2010 Senate/Gov News ( KS,TN,WI,OH,IA,CT)

KS Open Senate Seat (R)

Rep. Todd Tiahrt has kicked off his campaign to run for the U.S. Senate in 2010.

Tiahrt’s Saturday announcement sets up a clash with fellow Republican Rep. Jerry Moran over the seat now held by Republican Sam Brownback.

Sebelius hasn’t expressed an interest in the Senate, but she’s term-limited as governor.

WI Governor Doyle (D)

Fmr Congressman Neumann said he’s leaning “very heavily” toward getting into the race, though he won’t decide until fall.

It’s been a decade since Neumann served in public office. He represented Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District from 1995 to 1999, before losing by a 2-percent margin to Sen. Russ Feingold in the 1998 Senate race.

TN Open Governor Race (D)

U.S. Rep. Lincoln Davis (D) announced Thursday he won’t run for Tennessee governor in 2010.

OH Strickland (D)

Fmr Congressman Kasich said he is considering a run for governor in 2010 and that he will make a decision sometime this year on whether to challenge current Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland. But he said the focus of his speech Friday was Ohio jobs.

CT Rell (R)

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz says she’ll be seeking the Democratic nomination for governor for the 2010 election.

Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell hasn’t announced whether she’ll seek re-election.

IA Culver (D)

Republican State Auditor David Vaudt said Tuesday he’ll decide whether to run for governor within a few months.

Vaudt, in his second term as auditor and one of two Republicans who hold statewide elective office, has often been mentioned as a leading GOP candidate to run in 2010 against Democratic Gov. Chet Culver, who is expected to seek a second term.

SC governor's race

jfpurdue01 (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 12:25AM EST (link)

Sanford is term limited, so it is a wide open election. Of course, SC is always expected to go republican, but here are some polling numbers comparing two of the top republican candidates head-to-head with two of the top democrat candidates:

Gresham Barrett (R): 31%
Jim Rex (D): 36%

Gresham Barrett (R): 40%
Inez Tenenbaum (D): 39%

Henry McMaster (R): 36%
Jim Rex (D): 36%

Henry McMaster (R): 39%
Inez Tenenbaum (D): 39%

Those polls were taken in July of 2008 (during the presidential election) so take that for what its worth.

Isn’t Lt Gov Bauer running for Governor? I think many always underestimate him.

Any Kansas posters? Who is the better candidate for us in general?

FL

Congressman Putnam (R), one of the most promising young Republicans in the House, plans to head home to Florida to run for the post of Agriculture commissioner, which could be a stepping stone to a future gubernatorial bid.

Putnam’s 12th District, based in Polk and Hillsborough counties in the west-central part of the state, has a heavy Republican tilt. In a bad year for the GOP, Putnam won 57.5 percent of the vote in 2008.

AL Governor Race (R) Open seat

Congress Davis (D) is announcing his run for Governor of Alabama.

Davis is the first Democrat to formally announce his candidacy for governor. Ron Sparks, Alabama’s commissioner of agriculture and industry, has said he is considering a run for governor in 2010. Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom, a former governor and son of a former governor, has said he also is considering the race.

Among what is expected to be a crowded Republican slate of candidates to succeed Gov. Bob Riley, only Tim James of Greenville, son of former Gov. Fob James, has formally announced he is running.
