Listen, I’m frustrated as well. The transition to RedState 3.0 has been bumpy. Glitches abound, and my particular axe to grind is the Recommended Diaries List (although one can hardly fault NightTwister if he does not share this concern with me – sinve he’s had the top diary for many days now).
But my goodness, people! This is RedState, and we are conservatives (mostly). Why do you think they call it RUGGED individualism anyway? Sure, there are bumps, BUT THAT’S ALL THEY ARE IS BUMPS! (and yes, I’m yelling – hey, shoot me). If you want to display panty-waist whiny self-involved individualism, then frankly I question how deep your conservative convictions run.
Follow me for your thrashing…
The content put up since the launch has been nothing short of OUTSTANDING by the directors, contributors, and other front-pagers (and might I single out the inestimable Mark Kilmer for exceptional content). We have had major luminaries guest-posting with important messages. Yes, we users are a bit less able to do our thing lately, while the team works out the kinks. But you should have already noticed a whole WEALTH of good tools which are or will be coming on line. The future is bountiful, guys.
Posting is difficult, and flaky. But what, did you think the Founding Fathers went home when they got a hangnail? Did the pioneers crossing the prairies stop for mid-day Gameboy breaks, hitting up their Red Bulls and Twinkies? How about the Americans on D-Day? Dang, those guys are shooting at us. I’m outa here!
Please.
So all the RedStaters who have either wandered off, or reduced themselves to lurker status, or are on the verge of doing so, I say this:
Can we all just at least ACT like we got a pair?
Get back here. Contribute. Comment. Recommend. A little adversity just serves to build character.

Then I can use that venue to vent:
Why can’t I make comments on “REDHOT” items? I don’t get that. Or am I just a ‘tard who can see the button?
can we dial the knob a bit on recommended diaries? Maybe even customize it? “see all diaries with 2 or more reccs” type buttons?

Bill S (Diary) Friday, July 25th at 3:12PM EST (link)Since you brought it up, I will uncloak momentarily to unload, this one time. Then I will go away again and come back when things have improved.
We’re on week 2 now, and while things have improved somewhat, I see little noticeable difference. And I emphasize “noticeable.” While I realize there has been a lot of work going on, I haven’t seen it. Yes, there have been spates of errors, especially day one and yesterday. I was livid after (apparently) losing a posting (which appeared about an hour later), and lost it. I’m sure others have also and haven’t posted their frustrations.
Brian says “…too much new good stuff”. Really? Where? I can name three things that are new: 1) Look and feel – nice, but the old look was ok for me. 2) Improved profile page with list of postings from the user – probably the best enhancement I have seen, 3) tagging – doesn’t spin my tires…I can search with Google to find postings that match my interests. That’s it…that’s all I see.
Now let’s look at what’s been lost in the process:
1) Performance. It is marginally tolerable most of the time, unless you post at midnight. Improved somewhat, but still woefully inconsistent.
2) The severely broken Recommended feature. No need to describe it. Everyone knows it’s broken. The only thing I’ll mention is (as I’ve said before) the design of that block of content needs to be redesigned so it doesn’t take up so darned much space.
3) Consistency of content. The cache issues that have been tossed around repeatedly have caused no end of issues with consistency and currency of content, especially the Recent Comments blocks. This, along with item 4), make it virtually impossible to follow a conversation here.
4) Lost the “New!” indicators for postings. This is the worst, by far, of any of these items. I cannot tell what I’ve read, and eyeballing a string of posts to see who has responded to who is time-consuming and tedious. This has resulted in the worst loss that I see, item 5)
5) Loss of community. This is why I’ve hung out here for the last year – to interact with others. Not just to read the contributors’ diaries, although that is nice too. I want to have conversations with like-minded friends. RedState has gone largely from a two-way interactive site to a one-way “push” site where information goes out but it is difficult, at best, to interact about it. The myriad problems have made things even worse as regulars have departed due to the difficulty in communicating.
Steve mentions that there should be a sticky to discuss things. And he’s right. That “sticky item” should also have regular status updates from those who are working on the site to let people know what is being done and what progress has been made. Many of us, including me, donated money to RS3, and I think the least that you folks in command can do is to keep us up to date on what’s going on.
That’s it. I’ve said my piece. I have tried to be diplomatic about it and not get nasty. Now I’ll go back to work and sign out until things get better. Bye for now.

