I contacted my congressman Sarbanes and said that he should vote NO, but he voted yes. I got a generic response that did not deal with any of the issues that I had–costs being passed off onto the masses. Why are our natural resources being locked up without alternatives to replace them, ect.. I posted it on my diary, and my email in response back to him.

If I were Ahnold, I’d be pushing for a massive income tax rate cut in California, perhaps phasing it in over a few years. Same for New York and New Jersey. It wouldn’t be good for Arizona, but California would prosper.

But there is a very positive side to this. These clowns have been used to operating with no limits whatsoever, for many eayrs. May 19 the voters told them to stick it, they weren’t going to raise taxes or raid certain funds.

As one might expect, in this session they are going to try to steal and bottom-deal every way possible, and will, as you pointed out, to avoid cutting down to zero all their union and greenie sops. But next year even THOSE things they raided will be unavailable. Those are one-timers. They’ll be used up and not replenished. And so they will be forced perhaps at last to write a budget that lives somewhat within their means.

Alternatively, if they continue to be stupid and dishonest, I think it is an awesome chance, given the parallels going on at the national level, for Republicans to make huge strides in CA. Perhaps even the unthinkable.

First the state government plans to “borrow” a huge amount of money from already struggling local and counties who largely have their budgets under control.
The County of Ventura Transportation Div budgeted for a rainy day enough to sustain itself for a year barring any disaster-related expenses. The state will confiscate all the gas tax money, property taxes, sales taxes, and I don’t know what else. It’s apparent state government is just pulling more rabbits out of its hat with this deal, evidenced in another way by them deciding to pay state workers on August 1 rather than July 31 just to push that debt to next year’s budget paper and keep it off this year’s. Smoke and mirrors, and I’m sure there’s tons more.
Another place I’m skeptical is the Dems allowing off-shore drilling all of a sudden. I’m sure even as I peck away on this tiny phone keyboard that an injunction is being prepared to halt any drilling offshore, and they’ll tie it up in the courts until, as agreed, (in 2020 I believe) the oil companies will be forced to dismantle the rigs forever. THAT part of the agreement the libs will abide by, I’m sure.
Nothing in California is ever as good as it seems when it comes to the lib state government, and often it’s worse.

Cuts that would be politically unthinkable in ordinary times are possible in times of distress/upheaval.

Let ordinary temporary govt funding expire as the house majority in a healthy 1995 ==> some folks lose their houses ==> sob stories hurt republicans

Cut the budget as employment reaches/surpasses 10% in 2009==> some govt employees lose their jobs like the rest of us ==> cry me a river

I don’t agree much with Arnold on anything. But he deserves our praise for negotiating this “compromise”. If he was in my state (Washington) and did the same thing, I would’ve been proud to have voted for him, because reducing the size of government is priority #1 to ensuring freedom.
