they fail to do this, then we have a whole other problem that will involve a much more thorough house cleaning of the congressional and party leadership – after they get slaughtered in the upcoming elections, natch.)
But the next few days are critical – I think The Directors are going to need to get right on an ‘Action Item’ for the membership here:
It’s time for everyone to call every GOP Senate office (including McCain’s) they can get their hands on and make clear that we expect the GOP Senate membership to get on board in forcing Stevens to resign.
We’re facing potential disaster here if we don’t.
Politically It Is
IJB Tuesday, July 29th at 8:37PM EST (link)I don’t see an upside to siting on this thing.
Trying to get Stevens to sit it out long enough to “win” the Primary and then resign, is a dubious proposition at best, and worse it comes off politically as being “too cute by half” (and would be hung all over us by the Dems).
Perception is reality here – Stevens is already perceived as a corrupt porker, exactly the guy we don’t want tied around our necks going into November.
For all I know, Stevens is innocent (in light of what I read, that doesn’t seem very likely to me, but whatever).
But everyone is going to assume that he is guilty.
There’s no use trying to pretend otherwise.
For the good of the party, he needs to go.
Democrats did similar in NJ and won

That's NJ, and The Dems
IJB Tuesday, July 29th at 8:48PM EST (link)Democrats can get away with pretty much murder, esp. in hard Blue States like NJ. (And, of course, the Press will never call them on it.)
That stuff never works for Republicans, and what’s more we’ll be crucified for it if we try.
Yes, it’s a double-standard. Yes, it’s unjust. (And, yes, I’d like to do something about it, but that’s a subject for another time…)
But that’s just the way it is.
I’m not assuming the “worst possible outcome” – I just want to figure out the best possible outcome out of this mess.
And, AFAICT, pretty much the only way out of this is to make Stevens “go away”. Fast. [shrug]
IF you assume the worst of the press,t hat's impossible
Neil Stevens (Diary) Tuesday, July 29th at 8:52PM EST (link)If you’re assuming the worst of the press, Sen. Stevens as a story will not “go away” until after the election. He’ll be written into the storyline whether he stays or goes, just as Foley and Delay were still in the story line after they were gone.
So we need to ignore than and just do what’s tactically best for us, assuming we can get Stevens to resign at all, which again is probably not likely.

ChrstnHsbndFthr Tuesday, July 29th at 8:54PM EST (link)We must force him from office, for the sake of our country, our party, and our own integrity. His behaviour, his ethical stench is unacceptable for a Republican. As a conservative, I was unimpressed with him. As a Republican I am horrified that his man should be associated with us. Frankly one of the major differences between us and the Democrats is that WE HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS for our elected officials. I do not want OUR version of Democrat Representative Jefferson of LA. Throw the bum out and if he refuses to go, then drum on him daily, in the press and in personal mail, that this was unacceptable. He must leave us or WE will leave him. Withdraw ourselves from him in every sense, until that final shred of shame makes him resign. (I just hope it is not too late, and he hasn’t totally become a democrat and is therefore completely shameless!)

let's not give up just yet
dingo (Diary) Tuesday, July 29th at 9:14PM EST (link)While you certainly know more about Alaskan politics than the rest of us, I am not sure why we should give up on this seat just yet. It is a cheap state, and heavily conservative/Republican.
Although it is probably unlikely that Stevens will resign, I don’t think that he will win a primary while under indictment (this isn’t Louisiana, after all). And Cuddy and this Vickers guy both have at least a million to sink into the race. As we all know, if you have money, you can buy organization and publicity (see M. Warner, Lautenberg, Corzine, Gordon Smith, etc.) Things might be compressed, for the primary, but I still find it hard to believe that the GOP regulars would vote for a guy they know is a crook who can’t win the race. (And a three way race didn’t keep Gov. Murkowski in office.)
Assuming either Cuddy or Vickers wins, than the candidate needs to run a conservative/Republican campaign against Begich. Begich will have the edge, but it is by no means guaranteed, as AK is still a Republican state. (Don’t worry, the state won’t vote for Obama once the voters find out who he is.)

useful things to know
dingo (Diary) Tuesday, July 29th at 9:30PM EST (link)The most useful thing we could do at this point is to identify and support the GOP candidate who could best defend this seat – probably either Cuddy or Vickers. Cuddy is a former state Rep., and he ran once before against Stevens. How was he as a candidate? And does anyone know what Vickers is like? How much money do these guys each have? Do these guys look Senatorial or have any charisma? Does either have corruption problems? And are they good b.s.ers?
These are things it would be useful to know.

Of course given that he only moved to the state full time in January that might be an issue. Evidently there isn’t a multi-year residency requirement in Alaska as in some other states for Senators.

Agree, kind of
Roth Wednesday, July 30th at 3:07AM EST (link)Agree with you that the charges Stevens is facing are far more legally serious than those that Craig plead guilty to.
I’m not sure which crime, in the court of public opinion, I’d rather be guilty of, but I guess I’ll leave that to one’s personal compass.
Setting aside any potential comparisons in terms of jail time, etc. (we can’t know until and IF Stevens is found guilty and/or pleads), I think I’d rather be known to be corrupt and giving false statements to the Feds than as someone who was guilty of soliciting gay sex in a public restroom.
Particularly as someone (Craig) who has made a career out of standing for “family values”. But perhaps, that’s just me.
All of that said, I agree with the larger substance of your point.

Achance (Diary) Wednesday, July 30th at 8:00AM EST (link)That fact will drive what Ted Stevens wants and there’s little he can deal with. From what I’ve seen, and we’ve been drowning in VECO news here for almost two years, they probably have Ted dead to rights and could easily have brought the same evidence here with a corruption, maybe even a bribery charge. Of course, they’d have to face an Alaska jury, so they brought it as financial disclosure charges in DC where he can be convicted of being a Republican if nothing else.
So, I suspect the FBI will be seeking Ted Stevens’ cooperation to try to get them to save or go light on Ben Stevens back here.

If Stevens wins the primary then quits,
Achance (Diary) Wednesday, July 30th at 10:42AM EST (link)the Party gets to nominate its candidate and Gov. Palin would get to appoint his sucessor in the Senate, since there is an election within 60 days.
The People gagged on Frank Murkowski’s appointment of Lisa and through a citizen initiative changed the law which formerly had an unlimited appointment authority for the Governor so long as the appointee was of the same party as the officeholder being replaced.
Consequently, it is possible that the Republican nominee could be running as an incumbent senator, with the seniority benefits that would entail should the R nominee prevail in the General. That said, I would be very surprised if Stevens stepped aside either as a candidate or as Senator, especially the latter, unless doing so was a part of the price of saving his son Ben from the tender mercies of the FBI. The FBI pretty obviously ran that play on Bill Allen, the VECO principal named in the Stevens indictment; he pled guilty to bribery and corruption but they let the family off the hook and they largely got to keep the family fortune though not the company itself.
How the politics plays out here though is pretty much a pig in a poke; there’s no love lost between Gov. Palin and the Party leadership – she ran and governs as pretty much the Un-Republican. She’s also been at odds with Stevens, though they’ve been making nice lately, something that has cost her some of her phenomenally good press coverage from a press that is normally thoroughly hostile to anyone with an R behind their name.
In Vino Veritas
Gotcha, thanks (nt)
