NY 20 Race Tightening ( Tedisco Barely Ahead)

With less than three weeks until the NY-20 special election, Scott Murphy (D) has cut James Tedisco’s 12 point lead to just 4 points, according to a new Siena Research Institute poll

Tedisco now leads the race 45% to 41%.

Key factor: “While two weeks ago, voters said Tedisco would do a better job than Murphy representing them on six issues, Murphy now leads on two of those issues, including the most important issue for 20th C.D. voters: the economy.”

A Democratic poll yesterday also showed the race tightening.

We need to win this race.  What gives?

In the eyes of the uneducated

the Democrats have the advantage of the economy. I don’t know if any ads are up there yet, but I’m sure Democrats will still be running against George W. Bush for this election, as well as in 2010 and in 2012.
The sad part about this is that the Democrats don’t have a plan for the economy. I just don’t know why the American people are being duped and rolling around in ignorance when it comes to these elections anymore.
And no one seems to care about it anymore.

The GOP is to blame for this

Democrats have an advantage on the economy because in election after election they actually TALK ABOUT THE ECONOMY.

Republicans, afraid no one will understand, thusly avoid talking about the economy because they think no one will understand how free market economics works. In reality, people understand market economics almost by instinct, and they just need Republican candidates to explain how market economics applies to the problems of the day.

Tidesco needs to go out and start hammering away at the economy. He needs to talk about the economy and what it needs all day long every day.

Elizabeth Dole’s flaming demise is EXACTLY what the GOP needs to avoid doing. Hammering away at some “Godless Americans” conspiracy when people – God-fearing and Godless alike – were really uneasy about THE ECONOMY.

Tidesco needs to stop the GOP’s historic insanity and spend every day from now until the election talking about the economy and convince the electorate that he knows the way forward and that his opponent will only make matters worse.

The distorted stock market in the last 2 days are helping the MSM soundbites in favor of Murphy. nt

I think the Rush imbroglio is more likely to be the major culprit ...

Let’s face it; at its core, the story the media is selling with the entire “I hope he fails” sturm and drang is that the GOP is banking its future success on the nation’s suffering.

It’s in the newspapers, it’s on the network news, it’s on CNN and MSNBC. It’s what the wire services are providing to the local newspapers of the district as what’s happening at the national level.

Like all of us here should know by now, the average person doesn’t think or even know much about politics – so he/she sees these headlines and thinks; “How awful! Those Republican bastards want the economy to tank!”

Worse, the average person doesn’t listen to talk radio, and despite the apparent huge increase in Rush’s ratings, I doubt enough of them are NY-20 voters wanting to find out for themselves what all the caterwauling was about.

Which is why I have argued that Rush should stop preaching to the choir, step out from behind the Golden Microphone and make the rounds of the network and cable shows and forcefully correct the record. With the bully pulpit he has with 20 million regular listeners, he has the wherewithal to keep them somewhere in the region of honest.

However, Tedisco may have made some local missteps, and that could be the main thing – my solution for this type of situation as always is; retail politics. Tedisco should double down and do a lot more handshaking, taking questions from his prospective constituents and answering them without trying to please everyone.

But if we are looking at a non-local, national reason for why the race seems to have tightened up so much, I think Rush is it.

I too would love to see Rush get as much exposure as possible...

It would be good to get the “spin doctors” out of the way and let the whole nation get a big dose of what he has to say. Then they could make up their own minds about him and his message

To be fair

The GOP really does need the economy not to recover too quickly. (Full Disclosure: I’m a liberal) If the economy recovers quickly, Obama gets the credit (rightly or not). If the economy does not recover at least some by 2012, voters will ask what all the huge deficits are getting them. I think many people can live with huge deficits for a long time as long as they feel the economy is getting better. I don’t see any way that the Republicans can get out in front of an improving economy and get any credit for it, even where credit is due. That doesn’t mean that Republicans really want the economy to fail. In an ideal world (for them), the economy would improve and Republicans/conservatives would get credit for at least attempting to hold down deficits. Americans might then decide that huge deficits are not worth the improved economy. But I don’t see that happening.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think Rush really wants the economy to keep declining (and it definitely wasn’t what he was saying), but I think he and other conservatives probably should be. Otherwise, there may be potential for an entire generation to believe (rightly or wrongly) that Obama and the Democrats “fixed” the economy.

Tedisco will take over his campaign!

Sunnie57 Friday, March 13th at 3:09AM EST (link)

Jim Tedisco said something about taking over his campaign entirely, rather than allowing the GOP to run it somewhat. Jim politely said while the GOP knows how to run the GOP, he knows the 20th district more than the GOP (I’m paraphrasing.) Maybe taking over his campaign will help Jim, and remember, he’s still ahead.

Jim has a great personality, but is tough, too. He received national attention when took on the former Governor Spitzer when Spitzer wanted to give driver’s licenses to illegal aliens. Several of the 9/11 terrorists were illegals, so would be want them to have driver’s licenses. NO WAY. I think Mark Levin had Tedisco on his radio show when Jim fought the “steamroller” (Spitzer called himself a steamroller, but more than met his match with Tedisco).
