Many New SC Polls – Romney well ahead

Monmouth 1/12-1/15

33% Romney    22% Gingrich    14% Santorum   12% Paul    6% Perry   4% Huntsman

We Ask America 1/15

26% Romney   21% Gingrich     13% Santorum     8% Paul    5% Perry   4% Huntsman

Insider Advantage/Newsmax  1/15

32% Romney   21% Gingrich     14% Paul   13% Santorum  6% Huntsman   5% Perry

Ipsos 1/10-1/13

37% Romney   16% Paul    16% Santorum   12% Gingrich   6% Perry   3% Huntsman

Also national polls from Fox News: 40% Romney 15% Santorum 14% Gingrich 13% Paul  6% Perry 5% Huntsman

and CNN: 34% Romney 18% Gingrich 15% Paul 15% Santorum 9% Perry  4% Huntsman

Gallup also shows 37% Romney 14% Gingrich 14% Santorum 12% Paul 5% Perry

The SC numbers show that Gingrich ads slamming Romney have not worked, and are only putting more distance between them. Unless somehow his debate performance helps a bit, Romney will cruise to victory this Saturday. National numbers are showing that Romney is putting major distance between himself and the field.

any candidate but Romney. As a Romney supporter I am satisfied. We have a chance to wrap this nomination up this Saturday and then focus on defeating Obama.

How will you go about defeating obama?

texastaxpayer (Diary) Tuesday, January 17th at 12:33PM EST (link)

What is Romney’s line of attack?

Government over reach in healthcare? Nope… Romneycare is the predecessor to Obamacare and Obama can credibly prove this claim, just look at who the whitehouse used as consultants. The very same team Romney used.

Government over reach in regulations? Nope…. Romney’s own environmental team helped construct Obama’s cap and trade legislation and many of Obama’s environmental regulations are straight out of Massachusetts.

Poor record managing the economy? Nope…. Romney ranked 47th out of 50 for job creation and growth during a growth period for the US.

Out of control entitlements spending? Nope… Romneycare has created budget deficits in the billions and cost 18,000+ jobs.

Ineffective leadership? Nope… Romney left his single term managing a government with a 34% approval rating. A showing so poor he couldn’t launch a credible reelection bid.

Tax and budget policies? Nope…. Romney raised billions in taxes and fees as governor of Massachusetts. Further his 59 point plan is an encyclopedic thesis that should be titled “let’s keep the status quo”. Romney makes no significant changes to the tax code, entitlements or the mammoth federal bureaucracy.

Romney is not credible as a leader. By any measure he is our worst candidate to face Obama. Not only does he allow Obama to make the election about Romney and his many flip flops and documented failures. He is a walking talking caricature of the evil wall street villain feeding of the middle class Obama has been praying for. Romney is the greatest Christmas present Obama have received. It’s to bad your to naive to see it.

texastaxpayer (Diary) Tuesday, January 17th at 12:52PM EST (link)

You know as well as I do Obama isn’t being blamed for the economy. You also know or should that the republican house has blocked his agenda leading to some level of stability and economic growth albeit anemic. So some November it is likely Obama will claim his policies are working. You also know the media is in the tank for Obama and will launch an unrelenting assault on Romney as soon as he is confirmed as our nominee. Romney unlike most the others doesn’t have a record to fall back on to refute the media claims. “He saved the Olympics” doesn’t qualify him to be the leader of the free world. The fact that you have to use that should be an indicator of how pathetic you sound. “He saved the Olympics so let’s make him the commander and chief of the most powerful military in the world.” How can you straight face that statement?

Last night was the first debate she’s listened to. She was sitting there working on her laptop when she heard Romney talk about how he saved the Olympics. Her head perked up and her exact quote was “What does that have to do with being President? Whoop-de-do!”

I just nodded my head lovingly. That’s my girl!

on the Economic front, just hoping that things will work themselves out and throwing money at everything. Romney would be much more fiscally responsible and has the business background to understand economic problems. At the very least Romney understands that government does not create jobs, private enterprise does.

Romney would not apologize for America’s strength to the world and would be infinitely better on Foreign Policy. He will also not cower before Iran and North Korea.

He would keep the Bush Tax Cuts.

the ideology of district and magistrate levels of judges in the most liberal state in the Union with the most liberal legislature doesn’t matter and doesn’t compare whatsoever to what Romney would be able to do on the national level. Maybe you would be able to push through all Alitos in MA, but I am not going to fault Romney for falling short there.

