Denver Public Schools superintendent Michael Bennet will be named Saturday as the future U.S. Senate replacement for Interior Secretary nominee Ken Salazar, according to two Democratic sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Gov. Bill Ritter is expected to name Bennet on Saturday, ending a brief but frenzied period of speculation about who will take the seat of Interior Secretary nominee Ken Salazar.
This is a big shocker of an appointment seeing the man has never held political office and seeing many CO Dems admitted they were interested.

Wasn't Bennet Philip Anschutz's employee for a long time?

Anyone who thinks this two-time loser should be our ’10 nominee is nuts. It’s not that he’s a bad man, it’s just that he obviously can’t win.
John Struthers, on the other hand, won big in ’06 for AG, obviously, not a great year. He should obviously be our nominee. This isn’t even close.

good news
dingo (Diary) Saturday, January 3rd at 4:51PM EST (link)This is good news.
Bennet has never run for political office before, and is not known by the public. He may turn out to be an exceptionally great candidate, of course, but I doubt it. I don’t understand what Gov. Ritter was even thinking here.
This is just the latest bit of good news from the Senate. Although the GOP has no realistic chance of winning back that chamber in 2010, I now think that we have a decent chance of picking up seats, and thus preventing the Dems from breaking a fillibuster.
The CO incumbent is weak, the IL incumbent, whoever he/she is (probably Burris) will be weak, and if Caroline Kennedy is really chosen in NY, than Pete King will have a real chance to win that seat. And DE is also a possibility too, since some voters may be bothered by the attempt to create a Biden dynasty in this way, especially if the GOP gets Rep. Castle as a candidate.
The GOP now needs to challenge some incumbents, besides Reid. If they do well enough, than they could certainly set themselves up to win back the Senate in 2012.

Other then Reid, I think we can possibly challenge...
RandomGuy (Diary) Sunday, January 4th at 9:39PM EST (link)Chris Dodd, if we get the right candidate. It seems that some people are touting Chris Shays for the job, but while I wouldn’t really mind him, I think Rob Simmons, who held a MUCH more blue district between 2000 and 2006, only to lose by like 150 votes, would be a much better candidate. He’s kind of a weird guy, in that he voted fairly moderate and won a lot of moderate support, but seemed better liked by conservatives then Shays. I think it was more just that he’s a likable, decent guy while Shays is…kind of an asshole.
Anyhow, he’d be the best candidate, other then Jodi Rell of course who I don’t think is interested. He’d be a nightmare for Dodd.
