Not sure if you were around when Ronnie and Nancy were in the WH, but the bit about consulting astrologist, mediums and all that stuff is true. After Reagan was shot, Nancy was quite a handful with this stuff and caused lots of problems for his staff with having to clear days with her astrologer.

Was it a fair shot by Obama, frankly NO, and showed a lack of class, but it was a bit of a weird thing back in the day for us Republicans. Sort of one of those crazy things that your mom or maiden aunt might have done and you shook your head over and smiled because you loved them anyway.

Making a joke about something his widow did 25 years ago steps over the line which Mr. Obama himself set when he insisted that the candidates’ families were off limits. There should be an even steeper standard for widows of former presidents.

He should’ve just made the point about not being able to consult directly with deceased presidents he respects — and therefore having to “consult” them by studying up — without the Nancy Reagan reference. It was unnecessary for the point.

…he made a personal apology in a phone call to Mrs Reagan. It doesn’t fully make up for the crass comment to me, but pretty clearly he immediately recognized that it was a terrible thing to say and that you can’t make such dumb, tasteless jokes in a press conference as president elect (I’m not of the mind that we should spend a lot of energy on the soapbox about stupid, tasteless jokes in private, having told a few and not being a hypocrite).

Considering this is the first time Obama has spoken publicly since his speech on Tuesday night, it doesn’t bode well. Besides being untrue, it was a thoroughly classless thing to say. When you have to call a 86 year old former first lady to apologise then you’ve got a problem to begin with.

Obama seems to have a need to denigrate other people and he needs to grow up. It’s a side of him he has been careful to hide thus far.