Based on his ideology, I am sure he would be able to do better than Sotomayor and Kagan. I trust that he would govern at the very least as a republican.

Romney is not an ideologue and adapts to the situation. The situation in MA did not permit all ideologically conservative judges, especially at the criminal trial level where it is more important to be a good judge, not your ideological chops. On the national level, where ideology is more important, I trust Romney to deliver at the very least non-leftists.

According to none other than Mitt Romney himself he is an independent. “I was an independent during the Reagan / Bush era.” The question I have posed to you is based on your statement above. “Now we can focus an defeating Obama.” I want to know how you plan on doing that? What issue can Romney use? I know exactly how Obama is going to go about “defeating” Romney. Your his supporter, your “pleased with the polls”. So now that your getting what you want how do you propose “we” win?
I don’t think “we” can, Romney is the least viable candidate to me based on his record. I had hoped a “supporter” would have a little insight but let’s face it you cant even accurately portray his record. Sad…

Texastaxpayer, get off your high horse

The_Rebel (Diary) Tuesday, January 17th at 10:07PM EST (link)

and get your facts straight.

Obama and Romney could not possibly have “nearly identical legislative records”, since Romney served in an executive position as Governor, and Obama served as a Senator. In the Illinois State Senate, Obama voted “present” 129 times because he couldn’t make a decision, because he couldn’t figure out whether to vote yes or no. It doesn’t work that way in an executive position, and certainly not as governor.

As for Romney’s success stories, here are a few items to chew on:

Romney in 2002 proposed cutting the state income tax rate from 5.3% to 5%. The voters by referendum actually approved this in 2000 but the Dem legislature blocked it in 2002. When the legislature refused to consider his proposal, he placed it before them again in 2005 and 2006, to no avail. No one can say he didn’t try.

The legislature imposed a retroactive tax on capital gains earnings, but Romney fought and succeeded in passing a bill preventing this, thus resulting in a rebate of $275 million on capital gains taxes collected in 2002.

Considering the liberal blue state in which he governed, Romney kept spending increases over his four years to an average of 2.2%. Rather than increasing bloated state agencies, he consolidated the social service and public health bureaucracy and restructured the Metropolitan District Commission. He eliminated half of the executive branch’s press positions, saving $1.2 million. In 2006 he used his emergency fiscal powers to cut $425 million, aimed especially at local earmarks. The legislature would have rather dipped into the $1.2 billion rainy day fund.

Federal welfare reform passed in 1995, but Massachusetts bypassed much of the federal requirements. Romney sought to bring the state’s welfare system up to the federal standards by increasing the number of hours each week that welfare recipients must work, and establishing a five-year limit for receiving benefits. He forced Medicaid recipients to make co-payments for certain services. He was also successful in getting legislation approved forcing new state workers to contribute 25% of their health insurance premiums (it was 15%). He also proposed changing the state’s pension system from a defined benefit system to a defined contribution system.

Romney vetoed a “card check” bill that would have allowed unions to organize without a secret ballot election.

Though the very liberal legislature fought Romney in most cases successfully, here are a few of his efforts to ease or eliminate regulations and privatize certain government functions:

Pushed to change a union-backed law which makes it almost impossible to privatize or outsource state services.

Pushed to deregulate the auto insurance industry, with Massachusetts being the only state that mandates maximum insurance rates and requires insurers to accept all applicants.

Called for privatization of the University of Massachusetts medical school.

Proposed measures to eliminate civil service protection for all municipal workers except police and firefighters and exempt low-cost public construction jobs from the state’s wage law.

Proposed easing decades-old state regulations on wetlands.

Signed a bill streamlining the state’s cumbersome permitting processes for new businesses.

The legislature was 80-85% Democrat during Romney’s tenure as Governor, but that didn’t stop him from issuing over 800 vetoes, most of which were overridden. One particularly unpopular one was his veto of an increase in the minimum wage, explaining that excessive raising of the minimum wage causes a loss of jobs.

Did you know that Romney defended traditional marriage and vetoed stem cell funding? Or that he opposed driver’s licenses and in-state college tuition for illegal immigrants. Or that he defended Catholic Charities’ right to restrict adoptions to man-woman couples?

His vetoes were overridden hundreds of times from perhaps the most liberal legislature in the country, yet he kept fighting back.

