And troubled you the most?” Maybe “Tenacious Jeff” can just reprise his hard-hitting question at the next press conference, as I’m sure all Americans are just dying to know the new answers rather than anything about North Korea’s nuclear weapon deliver systems, or Iran’s nuclear weapons manufacturing, or whether CBO numbers were withheld from the Congress, or why it’s a felony to be within 65 feet of the Gulf oil cleanup operations, etc..

AP’d been working on a sit-down w/ the Coast Guard since July 1 — and these sort of restrictions had been occuring since May, beginning with flyover restrictions.

Okay, wait a minute. This isn’t a ban on reporting, this is a ban on doing stupid.

Getting charged with a Class D felony within 65 feet of essential recovery efforts is excessive, but getting that close to a vessel involved in the cleanup is really frickin’ stupid. More often than not, 65′ is within one hull length for a seagoing vessel. No one in their right mind goes messing around like that on the open seas.

If I were Master of a seagoing vessel and someone brought their vessel that close to mine on open water, you can bet I would become very distracted from my primary job focus. Vessel and crew safety are paramount on the open seas, and there often isn’t a second chance to make it right.

There isn’t any reason why the Master of a sail or motor yacht can’t keep their distance from recovery vessels, and still accomplish the goal of reporting the recovery effort. 100′ is not too far away to get the job done.

Again, in my opinion, classifying this as a Class D felony is excessive. However, I’ll give DOJ a pass on this one. Violating precepts of maritime safety can be deadly, and no one needs to be put in that position.
