Like so many of you who have been called by the political awakening occurring in this election cycle, I’ve been particularly heartened see such a strong conservative movement fueling much of this process. This promises to be a great year for real conservatives–those who stand up for our shared 100% pro-life principles, the liberties protected by our 2nd Amendment, and a firm understanding and respect for the Constitution. This is the time for a conservative resurgence!
I often speak about the motto of my alma mater, West Point: “Duty, Honor, Country,” and how these three words play a critical role in shaping our campaign message. Clearly, after the time I’ve spent talking with people across Wisconsin–and across the country–over the past 15 months of campaigning to be Wisconsin’s next U.S. Senator, “Duty, Honor, Country” is as much a part of your motivations as it is mine. I’m proud to call you fellow conservatives; I’m proud to call you friends…
…and never before has the need for us to draw a line in the sand in defense of liberty been more important…or so worth sacrificing for.
A Sacrifice That Matches The Need
I’ve put my entire life on hold and I’ve thrown all the resources I have into this race. These sacrifices–on face value–are not distinctive. What is unique, however, is the fact that I am missing time with my children (12, 7, and 3) who are each going through a phase in their life where I can add value and play an important role. While my family and I recognized this cost prior to my candidacy, no one else in this race has children as young as mine, which gives me a completely different perspective on this campaign…and a significantly more intense reason to fight. I haven’t already lived the American Dream–I’m still pursuing it and want to ensure it’s viable for all American generations–current and future. Put simply, I’m not just sacrificing money–which can be replaced, I’m sacrificing formative time away from my kids…which is irreplaceable. I’m completely willing to make this sacrifice, however, because our country–because this fight–is that important to me…and it is a lesson that must be passed on to Americans of all ages: stand up and fight for what you know is right, regardless of the sacrifices.
That’s what made America great, and it’s what will carry us through these times.
The Mission
We’re facing challenging times right now. Our economy has been in recession for more than a year, we have record numbers of unemployed Americans, and with tax increases looming it doesn’t appear that things are on pace to immediately improve. We’re engaged in a war on terror in two nations overseas with the constant threat of that expanding other areas, all the while we’re seeing terrorist attacks succeeding here on our own soil because our federal government has been negligent in keeping us safe. Along similar lines, we have a tremendous problem with illegal immigration and the far-reaching implications it has on everything from education to health care to housing to drug trafficking to national security and so on.
We can do better. American Exceptionalism doesn’t tolerate these problems. Neither do I…and there’s nothing I won’t do to ensure our nation’s future is secure.
Strike Swiftly. Strike Boldly.
Fixing our economy is simple—we MUST stop the out of control spending in Washington and reform our tax code so that we all have more of the money we earn in our pockets each pay period. We should eliminate the current progressive tax code that allows 53% of Americans to avoid paying federal taxes altogether and migrate toward a consumption based system that doesn’t require citizens to file an annual tax return, lowers the tax obligation for nearly ALL Americans, ensures that everyone participates and finally gives hard-working Americans the ability to determine how much money they want to send to Washington in the form of taxes. That’s real control over your government.
Next, we need to recognize that the War on Terror will not be won relying solely on antiquated legislation like the Patriot Act. Our enemy knows how to work around it and is forcing us to rely on failed detonation systems to be our only safeguard against car bombs in New York City and underwear and shoe bombs in our skies. This is not a sound strategy and is one that needs to be replaced immediately. We need leaders who will help determine a victory strategy in Iraq and Afghanistan—then allow our armed forces to pursue it instead of bogging them down in politically-correct rules of engagement that do little more than make our sons and daughters…our brothers and sisters…sitting targets.
Finally, we need to take illegal immigration seriously. This means actually enforcing the laws we currently have on the books, sealing the borders, sending those who are here illegally home, and ending the incentives that our government gives immigrants to come here illegally.
A Reason For Optimism
We’ve faced challenges like this before. We’ve been through hard times before. We’ve had big-government elitists tell us that they know how to make decisions for us better than we can for ourselves before…and each time, Americans—like you and me—have stood up and said “not on our watch.” This time is no different. I’m heartened by America’s dedication toward moving this country forward, but I’m also extremely optimistic about our future. I know that–together–we can stand up to and overcome anything that threatens our liberty. Together, we’ll demand accountability, integrity, and character from our elected officials. Together, we’ll ensure that this nation has a new birth in liberty and that this nation of the people, by the people, and for the people shall never perish from the earth.