Let me second EPU Neil...I've been involved in rolling out new systems...
AceInTX (Diary) Friday, July 25th at 5:36PM EST (link)(Not blogs but point of sale networks)…and I know what it’s like to have a bunch of folks that can’t find their A**es with both hands taking bight’s out of your behind and I don’t envy you’re current circumstance.
For the other directors…I think a status blog that explains what the current problems are and what’s being done about them would go a long way to calming the anxiety we’re all going through. I would also include a rundown on what you have planned to deal with the complaints about missing or difficult features such as the “Recommend” button.
I believe taking a little time to fill everyone in would go a long way to tamping down some of the villagers threating to storm the Red State gates with pitchforks and axes. Change is a hard thing for anyone…but especially Conservatives since by definition we like to conserve what’s best about an institution and many fear the baby is being thrown out with the bath water. (I’m not one of them…but they exist).
Just a suggestion…I know you all have a lot on your plate but letting everyone know what’s up and what is coming would help us deal with the anxiety!

IJB Friday, July 25th at 6:11PM EST (link)…But you can’t fault the clientele for walking away from this either. They’re not a captive audience.
And what worries me about this transition is that it seems to be driving off a fair percentage of the commenters. And that’s bad – when a blog site loses those people, it may never get them back.
And that can’t be allowed to happen.
I’d say if they go through another week with problems as bad as this one, they should very seriously consider going back to the 2.0 system.
I'm trying to let the complaints just fly, but this one I will respond to
Neil Stevens (Diary) Friday, July 25th at 6:59PM EST (link)It’s genuinely amusing to me that RS 3 is being charged with breaking up our community, when RS 3 has restored the very features RS 1 had, which caused people to say RS 2 would mean a loss of community.

I agree with you for the most part EPU...
AceInTX (Diary) Friday, July 25th at 8:47PM EST (link)but I differ with you about congressmen reading what we write…They drop in….or more likely have an aid drop in using their name…plop down a ra ra puff piece on us…and they’re gone!
I too have tried to be patient and as I said above, I don’t envy Neil and the others one bit because I know what it’s like having people climbing up your back when you’re trying to solve complex problems…or worse…find a problem as simple as a two word string of text in a book sized program…so I’m holding fire at the moment…
That being said….I’m nervous because I’m in the dark…and I’m sure most Red Staters are like me…It would be nice to know if the lost features mentioned by BS will return. More specifically…it would be nice to know if the current format will be tweaked to make the site more conducive to conversation and debate…or are we permanently transitioning to a bulletin board system where we throw up posts and never get feedback on what we’ve said…or can’t follow a thread to keep a coherent conversation going beyond 12 posts or so.
Again…these aren’t gripes…at least not from me…at least I don’t intend them as such…But I like the idea of a progress report that includes current and constantly updated plans for the future. Make it a thread that stays at the top of the Recommended list. I believe something like this would go a long way to calming our anxieties and taking the heat off Neil and the guys struggling under the logistics of this transition.
Such as...?

That was a staple scoop feature we all used, but was never there in Drupal. Its disappearance, we were assured, would destroy the RS community.
And now with its return, i’m being told the new site will destroy the RS community (again).
I don’t mean to make too light of it. There are problems. I wish I could fix them all quickly without making it a full time unpaid job.

Bill S (Diary) Friday, July 25th at 9:37PM EST (link)and noted it already. I quote from my comment:
A very good feature, and it’s great that you’ve brought it back. But it still does not provide the level of tracking that we had in RS2. I want to know what everyone ELSE has posted new, and not just my own. But I am simply repeating myself now.
Look Neil, this is no personal commentary. Heck, I sure wouldn’t be spending the kind of time on this that you are. You know from our prior exchanges that I am in I/T and am aware of the kind of effort that system implementations take. And it is tough for me to separate this, a system implementation being done largely by a volunteer workforce, from a commercial operation like I’m accustomed to working with. My point is: I see little new function introduced with RS 3 (and a lot of function taken away) to justify the level of pain that’s been introduced. Now if there’s some plan to introduce even more new function, that’s great – I’d sure like to hear about it.
Maybe it’s just perception, but what I see is a significant drop in participation here. That is why I made the observation about the community. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong, and I apologize for bringing it up.

