How many of you guys know some *other* guy who is henpecked to death by his backbiting shrew wife, who sucks the joy out of his life, won’t let him sit down for one minute to enjoy sports on TV, and gets insanely jealous any time he happens to cross within 20 feet of the path of a woman who looks better than she does – and God forbid he should accidentally *look* in her general direction. Hug her? Yeah, not without paying……and paying…….and paying for months, maybe years.
Yeah, me too. I know several of them. I know the look. In fact, here’s the look:
This is last Friday, April 3, 2009, when the Obamas, on their Apology Tour™, Europe Edition, descended on Paris and were met by President Nicolas Sarkozy and his supermodel wife, Carla Bruni. You see what happened. Hugs and kisses abound, but when Bambi circles to meet the French First Lady, he leads with his hand and does not reciprocate her forward lean [those of you who saw While You Were Sleeping will recognize "the lean"]. Notice that at 30 seconds, Barack stiffs Carla – check the look in his eyes. Yes, that look. Sure enough, at second 33, Michelle is checking the scene to make sure he’s still on his leash. Three seconds — 3 whole frakking seconds– that’s how much leeway the poor guy had.
The world press widely circulated the notion that somehow Carla Bruni stiffed *him*. You know why? Because every man in the world knows the look in his eyes. Every man feels sympathy, and leftist media being leftist, they want to cover for the poor man who is supposed to be the most powerful man in the world, The One™ who is supposed to save the world from free markets and American Exceptionalism. We can’t have him looking weak now, can we?
Of all the press, I can find only the UK Sun that got it right in their story Bruni backs off from Obama kiss. They got the headline wrong, but got the story right:
Former model Carla lent in to give the world’s most powerful man a traditional kiss on the cheek. But he appeared to flinch away, leaving her flustered — and they ended up settling on a stiff shake.
You know that look in his eyes. I know that look. That’s the look of every guy we would not want to be.

Here’s what it reminded me of:
When I was a younger version of my nerdy self, studying in Paris, I would meet other students, and sometimes the guys/girls would do the “salut” and air-cheek-kiss thing. I never got used to it. I remember meeting this one particularly attractive girl and was obviously VERY awkward in reacting to her approach. A French buddy of mine later mocked my reaction.
Obama is a nerd too. He did pretty well for a nerd, and constrained his awkwardness pretty well for us nerds.
I didn’t see the look in Michelle’s eye either.
AND it gives me the reassurance that with President Obama, we will at least be saved from the White House becoming a Clintonesque brothel once again.

My (combined) wish list.
Certainly.
McKinley (Diary) Tuesday, April 7th at 3:47AM EST (link)I will post my response here as I feel the topic is pertinent to the discussion on media bias.
A summary from wikipedia, and a quick browse of “Vitter scandal” on google:
Following Bob Livingstone’s resignation over an adultery scandal in 1999, Vitter told the Atlanta Journal Constitution he believed Clinton should follow the Republican speaker’s example, claiming it would be best for the country to move past the distractions caused by these infedelities. According to court records, this was a few month before he began patronizing the brothel run by the infamous D.C. madam. If we want to nitpick, we could say that Vitter’s repeated, and presumably past, infedilities were not inhibiting his capacity to represent the state of Louisiana. That being said, his brief bout with infamy on the national stage invited a media predisposed to cover the sexual misadventures of prominent people to unfavorably compare his position on the Federal Defense of Marriage Act with his practices, ostensibly undermining the party’s credibility on the issue. This, coupled with the novelty of the exposure of a high class prostitution ring in D.C. coupled with his wife’s decision to stand with her husband following a quite inflammatory statement that she would leave her Vitter if he behaved in a Clintonian manner probably helps explain why the media covered the event the way it did than the party label.
My goal is not to slime an otherwise accomplished and competant legislator, but to suggest that explaining any negative story about the personal life of a conservative as the product of liberal media bias is a reductionist explanation of how and why media covers what it covers. For example, scholars studying what jounralists report on foreign policy decisions have noted the great amount of attention congressional critics from the press within a president’s party recieve during troop deployments abroad – think Chuck Hegel, or, from the left, the attention given to Joe Lieberman. (See Baum and Groeling, 2005). It is less a function of what the Senator’s position than the fact that dissent within the ranks is newsworthy for its novelty. The media is also drawn to conflict, whether within parties or interpersonal feuds between individual politicians, or between families – think of the attention Ron Reagan Jr./Eisenhower’s granddaughter, Jenna Bush maybe not voting for McCain recieved. Is it because the media is out to make the Republicans look bad or are they drawn to the novelty of such an action? It is impossible to prove anywhere outside the realm of anecdote as we will never have access to the notes of the editorial board of any similair stories the media quashes on Democratic side, or on Republicans, for that matter. I am positing that the media is more of an equal opportunity offender with regards to these kinds of scandals than many commentators on this website seem willing to accept. It is plausible to accept that reporters with left-leaning sympathies might be more vigilant in pursuing such stories which could help explain the greater frequency of reported conservative indiscretions. That would represent a systematic media bias, though perhaps not the kind envisioned by many on this site.