I am honored to stand with you in our constant battle to preserve this nation we all love…and I look forward to watching the dawn break on a new morning in America with you this November.
God bless.

Dave,
namaste (Diary) Sunday, August 1st at 12:33PM EST (link)Through meeting you, listening to your interviews, and reading this post and earlier ones written by you, I am certain that you are who you say you are and that you are in this race for all the right reasons. I wish this is what mattered in political races. Apparently, in Wisconsin, this not always the case.
Johnson too has sacrificed time and money but only got in to the race in May. His candid speaking has made it clear that he does not have mastery of the issues or of the constitution. His frequent avoidance of speaking is even more telling. He has avoided tea party events, media questions and debates.
What Johnson does have is plenty of commercials and I’m sorry but even my 8 and 11 year old kids know that commercials only tell the consumer what they want to hear. The product needs to have a proven reliability for us to want to invest in it.
Unfortunately, you cannot possibly meet the 6 million people that live in Wisconsin so, despite the fact that you have been running a true grass roots campaign for over a year, more people still need to be exposed to you. You have proven yourself – I have heard you answer many questions on many different issues. You speak with conviction and I believe in your message.
I hope that in the next two months you are able to get the word out to many more people in Wisconsin. Advertising works and I hope that you will expose yourself through this outlet – I just hope the people are smart enough to check on the reliability of the candidate they choose to invest in with their vote.
Feingold is set up to defeat the candidate whose main qualification is to self-finance his campaign. He has yet to face a true grass roots candidate, which you are.
I understand that you were on the Dean’s List at West Point and the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago. For obvious reasons, I would say that this is worth mentioning.
With all that you are made of, I believe that you are the true threat to Feingold in November and the best candidate in the general election.
It's time to stop electing millionaires...
acollins41 (Diary) Sunday, August 1st at 1:56PM EST (link)As Dave pointed out, he is still trying to achieve the American Dream….which is an extremely valuable quality for a candidate to have. Most candidates are people who have already achieved success and go into Washington with frankly, not much to lose. People like Dave, who have a full life ahead of them have a very personal stake in what happens to this country. I think that gives him a unique and valuable perspective that Washington needs.
I’m tired of millionaires making decisions for me. I’m not wealthy and I don’t for one minute believe that someone who doesn’t have to worry about money, who can throw millions into a campaign, can understand what I go through on a daily basis trying to pay my bills.
I want my government run by people like me who understand the value of the dollar. People who cannot fathom spending money like our current Congress has….
It’s time to STOP electing out of touch millionaires or career politicians like Feingold who has been in office for 18 years. They do NOT know what is best for our country.
The millionaires you disdain
texasgalt (Diary) Sunday, August 1st at 9:55PM EST (link)don’t need to feel your pain or understand what you go through on a daily basis. They don’t owe you that and how would it help? To be a good representative of the people, they need to know and believe in the Constitution . . . and have some sense of how politics actually works.
George Washington was not a poor man. What matters most is what is between the ears and in the heart. Banging on successful people who have done well for themselves sounds like the crap populism of the Donks.
Now, having said that, Godspeed to Westlake and many thanks to him for his sacrifices and effort.
Millionaire, Schmillionaire...
tapout Sunday, August 1st at 10:37PM EST (link)I totally agree with texasgalt. I could care less how much money a politician has. It should not be about money–whether someone has it or doesn’t. That sort of classist split is exactly what progressives are trying to use to keep control over us. Our society is close to the only society in the history of the world where members of that society can change socioeconomic class simply by hard work. Where one is limited only by how big one dreams and how hard one is willing to work to achieve those dreams. My Grandparents were day laborers, my parents had college educations, and I am a Physician, two of my siblings are lawyers, and the other runs a company. In how many other countries in how many other times would that be possible? And more importantly how do we keep that torch of liberty that allows individual freedoms and American Exceptionalism to stay lit?
In deciding who to support for political office, I care about what is in the heart– Do they know the constitution? Do they believe in the principles of what makes America exceptional? Will they fight to restore common sense in Washington? Will they be a constitutional warrior? What will they do behind closed doors in Senate meeting rooms when pressured by the higher ups in their party to vote a particular way on a bill that only slightly limits freedoms. Will they stand up for principles they’ve been fighting their whole life for, or will they simply do what’s told of them? Perhaps they won’t even recognize that they’re even on a slippery slope?–Isn’t that how we got to the precipice we are on today?—We cannot afford to continue politics as usual!!!!