But I disagree with your second point. Sure, most of the same garden-variety info can be had elsewhere. But let me remind of 3 things that make RedState uniquely THE place to be:
(1) As Jeff Emanuel mentioned above, RedState is the most-read (by far) right-blog on Crapitol Hill. If it’s written here, it’s heard where it counts.
(2) We have better inside dirt, by far, than those other blogs, as well as expertise in a wealth of ‘non-normal’ areas. I don’t want to be a name-dropper (yeah right), but
* Erick Erickson is both a listener and participant in some of those cigar smoke-filled back rooms in Washington.
* Several others are real-life bona fide Washington insiders.
* Yet still OTHERS are actual lawyers.
* Pej knows more than anybody else about the nutroots and other domains of left-bloggery. He also holds the night shift down, so that unlike those other blogs, RedState has active content coming up 24×7.
* Mark Kilmer (aka The Great Kahuna, or TGK to his friends) has the Sunday Morning circuit hot-wired.
* Jeff Emanuel (formerly Airborne and/or Special Forces, I forget) not only goes to Iraq but has major inside connections to current military high-ups.
* I believe streiff has also (and I think he is a retired officer???)
* AdamC is our own version of Michael Barone. If you don’t know what that means, then never mind.
* Others have no other claim to fame (to my knowledge) than that they are blogging geniuses and hard workers.
Maybe you knew that we have some symbiotic partnership with Human Events — Human Events being only the preeminent conservative periodical on the planet.
So with all due respect, StephC, even while RS is limping, we beat the pants off of everybody else. Stay here and make a difference with us.

I see some people who are acting like a website redesign is enough to send them into post-traumatic stress disorder. Heaven forbid these people ever experience something truly stressful.
As someone who designs websites, and regularly goes through the switchover aftershock from customers, I can understand how truly stressful it is to pull something like this off.
Shortly after the switchover, I experienced a few problems with my account, which were promptly fixed by the awesome people behind RS 3.0. Their response was as prompt as possible, and they were totally understanding, cooperative and helpful. I want to congratulate them and tell them what an awesome job they did with this site, and I hope that they are able to resolve most of the (minor) problems ASAP.

BlackConservative (Diary) Sunday, July 27th at 4:19PM EST (link)Just been doing a bunch of work while getting used to the new site. In other good news, my wife is wonderful and being married is great, which is really the reason why I haven’t been posting as frequently as I used to. But I’m starting to come back to the dark side as we get closer and to the election and I start to get things to say.
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven.-Jesus Christ

Flagstaff (Diary) Monday, July 28th at 12:57AM EST (link)I’m complaining. All my comments have been meant as constructive criticism. Even when I timed how long it took me to get from previewing a comment to posting it to seeing it posted. (^:^)
(I know this responds to EPU, but I hope at least one of the Bigger Guys reads it, too. No offense, EPU.)
But I do disagree that emails directed to the honchos are the best way to communicate this kind of multi-faceted “problem.” The best way would be a permanent open blog where we could post our observations and receive progress reports. Of course, “best” is always subjective, but I have my reasons.
First, by posting those comments in one location for all to refer to, you’d probably receive fewer duplicate observations, or they’d be of the “me, too” variety. Thus, less for you to process. Depending on how it was done, it could even give you a sort of “inconvenience index,” by which to gauge just what glitches were causing the most angst.
Second, by centralizing the topic, we’d have a single place to look for progress reports. The anser would only have to be given once, not separately to forty different RedStaters. And we wouldn’t have to scroll through the Front Page stories that were still available to find one that was appropriate to put in a suggestion or observation. I stumbled on this one by accident.
Third, a central location would make it easier for each of us to avoid posting our own pet peeve multiple times. I have probably done that simply because I either haven’t been sure it was noted, or because I just forgot I was repeating myself myself. I do that from time to time to time.
But, if you’d really prefer to get emails, just reply to this and tell me so, Neil.

Its not really the technical glitches per se
Everton Monday, July 28th at 1:05AM EST (link)its the lack of user participation that i miss in the comments sections. I just checked hugh hewitt’s site and his first three diaries have @1,500 comments.
The recommnded diaries section is broken- i understand that the reason the diaries are not changing is because RS 3.0 is using a new “alogorithm”, perhaps the old one worked better?
It would do good.

My ire is really directed at the ‘take my ball and go home’ people. A bit less at the yipping and complaining – because for those who ARE dutifully staying in the saddle, a little constructive criticism is understandable.
I’m just hoping to inspire us all to be driven by RedState’s lofty attributes rather than by the temporary potholes.

There are quite a few that are promoting great topics for discussion. Unfortunately, due to the limited number of visitors to this site (hence this diary), only the selected few are commented upon which is one reason I won’t waste the time to even post here, even though I am a lifelong republican, unlike most of the RINO’s that captivate everyone’s attention here. Flagstaff (Diary) Tuesday, July 29th at 8:04PM EST (link)If the speed stays up, you’ve fixed the problem with posting new comments, and you’ve gone a long way towards helping us read other people’s comments.