Those may not seem like success stories to you, but we are talking about Massachusetts here. With a favorable legislative body behind him, which is increasingly likely when he becomes President, he will have little trouble getting a conservative agenda passed.

Far from having “nearly identical legislative records”, most if not all of the above would never have been even entertained by Obama.

Not on a "high horse" just asking for a simple answer which none of you Romney supporters can provide. How does Romney beat Obama?

texastaxpayer (Diary) Wednesday, January 18th at 8:53AM EST (link)

You have quite a list of “proposed”, “tried’ and “supported” there. Not exactly verbs that one associates with success now is it? Further you try and cherry pick what you view as conservative and attribute that to Romney while blaming the liberal legislature for everything else. Hardly seems accurate now does it. Since poor Romney couldn’t get anything done without his liberal allies and ultimately he signed their legislation it would seem they share equally in the success and failures of the period. I know that doesn’t help your position so I eagerly await your justification to dispute this.

Further if you look at the major issues of our day. Tax policy, Governments role in healthcare, Cap and trade, environmental regulations and energy production you will find a nearly identical record.of support from both Romney and Obama. I know this isn’t comfortable but its true.
Cap and trade both supported legislation to implement it.
Government mandates both supported legislation to implement it.
Both have promoted a progressive tax code.
Both support capital gains taxes.
Both support restrictive environmental regulations.
Both support “green energy” subsidy.
Both have supported reduction in fossil fuel (oil, gas and coal) production and utilization.
Both have supported planned parenthood.
Both have increased funding for planned parenthood.
Both have supported gun control laws.
Both have supported bans on so called “assault weapons”
Both have been advocates for “gay rights”
Both have created expensive new entitlement systems.
Romney and Obama are like night and later that night.

I have asked Romney supporters to explain how Romney beats Obama. No one has been able to give a credible answer to that question. Like you they cherry pick something from his past ment to make him look conservative or speak in platitudes regarding economic success and Obama’s failures. Consider the FACT that you can’t provide a winning issue and strategy for a Romney campaign while you consider what the facts say about Romney and his record as governor.

You try and cherry pick what you view as non-conservative and attribute that to Romney while placing no blame on the liberal legislature. Nice try. Remember, it is the legislature that passes bills, not the governor. And I like how much of your googling came from the Boston Globe and the New York Times, great bastions of conservative thought and completely unbiased publications.

I made the case for Mitt Romney. I could add a further list of Romney accomplishments, but I would rather just leave it in simple terms. The way Romney beats Obama is simply because he is not Obama. When he secures the nomination and can concentrate on Obama, you might become a believer.

Hope springs eternal down there in the lone star state.

Nice Try....

The “case” you made for Romney is at best tepid. I have never seen someone use the “good intentions” argument before. Sad isn’t it, you can’t even provide a concrete issue Romney can win on. Your whole campaign strategy is “I am not Obama vote for me.”. You do realise this guy is running for the most powerful office in the world right? The leader of the free world. All you can say is ” he isn’t Obama”? Wow I can see why Romney is your guy. With an argument like that who wouldn’t support him.
You do realise that the Boston Globe is the paper of record in Massachusetts right? Please point out any inaccuracies you find. Provide a credible source that demonstrates anything I have posted is inaccurate and I will be pleased to consider it. Although I noticed you have dropped your claim that Romney and Obama are completely different. Kinda shocking when you see just how much they agree on huh? I find it interesting that so many who claim to hate Obama and his policies support the guy closest to him in the race. Do you see that Romney supports so much of Obama’s platform as an issue?
Mind if I ask why you don’t support Obama? Just curious.

If you want to support Romney in the general that’s what you should do. If its ok with you that you can’t even answer a simple question like “How does he beat Obama?” then frankly you are beyond helping and it is pointless to try. But remember this.
When Obama wins union heavy Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Wisconsin by painting your hero Mitt as a heartless wall street crook. I told you so. When Obama makes Mitt look like a lying fool on stage for challenging his economic record after failing in Massachusetts I told you so. When Romney looks like a hypocrite for attacking obamacare, cap and trade and Obama’s tax policies I told you so. When your watching the returns next November and Obama is winning in North Carolina, Florida and Colorado I told you so. You remember that I actually took the time to point out nearly everything Obama is going to use to beat him. Most importantly you remember you chose this path. You actively worked for this. YOU REAP WHAT YOU SEW… and your seeds are firmly in the soil enjoy the harvest…

The_Rebel (Diary) Wednesday, January 18th at 12:56PM EST (link)

of “How does he beat Obama?”:

He emphasizes the main issues of this election campaign- 1), economic growth and 2), budget restraint. He speaks with authority and conviction on these matters, and with ease and sincerity. The Bain issue has already backfired on the Republican candidates, and it will also fail with Obama. Anything that keeps the conversation on those two issues is a loser for Obama, and a winner for Republicans and Mitt Romney.

