Sad, sad news at RedState – EPU fired as the new guy — Mourning Open Thread

Well, THAT did not last long, did it?
.
.
.
.
Waiting for the punchline, I suppose. Well, here it is. I am no longer the new guy. Let me be the first to introduce our newest front-page contributor at RedState:

Warner Todd Huston!!!

.
He almost needs no introduction, since he has been offering outstanding work, and lots of it, for some time now here in our fair land. We’re very proud and honored to welcome Warner aboard.

Follow me for important further information…..

There are some things you need to know, additional details, about WTH:

  • First, don’t call him WTH. Call him nWTH if you must acronym him, since WTH is already used as an acronym. The ‘n’ stands for ‘not’. Google WTH if you really need further clarification.
  • Huston, not Houston.
  • He thinks the *new* BSG is all that, so please use the phrase ‘Lorne Greene’ as often as possible. Also, insist that Starbuck is a guy.
  • He is not from the South. That’s all I’ll say about that.
  • You may or may not have already noticed, but he’s more of a late-shift guy than not. In fact, I am fairly certain that he has gone to bed at this time.
  • .

That is all. Oh, and OPEN THREAD #2 for the day. In honor of nWTH’s promotion, I offer you this:

No. I think I like WTH.

That will be his new name to me. And when I use his name in vain, it will be thus: WTH?!?!?!?!?!?

If he has a problem with it, he can commiserate with bs.

Oh, Jeez...like we didn't see THAT coming ;)

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, January 6th at 12:33PM EST (link)

For Pete’s sake, EPU, when you got the nod, three quarters of us were sitting here scratching our heads thinking: “What about nWTH? Surely he’s a more deserving and popular writer than EPU. That EPU guy, he’s just something that the government mints onto the back of our change.”

;)

I keed, I keed.

And while I’m keeding, let’s look at some of the acronyms associated with EPU:

EPU Energy Processing Unit
EPU Economic Planning Unit (Malaysia)
EPU E Pluribus Unum
EPU European Payments Union (organization formed after WWII)
EPU Emergency Power Unit (F-16 Aircraft)
EPU Extended Power Uprate (nuclear power)
EPU Earnings Per Unit
EPU Environmental Protection Unit
EPU European University Centre for Peace Studies
EPU Electrical Power Unit
EPU European Political Union
EPU Elliptically Polarized Undulator
EPU Estimated Position Uncertainty
EPU Evil Parallel Universe (firedoglake)
EPU External Power Unit
EPU European Pharmaceutical Union
EPU Extended Processing Unit
EPU Emergency Psychiatric Unit
EPU Editorial and Publications Unit (Philippines)
EPU Electronic Processor Unit
EPU Excess Property Unit
EPU Electronic Program Update
EPU Equivalent Power Unit
EPU Exeter Political Union (Phillips Exeter Academ, Exeter, NH)

Now listen, both of you: I’m proud of you both and glad to have you here. Be careful of the acronyms you use to reference each other. ;)

BTW any congratulation including Andre the Giant

When the Divine Gamecock started crowing

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, January 6th at 1:35PM EST (link)

When the Divine Gamecock started crowing, I lost all my inhibitions about contentious screen names and initials. And that is why I chose “Kowalski” as my screen name. Clint Eastwood understood and saw fit to play my namesake in a major motion picture recently.

There are a few other historically relevant Kowalskis in film, beginning with the brutish rapist and “greasy Polack” Stanley Kowalski, played by Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire, a role which I think did more to tarnish my family’s surname here in America than simply executing everyone would have.

Then there is the other Kowalski, who drove a 1970 (the year I was born) Dodge Challenger in “Vanishing Point” as Larry Kowalski (played by Barry Newman). He was an ex-Medal of Honor winner in Vietnam who had turned into a speed addict and…

Well, watch the trailer (PG/13):

With a cinematic pedigree like that, it’s kind of amazing Redstate even let me use my own, actual last name here on the blog. It wasn’t until relatively recently that the surname “Kowalski” has been cleaned up a bit in popular culture by Clint Eastwood, to whom I’m indebted. Now I’m not a greasy, rapist Polack or a speed-freak Vietnam vet gone bad, I’m just a gruff and erstwhile father figure for the Hmong.

Such is life when Hollywood makes movies.

And you finish things....? (nt)

My story really has yet to be written

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, January 6th at 3:30PM EST (link)

I’ve contributed something like a 250,000 words or more here to Redstate in the time I’ve been here (diaries and comments included), but I consider that just the (very necessary) preparation for much bigger and better things to come. It’s always been a question of timing in terms of my dedication to writing in the blogosphere. There have been people here who have (more or less accurately) called me an underachieving blogger, but there are also personal circumstances that not many people know about that have prevented me from being more engaged that way.

The really good stuff is still yet to come. All of my past four years have been a prologue, because they’ve also been a rehabilitation and a convalescence. If I can survive the beginning of 2009 in business, then I’ll think about devoting more time and energy to writing in the blogosphere. I do have one project that I’m working on actively, about solar power.

One thing is that, yes, I’m still skeptical of the blogosphere in terms of its ultimate utility: not to the reader, but to the writer. I don’t know whether there is a single, serious blogger in this country that makes their living exclusively by writing blog entries. Arianna Huffington doesn’t count, because all of her work was funded by people who want to shape the culture, and through her connections.

If someone wants to correct me on that, please feel free to do so. But so far, there are no self-supporting bloggers who use the medium exclusively. It’s a crippled medium in that respect for someone who is trying to earn a living. That’s why I don’t devote as much time to it as I really want to.

