CO:

Attorney General John Suthers — the lone Republican to announce a 2010 bid for U.S. Senate — said today he will not seek the seat after all.

Lt Governor Mongiardo announced he plans to seek the democratic nomination for US Senate next year. He ran against and narrowly lost to Senator Jim Bunning in 2004.

I hope the NRSC is trying to recruit strong candidates this year. Who should run for us in Colorado now?

In a related development, former Rep. Scott McInnis (R-Colo.) told the Post that he is not interested in running for Senate, and is instead eyeing the governor’s race

If he can be persuaded, that is, would be the best possible candidate.

Also, former Lt. Governor Jane Norton would be good, as would former CO Attorney General and U.S. Interior Secretary Gail Norton.

is held in high esteem in Colorado statewide. Coffman is too also but does not have the name recognition of Owens. Coffman is a hero. He resigned his elected post to go serve in Iraq and then returned and ran and was elected to another office.

Although he’s also a possibility for Governor, and quite frankly I’d rather have him there.

John Elway has also been mentioned as a possible candidate, but he’s often rumored to be a candidate for various races.

I have no idea about his politics but having heard him give probably a hundred sports interviews, some of which were rather lengthy, I was always struck with the unmistakable impression that he was dumber than a box of rocks. Obviously being John Elway is a pretty good place to start from, but at some point he’d have to actually know something.

public holds his ex-wife in high esteem and many feel he abandoned her after a serious health scare. He went low profile after that only to run into controversy over a dot com that went bust.

Has never show any “fire in the belly” to make a run. I am not sure he would be a viable candidate. He would need some seasoning before jumping in to run for Governor of Congress.

If he has any aspirations, he needs to start lower and work into it, get involved in commissions or boards first.

Congressman Coffman

What about Congressman Coffman he has been elected statewide already?

We'd actually like Mike Coffman to finish a term before moving on to another for once.

Mike Coffman is great, but he’s jumped from one office to another without finishing a term. His most recent office before elected to U.S. House was Colorado Secretary of State. Many Republicans here were upset that he waiting to resign until he knew he’d win, which meant Ritter got to name his replacement instead of holding a special election. Now we have a Democrat SoS that Ritter chose which removes the only real oversight we had into his administration.

I believe he is still head of Promise Keepers, with a resume as full as Obama’s is empty. If I’m not mistaken, he brought the Buffaloes their first share of a national championship, and would be a formidable candidate in a statewide race.

There's quite a few names bubbling up in Colorado.

I’m not sure I’m at liberty to name them in this forum because they haven’t really announced anything. Suffice it to say the future looks bright.

Tom Lucero did just announce that he is running for CO-4 against Betsy Markey (who has now gone 81 days without an office anywhere in the State to service her constituents).

From the Denver Post. Dick Wadhams, head of the state GOP, cited two other potential candidates: Republican National Committee member Mark Hillman, a former state Senate majority leader and interim state treasurer; and Aurora City Councilman Ryan Frazier.

Personally, I’d like to see Hillman as our next Governor and Frazier as our next Senator. We really need both of them, and I’d hate to see them opposing each other.

A (D) poll on race has Owens leading Bennett

The Democrat beat three potential GOP opponents in hypothetical 2010 match-ups — he bested former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo 48-39, and scored six-point leads over state Attorney General John Suthers and former U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis, though both said Monday they weren’t interested in the race — and polled three points behind former Gov. Bill Owens, who hasn’t indicated any interest in running for the Senate.

What has Owens been up anyways? He was so popular and then you hear nothing?
