Elizabeth (Diary) Friday, February 13th at 6:27PM EST (link)I’ve found all six books on Amazon. Furthermore, I can make out faint reflections of the leftmost two books in the wall on the side of the section.
As to the sign, I could attribute the brightness to the proximity of a flash and the font seems no different to me to the sign to the left of it. Neither of those prove anything one way or another.
Seriously, is this a joke?

I don't know about this ...
zauriel Friday, February 13th at 7:13PM EST (link)In order to believe that this isn’t some kind of shopped photo, I’d like to see someone go in and capture this on video. Seriously. If this is an actual store in Dallas there should be no problem with someone in this readership taking a trek down to it with a video camera or even the movie capture feature on their digital camera and make it 100% hoax-proof.
If it’s true, it’s seriously disturbing. It’s even more disturbing that the featured display of that section contains no other books actually pertaining to religion. What would make it less disturbing and actually funny is if the owner of the store is a conservative and set that up to make a statement.
The Borders website
zauriel Friday, February 13th at 7:42PM EST (link)So I just took a trip over to Borders.com to see where they list these books. The official category for all of these books is indeed the Kids section, but not under Religion. They’re under American History/Politics.
That means the picture is either shopped (the sign, not the books), or someone replaced the religion books on display with these. I happen to believe it’s the latter. Whether it was done by an employee of the store or a casual shopper, who knows. Though there are some pretty fanatical Obama worshipers out there, I find it hard to believe that one of them actually did this with the intent to promote Obama as a religion. I find it much easier to believe that a fed-up conservative did it as a lark to make a point. Someone came along later and snapped the pic, probably before someone at the store caught the switch and put it back the way it was. It was likely easier to get away with doing this in the children’s section where there was less traffic and less chance of getting caught in the act.
Thanks Zauriel

“or someone replaced the religion books on display with these” — probably what happened, and it didn’t even occur to me until I read your comment. Couldn’t see the forest beyond the trees.
The photographer could have done it, or some pranksters before the photographer got there….
I reviewed the image for signs of tampering and found none. Yet, I found it doubtful that something like this was “in the wild”. I check the demosaicing at length, did color sampling, edge detection, all checked out normal for the Canon PowerShot the photo was taken on.

Demosaicing
MetaCosm (Diary) Friday, February 13th at 11:51PM EST (link)Since I dropped some technical jargon into a post. I will explain for the benefit of people who might care, like Speciallist.
Demosaicing is the process by which digital cameras complete images. Basically, cameras have to guess about data between the data it has, you can get more information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demosaicing
So, you can check adjacent pixel values to make sure they are “sane” for that camera, this technique was invented by “Hany Farid” — if you Google for his name you will find more info, and even some demo implementations.
Using edge detection, you will quickly get down to the areas that most likely have been cut and pasted / modified because they will have harder edges than the naturally “soft” edges from the camera. You can then inspect these parts.
As for why color sampling is useful, it is along the same lines, you should see colors changes throughout any solid color section, they will be too subtle for the human eye, but your photo tool of choice will be able to tell the difference. Have big single color (no change sections) is a fairly solid hint that someone has tampered with the photo.
A lot of these very basic techniques can be done by someone with a little time on their hands, and an open source program like “The Gimp”.
There are tons of other (obvious) ways to catch a fake. Incorrectly shaped body parts (eyes), impossible lighting situations, etc. A little common sense goes a long way.
The digital camera used to take this photo was a Canon PowerShot SD400 (EXIF DATA: F-stop: f/2.8; Exposure time: 1/60 sec; Focal Length: 6mm, Max aperture: 2.96875).

papalee Saturday, February 14th at 10:52AM EST (link)constantly and Obama worship is evident from the moment that you walk into the store. There has been a huge central display of books with his face on the cover so that you would have thought that it was a religious shrine. I have just been waiting for them to put out candles.
Look, this is the level of intelligence and understanding of the folks who voted for him. They may read books, even buy books but they don’t really critiically analyze what they read. That is why they are so afraid of talk radio and sites like Redstate.
Let me add this
Jack_Savage (Diary) Friday, February 13th at 8:28PM EST (link)I got a giddy e-mail from Barnes and Noble hawking all the Obama books they had available. I wrote them back, cancelled my account and told them they could stick “all that crap up their remainder bin”.
Having said that, I believe that this was done by a conservative, and I applaud them for it!
I'll bet it was a mistake by the merchandiser in the store.
Brian Simpson (Diary) Friday, February 13th at 9:19PM EST (link)The signs appear to be changeable. It’s an easy enough detail to forget to change when you change out a display. See the following as a perfect example:

Are you guys as contemptuous as us? Or maybe not that bad, but getting pretty jaded? Or do you think that it’s pretty cool that he’s been able to sign some pretty radical stuff so quickly and still keep his approval ratings in the positive?
In short, were you hoping for a moderate lefty or are you pleased to have a waaaaay lefty? Or do you even think the things he is doing is waaaay left?

I'm an employee of Borders Books
MikeG (Diary) Saturday, February 14th at 8:38AM EST (link)I work as an Inventory Process Specialist at a Borders Books, so I have some personal insight into these kind of things:
1) The signs are fixed, not interchangable, and no one at the store level has the authority to attempt to such a change.
2) The location of such signs vary from store to store and are related to where sections were located when the store first opened. However, over time, sections have to be expanded, condensed, or shifted in response to demand and changing quantities of titles.
3) Display formats like this are made at the corporate level and sent to the Merchandise Manager, who is responsible for then setting it up. However, because sign locations are not standard, corporate had no way of knowing that the Obama display would go under the religion sign, and the Merch team has little flexibility. They could shift the display bays slightly, but not much, and as I noted above, the overhead signs cannot be taken down. To move the Obama display from out under the Religion sign would necessitate the moving something else into that space, and risk a reprimand from higer ups. In this economy, why take a chance of getting fired over a display that will come down in a few weeks?
I would chalk this one up to an unfortunate circumstance, and not corporate malfeasance.
You're close.

So, what you're saying is...
NightTwister (Diary) Saturday, February 14th at 5:31PM EST (link)that it’s really incompetence, rather than malfeasance?
I working in architecture before I became a computer geek. I designed interiors for Carlton Cards, Warehouse Records & Tapes, etc. Back then, everything was very carefully laid out and consistent from store to store. I find it very surprising that this sort of thing isn’t very carefully coordinated at the corporate level. Some upper manager is completely incompetent for not making sure these different department are carefully coordinating their work.
