in Stevens' race. I think the most important ingredient is one that is very hard to quantify, when was the vote cast? Stevens' only presence in the state up until the end of the trial a couple of weeks before the election was an endless stream of very negative coverage from the trial; this while Begich pretty much had the airwaves to himself. At that time Begich looked like the overwhelming winner. When Stevens returned to the state and ramped up a campaign, the numbers moved dramatically. I believe late votes will somewhat favor Stevens, but I don't think there'll be enough. All the purists here can be happy that the Ds picked up a seat that has been R for forty years.

that the fly in the ointment is how many who voted McCain/Young dropped Stevens. Having said that, a large chunk of the votes counted were from the Anchorage area where Begich should be strongest.

The point (hope?) is that at least the majority of the ballots remaining to be counted are from areas which are more Republican than Dem. Gives me more hope than having him trailing Young and having the remaining ballots be from Dem strongholds.

Just lookin' (hopin') for a fighting chance.

Problem is when they started counting Young went down only 1,000 votes from his lead while Stevens dropped his 3,000 vote plus lead and went down to deficit of 844.

so I'll defer to your statistical skills. I don't have a good feel for it really.