That may not be the answer you were looking for, but do you have a better one? See you on November 7.

Then why was Bain made such an issue,

to the detriment of the Republican Party, the bedrock of capitalism?

Not an issue with me.

It’s his track record as Governor.
What one does in the future can be predicted by how one handled the past.
And it doesn’t show to well.

They say Republicans are for the rich, Democrats are for the poor.
If they need more voters,
then they have to make more of who they are for.

:) I like your optimism though

I don’t personally think Romney has any credibility in theses areas.

I'm just happy to see that Perry has moved on and gotten a job with the IRS

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Wednesday, January 18th at 10:05AM EST (link)

Glad he realized that he won’t be the next president of the US, and given that he has worked for the government for more than 2 (or 3?) decades, I don’t hold it against him that his next job will be as a government tax collector…smile.

Now if only Perry’s supporters would that face reality and support Santorum or Newt and see if they can make the consistent conservative argument for them.

I’ve tried to teach some of them the 270 electoral vote rule, but had to give some a “F” and they will have to repeat the course next term.

and given Santorum's class envy-based attack on Mitt today, Perry moves up a spot in my preferences to #2

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Wednesday, January 18th at 7:52PM EST (link)

As you should see, I HATE class-based political attacks. The vulture comments by Perry and Newt were the last straws for me and today, Santorum joins them with the gratuitous “connection with the American people comment on Mitt’s comment about income from speaking fees and since his slur was more recent and since Perry is the best resume among the candidates and given his, now, effective debate skills, if SC were to decide to coalesce around a tea partier and/or conservative more reliable and equal in electability, I would hope that it would be Perry.

more later

I hope my friends here see how much issues and esp the issue of class warfare means to my conservatism. Most know what a rabid self-identified social-conservative I am and that I am a war hawk that likes to bomb people

But, look here, I left the Dem party after 20 years of disgust with the class-based hate and even a HINT OF IT repels me. I don’t apologize for it.

Just so we're clear, GC, I would vote for Romney or Santorum, but the only support they'd get ...

I tried to recommend but no luck.

Nice to see the numbers from so many sources. Cheers

The debate should help Newt's numbers

I could be wrong but I think the debate was a game changer for Newt.
He will stay in much longer at the very least.

Perry's Record/Personal Attributes Are Not The Issue

carolynr Wednesday, January 18th at 1:44PM EST (link)

Yes…I will support Governor Perry. I even wrote a piece in the Perry Report…I know that he has the answers to the problems.

The problem with this election is this: A good majority of our society has become shallow. They would prefer a knock down drag out fight…but….only…only with the people the MSM says that they are allowed to back.

People in this country want to get rid of Obama. However…they want the GD razzle dazzle with it. What do you think that gingrich and santorum are doing? Perry gets up and states factual information…nobody pays attention to him. When he tried to show some bravado…who put him down…the MSM and called it a gaffe.

Romney is a flip flopper and…I will say outright…A liar.

I hope someone gets my point. They criticized Perry for saying SS was a Ponzi Scheme..which, in the current form…it is. They criticized Perry for calling Obama a Socialist…and that was mild compared to what I would call him…he a Marxist/Communist. They criticized Perry for stating that Bain was a vulture capitalist…and then went on to say that Perry was anti-capitalist. Some people bought that…and the man is responsible for 63% of Obama’s job creation. Doesn’t sound anti-capitalist to me…but the sheeples just listened to the first sound bite. Don’t think…just follow.

But…let Newt say it…and the game is on. STUPID PRESS…I wonder who pays them or threatens them to back a candidate. Meanwhile…the sheeples just keep following along without THINKING.

Rasmussen Poll: Romney 30%...Gingrich 27%

marktx Wednesday, January 18th at 8:01PM EST (link)

In the latest polls taken AFTER Monday’s debate, Newt Gingrich is surging – within the margin of error.

The race is up for grabs…and I wouldn’t be surprised if Newt Gingrich wins South Carolina.