And there’s no offense intended here to anyone at Redstate who puts in so many hours trying to get the political blogosphere off the ground: they’ve worked miracles in the past four years. But it’s really better to think of the blogosphere right now as a kind of frontier that the people who are really committed to panning for gold are best suited to open. I just don’t think there’s that much gold in them thar hills right now.

I think blogs and electronic opinion and news will eventually have to rely on a subscription system to produce the kind of revenue needed to really make a career out of it. Personally, if I started a blog, I wouldn’t allow comments: it wouldn’t be a blog, it would be a website. I’m not interested personally in listening to what the entire world of readers on the internet think about my writing. It’s an aesthetic thing.

Anyway I’m sure I’ve ruffled a few feathers now, so that’s it for today.

Do I sound like a snob?

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, January 6th at 3:41PM EST (link)

I’m not, really. The fact seems to be that opinions are as cheap as air. That’s why nobody at major newspapers respond to any of the comments or emails sent to them. All the rest is wasted time, designed to influence the rest of the peanut gallery: and it has to be that way. There’s not enough time in the world to respond to all the myriad complaints and grievances of n+1 people on the Internet.

Instead what organizations who are trying to survive and keep their best people do is to keep them out of the fray. They don’t encourage them to get involved with the bazillion people firing things back and forth. Try writing to the editors of Harper’s for example. They’re just not interested in taking the time to respond unless you support their point of view, or contest it within boundaries they’ve already set.

I said I wouldn't

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, January 6th at 3:56PM EST (link)

But just to expand on this a little, I love the kind of work Matt Labash does at the Weekly Standard, including all the pictures at Detroitfunk.com. But Labash writes articles, not blog entries, and they don’t have comments enabled.

I know, I know. There are stages to be gone through, internships to be earned, and crappy jobs to have to work until you can make it to the point where you’re given the kind of prerogatives as a writer that Matt Labash has. Maybe it will happen in the blogosphere eventually, but I just don’t see that as inevitable right now, and as much as I like technology and use it daily, I think it’s ultimately an impoverishing force in terms of how much work it takes to make a living doing it. It’s probably the worst career in the world for someone to go into from a consumer perspective: everyone wants everything to be free. You can’t pay the mortgage with free.

And I note bitterly...

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, January 6th at 4:21PM EST (link)

That even though you might not be able to pay the mortgage, the banks will always get their money back, whether it is from the liquidation of your property or directly from the taxpayer through the federal government. They are officially immune to the effect os making terrible decisions, and the government has made it so.

Explore banking, not blogging. That’s my career advice.

And besides the biggest problem

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, January 6th at 5:04PM EST (link)

The biggest problem with the blogosphere is that all of the people have more of the prerogatives that Matt Labash has in his writing, without any of the penalties, except getting banned from a website, which is no penalty at all.

So there is neither the incentive to work nor the penalty for not working, and that’s frankly the situation in online publishing by using blogs. People just donate it, and the rest throw rocks at it, but there isn’t anything being lost or gained except the next round of opinion.

who gains?

"Children's paddling pools to be drained under health and safety rules"

Finrod (Diary) Tuesday, January 6th at 12:55PM EST (link)

No, I’m not kidding. The UK proves it can be sillier than the US by deciding to require lifeguards for paddling pools only 18 inches deep:

A council has been told that the 18-inch deep pools should be subject to the same level of safety as beaches and public swimming pools.

The pools have been supervised by park attendants with life-saving training, but now officials say the paddling pools should be patrolled by trained lifeguards.

The council said it could not afford to employ lifeguards, and the pools may have to be drained.

H/T to Joshua Sharf at View From A Height

Last night the Hebrew Education Alliance in Denver held an event to promote moral clarity. Traffic was insane through Denver, so I got there near the end, but Joshua was able to get some video.

Of course, not everyone there was supportive. Here’s a sample from the Palestinian-supporting protesters.

In case you missed it, they’re chanting “Allah Akbar” in the first part of the video. Yeah, Hamas is all about peace. As Joshua says,

There’s nothing that says peace and love like a flag with a bloody fist punching through it…

There’s going to be a Rally to Support Israel’s Right to Self-Defense in Gaza on Sunday, Jan 11, at 2:00pm on the west steps of the Colorado State Capitol building (on the corner of Colfax & Lincoln). Yours truly will be there twittering what’s happening.

On voter fraud and voter registration fraud......

Attack Mode (Diary) Tuesday, January 6th at 4:01PM EST (link)

I just want to bounce this off of everybody here and see if I am on the right track.

My belief is that the two are really one in the same, or at least one make the other possible not only to occur but to not be cought when it does occur, thus lowering the numbers of “actual voter fraud”.

Voter registration fraud inflates the number of voters on the registrar, this allows for mysterious votes to “show up” after election day in order to change the course of a recount. In a recount there doesn’t seem to be any validation of whether the voter was fraudulently registered to vote in the first place, neither is there any validation that the voter actually exists.

In this case if a fraudulently registered voters ballot is then accepted by the canvassing board as a legal vote there then appears to be no case of voter fraud, although if the canvassing board where to question the validity of the registration itself it would be both a case of voter fraud and voter registration fraud.

Is this a good take on the situation?

P.S. mondol has not engaged in any other threads and I think he/she should be considered very suspect despite his/her longtime registration here on RedState. mondol has not written anything to deserve outright banning but I do not believe he/she is here in good faith.