The only way I see that being a millionaire is a bad thing is if it’s the only thing–the main criteria, if that is the primary reason for a particular candidate being supported over another candidate. That is what is going on here, in this Senate race.
There is a clear distinction between Dave Westlake and his primary opponent.
Most millionaries spend MORE time worrying about money than the average person
JSobieski (Diary) Sunday, August 1st at 11:26PM EST (link)Most millionaires either own or run businesses. They worry about making payroll. They worry about paying suppliers. They worry about paying taxes. They worry about all sorts of monetary issues.
Money is a mixed blessing. Power and responsibility are two sides to the same coin.
I think a person who has never been responsible for people shouldn’t take the first step of financial responsibility for others by running for public office.
My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.
STOP THE MADNESS!
A reduction in the rate of spending increases is NOT a cut!
In-state tuition for illegals is NOT amnesty!
Requiring someone to pay their medical bills is NOT an individual mandate!
Reducing tax rates is NOT a tax increase!

Exactly Sobieski
texasgalt (Diary) Monday, August 2nd at 2:12AM EST (link)There’s a ton of people who have awakened due to Obama and his statist agenda. That’s a very good thing and they are to be encouraged.
I’d like to encourage them to be thoughtful and not play into the hands of populists and the throw em all out crowd. ” We the people ” doesn’t mean a fired-up file clerk should be in congress.
Thankfully, this time around there are a lot of great and qualified candidates like Mr Westlake who will do their country proud as a Congressman. If the voters don’t see fit to put him in office this time, I hope he will rally behind the Republican candidate, at least for a couple of years.
To clarify...
acollins41 (Diary) Monday, August 2nd at 11:39AM EST (link)I apologize, my previous comment didn’t come off as I intended…
I’m not opposed to millionaires running for office, the problem I have is when that is the reason they choose to run..as Johnson has previously said, someone suggested he run because he has a lot of money.
I’m just frustrated with candidates who lack substance and understanding of what it really means to represent the people and uphold the Constitution. Someone like Johnson is using his wealth as his main source of “fight” against Feingold.
We need true leaders. Leadership is not only about money.
tapout Monday, August 2nd at 1:24AM EST (link)To imply that the only path to leadership is through being a millionaire-business owner is ridiculous. I’d say that there are probably a few leaders who aren’t millionaires, what about military leaders? Doesn’t graduating from West Point and leading soldiers preparing them for battle constitute taking responsibility for others? I think the experiences Dave had leading a platoon of combat engineers as a line officer and being responsible for more men and assets than many business owners ever have has taught Dave leadership.
Dave Westlake graduated Dean’s list from West Point, and got his MBA also on the Dean’s list from the University of Chicago. He is a small business owner who has sacrificed his time to run his purely grassroots campaign while striving to keep his business afloat. He has not only studied the constitution and contemplated what a responsibility it is to protect it, he has taken the oath to defend it.
Dave is not a puppet of the old Guard Republican Establishment or NSRC. He is not managed or advised or spun by highly paid Washington insiders and consultants and handlers. His campaign is as grassroots as grassroots can be. He has been crisscrossing the state for the last 14 months shaking hands and getting his message out person to person. This is what is needed to win in Wisconsin. You cannot beat Feingold by only using airpower–TV and Radio ads, you have to get boots on the ground. Dave has the boots on the ground, he is out meeting the press and talking to patriot groups. He is building support from independents and Democrats, as well as conservatives.
He is the best choice to beat Feingold, and is exactly the kind of person we need in the U.S. Senate.
Now this is the way, tapout
texasgalt (Diary) Monday, August 2nd at 2:16AM EST (link)to support and promote a candidate.
And if and when Johnson wins the primary...
In The Hook (Diary) Wednesday, August 4th at 9:26AM EST (link)I hope like heck Dave gets his foot soldiers to work just as hard to get Johnson elected and kick Feingold out of that seat.
And likewise, if Westlake is able to win the primary, I hope Johnson is right there after the dust is settled to get him some fundraising sources and maybe even toss in some 527-style support.
“Hello? You play to win the game.”
Support conservatives that can win.
