From the diaries by Erick
As you well know, Speaker Pelosi’s version of President Obama’s signature healthcare overhaul passed the House by a razor thin margin of 220-215 late Saturday night. Seldom have more Americans been more aware of a piece of legislation passing Congress, as news of this historical occasion filled newspapers, blogs, and email and twitter accounts from coast-to-coast over the weekend. Ironically, final passage was delivered largely by pro-life Democrats, who earlier in the evening got their wish on an up-or-down vote on an amendment that would prohibit federal funds from being used to pay for abortions or to pay part of the cost of any healthcare plan that covered abortions. The amendment passed easily, by a vote of 240-194.
This vote was the culmination of six straight months – and many would argue years or decades – of negotiations, maneuvers, and secret deals. Keep in mind, dear reader, that we are talking about a dream come true for most Democrats, and all liberal Democrats. The House of Representatives actually passed fundamental and even transformational reform of the American healthcare system. Never mind that H.R. 3962 creates at least 111 new federal boards, commissions, and bureaucracies, or that it raises taxes by $766 billion over 10 years, or represents a federal government takeover of 1/6th of the American economy – these are all considered good things by the Democrat leadership and most rank-and-file Democrat members. Even better news for liberals, House passage of this bill comes at a time when Democrats fully control the U.S. Senate and have a White House unalterably committed to the same goal. One would expect House Democrats and liberal sympathizers to be jubilant on their accomplishment. What could possibly stop them from signing healthcare reform into law in mere weeks?
A radical, foaming-at-the-mouth, hell-bent commitment on the part of the most liberal members in their party to the expansion of abortion and abortion funding at all costs – that’s what. In a letter penned the very next business day after passage, 41 Members within Pelosi’s Democrat House caucus have signed a letter pledging to oppose final passage of this healthcare overhaul if the ban on federal funding for abortion remains (not released yet – apparently awaiting more signatures).
The amendment that would bar federal funding to be used to pay for abortions – generally known as the Stupak-Pitts amendment – would not overturn Roe vs. Wade or prohibit abortions of any kind for any reason in private healthcare plans – present or future. Nor would it prohibit anyone that gets a federal healthcare plan from paying for an abortion on their own – a mere $375 these days. It would not even prevent state and local governments from paying for abortion or insurance covering abortion services with non-federal funds. It would only prohibit federal funding of abortions within plans provided by the federal government. Even if this provision was retained, Democrat members could – and certainly would – work tirelessly to remove the prohibition after the healthcare overhaul was signed into law and implemented.
So, Democrats are willing to sabotage their key legislative reform effort of the century because they are more committed to the expansion of abortion rights – and specifically federal funding of abortion – for Americans than they are to universal healthcare for Americans?
Yes, that’s correct – you’ve got it now.
The draft letter by the 41 Democrat House members states, in part:
As Members of Congress we believe that women should have access to a full range of reproductive health care. Health care reform must not be misused as an opportunity to restrict women’s access to reproductive health services.
There is no “restriction” of women’s “access to reproductive health services.” A quick review of the facts: these are women who either do not have health insurance or who the government has determined cannot afford to purchase their own health insurance. Consequently, the federal government will step in and provide health insurance for free or at a greatly reduced rate – something for nothing or almost nothing, complements of the American taxpayer and the ever-willing Chinese. The only caveat? They cannot use their government provided healthcare plan to get an abortion. They are still just as capable and free to obtain an abortion as the day before they received their free healthcare plan.
So the bottom line is this: Mr. Obama, Mr. Reid, and Ms. Pelosi will develop a perhaps more subtle but very real way to include abortion services in the final healthcare overhaul bill. It won’t be overt, but it certainly will not include the clear and unambiguous language of the Stupak-Pitts amendment. It will have just enough vague terms and legislative jargon to provide a somewhat plausible cover for just enough pro-life Democrats to tell their constituents that they did not vote to provide taxpayer funds for abortion, in order for the final package to pass. Oh yes, certainly they will have voted for the $1.7 trillion worth of other government healthcare goodies, but not “healthcare” that would expressly pay for killing. Never.
It should be reason enough to oppose this monstrosity because it tramples upon the express wording and intent of the U.S. Constitution and the 10th Amendment (yes, the Constitution is still the law of the land, technically), and makes a mockery of the General Welfare clause. In sardonic irony, a bill which seeks to “reform” healthcare would fundamentally harm the delivery of healthcare services to all Americans.
A glimmer of hope remains still. While all those reasons above sadly cannot muster a congressional majority in opposition to the bill, the life principle just might spell death to government-run healthcare. Having been around Capitol Hill long enough be become a wee bit pessimistic about the odds of witnessing courage and principal on a mass scale, I nevertheless hold to the possibility that just enough elected leaders will consider the lives of the born and unborn they will be saving as they cast a Nay vote on federalized healthcare when it comes back around.

Nice work
Dan Perrin (Diary) Friday, November 13th at 10:13PM EST (link)really, nice.
Dan do you really believe healthcare is dead?
antisocial (Diary) Saturday, November 14th at 1:03AM EST (link)I get that impression from your recent diaries. I have no doubt some health insurance bill will be passed before 2010 elections. With or without federal funding for abortion, this is a bad bill. I would suggest opposition should focus on other aspects too.
This is a dream chance for democrats. They are in a hole if they don’t pass it. If they do pass it the impact won’t be felt until 2013. And then they will be in deep s$@t. So either way they ARE going to be impacted.
Trust a marxist not to miss his chance. Remember “never waste a crisis”.
PS: I am actually willing to bet on a bill passing next year. I will oppose it in all forms but that just won’t matter.

rbdwiggins (Diary) Friday, November 13th at 11:17PM EST (link)It really is a very thoughtful, well-written diary. Too bad Erick bumped it to the front page so soon. At least a couple of days on the recommended diaries list was probably in its future.
To the substance of the diary: It won’t be the inclusion, or exclusion, of federally funded abortion that kills this bill. Although, it certainly is fun to watch the Progressives and Blue Dogs divide their party.
The electorate is becoming increasingly aware that the cost of reform can’t be measured in dollars alone, and a growing majority understands that the price is too high and we simply can’t afford it.
President Obama’s own fiscal and economic policies will be responsible for its failure.

