but he is also great on national security and has been a leader in Congress in advancing the fight against Islamofascism. I put him closer to a Giuliani-type than a Ridge or a Specter.

I think you have to look at blue statewide races pragmatically and take what you can get. Kirk can win the Senate race and I don't see anyone else who can. For the GOP to hold a senate seat in Illinois is a big plus in regaining majority status. Kirk would be much better than Snowe or Collins and not nearly as good as Coburn or Kyl. But I'll take him.

In the meantime, can we please have a strong conservative candidate in North Dakota? In Nevada?

And I also no nothing about IL politics. Apparently you do, so when you publish stuff like this comment would you please either elaborate enough so we, the great unwashed :-) , can have an idea why you've formed the opinion you've offered.

I think you're a thoughtful guy and I'd like to have an idea who the competition is and why is a better choice. And, I'm not implying Kirk - or anybody else you write fondly about - is actually somebody you support, just somebody you think will - can? - win. Heck, I write stuff about how McCain is pretty much unbeatable in AZ and heaven knows I won't be voting for him, but I do note the reasons why I think hes unbeatable.

Thanks. And keep at it. You provide good perspective for Neanderthals like me.

Mel "I accomplished nothing other than lying to my constituents" Martinez. I guess I'm taking it a bit personal as the man lied to me personally on immigration. And I don't stand with his support for the homeowner bailout bill nor was I enthralled with his support for the edited SCHIP legislation.
I hope we can come up with a solid conservative, pro-capitalism,
pro-small government candidate to replace him. They've tossed
quite a few names around, everyone from Jeb Bush to Connie Mack, Marco Rubio to Vern Buchanan. None of them suit my "ideal" choice for the seat but then I wonder if that choice is just a dream.
Is there anyone out there who could actually "fit" into my ideal conservative mold? I don't know if there is but there is one thing
I damn well do know and that's that I am tired of "settling" for the lesser of two evils or for who will do the least damage while they are in office! I am sick and tired of RINO's and acceptable failure
based on good intentions! I'm ready to fight but so many of our representatives are ready to roll over and play dead! And now lately
if it looks like their re election is going to be a tough fight they quit or switch sides! Their ideals and beliefs are like hot and cold running water whose temperature depends on their own personal whims and NOT the desires of their constituents. It's getting to the point that nutty ideas like term limits for EVERY stinking politician,
bureaucrat and government employee is starting to make sense in
a twisted sort of way.
God Bless America
 God SAVE America!

Mark Kirk is pro abortion, pro homosexual special rights, pro Amnesty, pro gun control, thought crimes co sponsor. I would not support him for US Senate or Governor in Illinois