With regards to Joe Biden’s daughter, if you read summaries of the story, the Vice President’s position as a “Drug Czar” is almost always cited near the front of the text. Indeed, this website makes hay out of the hypocrisy of her profession. If I recall the original essay correctly, the commentator seemed upset that Ashley Biden’s indiscretions invited further Palin/Bush bashing. Well, it is well within the purview of journalistic writing to contextualize a story within a large narrative to convey why it is newsworthy. As many children of presidents and major figures are often caught doing actions that would embarrass their parents, Ashley Biden’s drug issues are a comparable to Jenna/Barbara Bush/Bristol Palin etc, though, as one commentator noted, Biden’s offense is certainly more egregious.’ That said, Bush’s youthful drinking problems were well known, and the Bush twin story fit into that narrative during a releatively slow news cycle. I recall the biggest story surrounding the Palin pregnancy extra was how this just further revealed the disorganization of the McCain campaign and its vetting process.
Oh well ... I can see we're talking past each other.
Martin Knight (Diary) Tuesday, April 7th at 6:46AM EST (link)My question was about your belief that Vitter is a hypocrite – not media bias.
The talking point on the Left – which you just repeated – when the scandal blew up was that Vitter’s opposition to gay marriage was “hypocritical” because he had once committed adultery. Completely downplayed in the entire story was that Vitter, unlike Clinton, confessed to his wife, confessed to his priest, and freely underwent counseling long before the DC Madam and her clientele list was exposed.
That makes Vitter *not* a hypocrite – by comparison, Clinton needed to get caught first. This idea that once one has never committed X, one cannot be opposed to X because that would be “hypocritical”, is one of the Left’s most cherished beliefs.
Apart from the happy “coincidence” that it provides a handy club for silencing opponents with an ad hominem argument, it validates the Lefty inclination toward validating/celebrating inequity i.e. “… if it feels good, do it.”
Oh please ... You have got to kidding me(!) ...
Martin Knight (Diary) Tuesday, April 7th at 7:33AM EST (link)To be honest, the argument you use to support the notion that the media is an “equal-opportunity offender” when it comes to scandals was tired ten years ago … and it’s still tired now.
Basically, you’re saying that the media only appears to be biased because of such and such extenuating circumstances (in which you hilariously include a “slow news cycle”) which makes it (to you) understandable that they would loudly trumpet this particular scandal involving a Republican doing X – while downplaying that scandal involving a Democrat also doing X, loudly trumpeting the partisan affiliation of Republican caught doing Y – while not mentioning at all the partisan affiliation of Democrat caught doing the exact same Y.
That’s some major league BS.
Your “context” argument is just as suspect – if one of (for example) John Boehner’s children are photographed smoking a joint, I would bet you anything that the number of stories making it to print on the “scoop” that would shoehorn Ashley Biden’s coke snorting you would be able to count on one hand, with fingers left over. The way the Press went after Bristol Palin (and the Bush twins before her) made a complete mockery of their promise to keep the candidates’ families out of political coverage.
So, predictably, they couched the fact that photographers were sent to waylay a sixteen year old girl, already in a difficult situation, at her school, as a story about the McCain campaign’s “vetting process” – one of the more lame ass fig-leafs I’ve ever heard.
But you gullibly swallow it hook, line and sinker – and expect us to follow you in doing so. That’s not gonna happen. There’s always some fig-leaf “extenuating circumstance” – some caveat, some exception, some “narrative context” to explain it all away, why this Republican’s family or associations are fair game, while a Democrat gets actively protected from similar treatment.
Ace memorably wrote about this a long while back (in the middle of the Bush-Kerry race), and it applies now just as much as it ever did;
Excellent piece Martin
McKinley (Diary) Tuesday, April 7th at 10:07AM EST (link)by you and Ace. I’m happy redstate still takes the arguments of quasi-dissenters seriously.
We are both interested in trying to understand why the media behaves as it does with regard to conservative scandals.
I’m not convinced its as easy as “that they’re liberal, and slant their coverage to favor liberal candidates and causes,” for reasons I have explained. I’ll concede my method is as imprecise and sloppy as pre-Coperinican astronomy and I could probably explain away every scandal as functioning from something outside partisanship which entails misseing the larger pattern of heavy coverage of Republican scandals. This is why I hope someone at a conservative think tank will do a quantitative study of news reporting that should control for every caveat I raise.
"By their fruits, ye shall know them" is my philosophical outlook on this topic.
Martin Knight (Diary) Tuesday, April 7th at 10:19AM EST (link)Yours may be different … but I suspect it would be next to impossible to satisfy all your caveats.
:ka-click: Try again, McKinley.