This is maybe a bigger loss than you realized (although you’re probably getting the idea by now (^:^)).
Less critical, but for finding our own content (or others, for that matter), the “search” function still brings back only 30 matches, and the “Recent Comments” on our own profile page returns only 25.
All in all, I should have said, “Great progress, Neil (et al)!”

Oh, I know
Bill S (Diary) Tuesday, July 29th at 10:42PM EST (link)My point is that the real estate could be used better and would avoid the click. There’s a lot of whitespace in that box, and by doing a bit of formatting, all 10 could fit in that box pretty easily.
I’m picking nits. It’s a triviality, hardly worth expending a lot of intellectual capital. There are far more important things to worry about. I was just throwing the spaghetti against the wall.

So you feel that there is a DELIBERATE conspiracy by the site management to allow no comments on the diaries of people who are not ‘in the club’?
Psst – hey don’t tell anybody, but I have it on the highest authority that the Knights Templar really DID bury the treasure under a chapel in Manhattan that is accessed through the gravestone of a guy named Lane. And that cipher on the back of the Declaration? Yep, that one’s true too.

“The press is so powerful in its image-making role that it can make a criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”– Malcolm X, Audubon Ballroom, December 13, 1964
I'm not going anywhere, really.
Steph C (Diary) Wednesday, July 30th at 5:46PM EST (link)I lke the discussions here and I read quote a bit more than I comment upon, especially now with the transition.
There’s a lot of anger in this election year, understandably so. Coming here is very frustrating even if the information is not only relevant but extremely important. Frustration on top of the simmering anger most conservatives already feel is not a good combination.
If I have to log in every time I visit, naturally my comments are going to drop off as a result. If, in addition, I have to wait five minutes or longer for a post to load, my comments are going to fall further simply because I ran out of time.
The flip side is, when comments drop off drastically, no matter how much gravitas, no matter how much of anything a blog has going for it, people can and often do perceive it as failing so I hope the issues are fixed very soon.
Yes, I’m quite aware of Human Events and am a frequent reader and sporadic commentor there.
I don’t have a diary here because I already blog at two sites now, my own and a group blog effort. Due to health reasons, my own blog is on sabbatical, and blogging on the group effort is irregular for the time being.
Be that as it may, I’m still concerned with the happenings and will continue to visit and read.

Making this post, looks like there's complaints o' plenty.
skicougar (Diary) Thursday, July 31st at 10:06AM EST (link)as a web developer myself, i can appreciate just how much better it looks.
however, by the number of complaints and my own observations; it looks like you have traded looks for ease of use and navigation; two very bad choices by my experience.
and to this:
“The content put up since the launch has been nothing short of OUTSTANDING by the directors, contributors, and other front-pagers”
maybe so, but i think many do not know this as i’m sure many have dropped red state from their #1 site and maybe even out of their top 10. i know i have done this.
i have also dropped my comments significantly. i do not know what my rating was here as a contributor, but i have added things here that i have not seen anywhere else and i’m sure others have done the same thus making red state not improved but trying to make up for things/people it has lost.
Eat ‘em up Houston Cougars !
I get that redstate 3.0 is here to stay
Change Jar Conservative (Diary) Thursday, July 31st at 11:57AM EST (link)and complaining isn’t the main thing I do here(at least about redstate 3.0), but it would be nice to know that they are working to fix the more annoying things:
1) All in one column layout mentioned above.
2) The ability to get to multiple highly recommended diaries or at least list 10.
3) Being able to recommend with a single click instead of three.
4) Being placed automatically back into the thread where I just commented.
5) Better visibility of user diaries
And I do agree with Neil above that the idea was good, but these five things above have hurt the usability to the extent that I’m over here much less than I used to be because of ease of use.

browsers
DonPMitchell (Diary) Thursday, July 31st at 5:05PM EST (link)Ugh. I try Firefox every time they have a major release. Still too slow, and without antialiased fonts (cleartype) it just looks cheesy.
I use IE 7, and I use security zones, which is a great feature if you want to take the time to be significantly safer. But as The Register recently noted, IE is still the fastest browser, and the fonts look great.
Opera seems like a good browser, seems to be the source of innovation, which Firefox and IE are quick to copy. But again, no antialiased fonts.
In general, I get tired of having having browsers pushed at me. And frankly, I’m more comfortable with a huge corporation trying to make lots of money than I am with a moralizing political mass movement like the Free Software Foundation.