Menlo (Diary) Friday, November 13th at 11:39PM EST (link)Barbara Lee (D-CA), Jane Harman (D-CA), and Kristin Gillibrand (D-NY), among others, have ranted about how this amendment would “send women to back alleys to die.”

I've never understood that argument
Next93 (Diary) Saturday, November 14th at 2:03AM EST (link)I’ve never understood the argument that if abortions aren’t legal, they won’t be safe. Since when does society worry about the safety of someone breaking the law?
By that mode of thinking, no junkyard should have a dog larger than a pug, and all barbed wire should come with safety caps for the barbs. How about if the DNR pre-kills engandered animals so poachers don’t have to face the possibility of back strain.

Menlo (Diary) Saturday, November 14th at 5:09PM EST (link)“Legal” doesn’t mean “safe” either. Ever see what happens when lawmakers attempt to regulate abortion centers to the same standards of veterinary clinics?

Abortion clinics cannot even meet basic standards.
sacody Saturday, November 14th at 6:13PM EST (link)The abortion clinic in Sioux Falls is constantly in a battle with the state of Sourth Dakota over basic requirements for abortion providers. Abortionists have become so desperate in South Dakota that they will literally drive you from Rapid City to Sioux Falls for your abortion just to keep their business going. I remember in college when we toured the Red River Valley abortion clinic. It was very disturbing considering that was what they wanted us to see as a public relations event. Seriously, the lady giving us the tour cleaned rooms at a local nursing home for a part-time job on the side, and the college girl sitting at the front desk was a women’s studies major at my college. Basically, day-to-day operations at the Fargo clinic were being run by a janitor and a student liberal activist. These were the people giving abortion referrals and counseling. Talk about quality control!!!
PS: In an entirely unintentional comidic gesture on my part, I showed up in my normal election season garb with “re-elect Bush” pins all over my winter coat. What I did not know was that I was running about a minute late, and the lady was already speaking to the group. I tried to open the door to the clinic but it was locked and an alarm went off. I immediately got an allarmed response from the person watching me through the camera as to why I was there. They let me in and quickly got reassurances from the professor that I was a part of the group. I have never seen pro-abortionists with such a worried look before. They thought for sure the smack down was coming….but, it was just me.

“A radical, foaming-at-the-mouth, hell-bent commitment on the part of the most liberal members in their party to the expansion of abortion and abortion funding at all costs – that’s what.” At this point I felt a little hope and change that this bill may just go down. I’m guessing that when this battle blows out into the open people will lose their patience with this process.
My healthcare bill; 1.unpaid medical bills will be charged against patients social security account, and person will automatically be enrolled in Medicade program at full cost. 2. Foreign invaders will be treated as soon as ICE is notified, and their foreign embassy is informed they are responsible for the costs. Non-payment will result in Patient and Ambassador being deported on same bus.
I hope you're right, but I doubt it.
Next93 (Diary) Saturday, November 14th at 2:09AM EST (link)The pro-abortion crowd’s just mouthing empty threats. They’re never going to vote against health care. None of these people have any courage, political or physical. They kick and scream in order to ensure that the final bill will have some juicy bit of pork just for them, but at the end of the day they’re a unlikely to go against the party as Obama is to veto a health bill that will raise the defecit.
Oh, and anyone who thinks that the Republicans are going to be able to roll back this boondoggle once they take the congress back, you’re living in a fantasy world. Once they’re enacted, social programs never go away, no matter how toxic they turn out to be. They only get larger. Don’t beleive me? Look at Social Security, Medicare, and all of the Johnson-era Great Society programs.

dclamage Monday, November 16th at 12:22PM EST (link)It was once true in the past, before Roe v. Wade, that poor women were at risk for either having to bring a bay to term or take their chances on a medical practitioner whose skill and experience was not properly vetted. The latter having caused injury or death.
Nowadays, women of principle tend to have the baby. They might put it up for adoption (plenty of people are looking to adopt). Or they may choose to raise it themselves (with hopefully a lot of support from their families).
But the old days are gone. Even without Federally funded abortions (which has always been the case), no woman has to run the risk of a “back alley” abortion.
– Dan Clamage
I think you missed the point
Menlo (Diary) Monday, November 16th at 11:47PM EST (link)Abortionists TODAY are “medical practitioners whose skill and experience are not properly vetted.” In addition, the conditions in many abortion centers are not much improvement over back alleys.
Regardless of funding, it’s no “safer” legal than illegal, either for the woman or for the child.

olddog Monday, November 16th at 11:23PM EST (link)want this so bad, because it contributes to Eugenics. That, is one of their main goals , as Judge Ginsburg said, roe vs wade keeps certain types from breeding. leaving open, exactly, who are the types they don’t want to breed. Why , I guess its the mob, the gun and bible clutching, Pelosi described as Nazi’s middle America that are apposing their dismissal of the Constitution, and personal freedom’s, Our so called Representatives and Senators We have sent to Washington, supposedly representing our views, are dismissing us.
So its time to increase the unemployment rate in D.C. in 2010, remember to vote, but especially ” Remember next November.” They count on us, losing heart or forgetting.
