Lets Discuss Possible Woman VP Candidates

Pros/Cons

Lets have a serious discussion on what woman McCain could possibly nominate for VP slot. Please give your pros/cons to them.

  1. Gov Palin- many on here seem to have fallen in love with her but she comes from Alaska a lock for GOP and is only in her 1st term of Governor. Has she really been tried and tested? Does her librarian image hurt her? Would voters be comfortable with her becoming President possibly?

  2. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson TX- A very popular Senator from state of Texas and that may be her biggest drawback as the Dems would paint her as being another Bush and her not rock solid anti abortion stance could hurt McCain

  3. Congresswoman Candice Miller Michigan- Elected Statewide in Michigan as a Fmr Secretary of State and a current Congresswoman from Michigan a battleground state she could place Michigan in McCain’s side. She would probably play very well with many moms out there but her drawbacks are never being on nat’l stage and whether she can pump voters up for McCain is questionable.

  4. Ms Rice- Current Secretary of State who has a very impressive resume and being part of Bush team could hurt her plus she is a social liberal.

Others:

Congresswoman Capito WV, Congresswoman Emerson MO (both from usual battleground states especially Missouri but both may not be ready for prime time and Capito’s more liberal stance on abortion could hurt her)

Thought? I am actually thinking Congresswoman Miller could be a very smart pick by McCain

You're missing the two more likely female VP choices

StevenK (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 9:56PM EST (link)

If McCain is going to go with a female Vice President he’s much more likely to go with one of his top advisers, pro-choice Meg Whitman or pro-life Carly Fiorina.

I prefer Fiorina mainly because I think her narrative about the Compaq merger works perfectly with McCain’s support of the surge in Iraq.

OK.

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 10:00PM EST (link)
  1. Palin. No. Is currently at the beginning of a nasty investigation regarding firing an exbrother-in-law (or some-such). Will be very distracting. FWIW, my guess is she will end up fine from the investigation, but there’s no conclusion yet. Achance would no more about this one.

  2. KBH. No. She’s a zip as a US Senator, and if she wasn’t a woman wouldn’t be considered for dog catcher.

  3. Miller. No. No name recognition, total unknown on the national stage. See GHWB’s VP nominee for a comparison.

  4. Rice. When Hell freezes over. Pro-choice. Absolutely lousy job at State, arguably worse than Powell. Never been elected to anything. She should be Commissioner of the NFL.

While we’re at it…

Fioria. Absolutely not. Spectacular failure at HP, would get eaten for a light lunch in DC.

Capito and Emerson. See Miller.

Bottom line, none competent or ready for prime time. Plus, not a one will sway a single Hillary voter. They’ll be voting against BO, not “for” any form of Republican.

I prefer elected officials

dld1717 (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 10:00PM EST (link)

You are right I forgot both but I really prefer McCain choose someone who has a open record on many of key issues that are happening right now and someone who has been tried and tested in a campaign race.

Neither one of those mentioned have records on many issues that are happening today and they may be labeled part of CEO wing which may turn many blue collar union workers in MidWest off

Linda Chavez

Michael Sabetta (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 10:01PM EST (link)

I like all of the names you suggested, and I think picking a woman would be a smart move. However, your suggestions do not take into account the changing demographics in this country. The percentage of women is not changing. The ethnic makeup of this country is changing. It is my opinion that this is the time for John McCain to make a bold move that will reward the Republican Party for years to come. I was worried that Obama would beat us to the punch. Since he didn’t, it opens the door for McCain to take the ball and run with it. And, Linda Chavez was born in the U.S. (I checked)

Glad you brought this up...

tommer (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 10:15PM EST (link)

…because it seems you’re thinking like Dick Morris. And as much as I don’t like so-called “identity politics,” I also don’t like the thought of losing this election to arguably the most dangerous man ever to be nominated by a major party. And I likewise think a female GOP veep nominee could play to the alienation of a great many Hillary supporters, with happy results for “the good guys,” if you’ll pardon the expression.

I have heard many good things about Gov Palin, but recently there has been some dust-up involving the firing of her sister’s ex that makes me nervous, given the biases of the MSM. I would welcome any help on this matter.

Sec Rice has proven to be an incompetent Secretary of State, so “no, thanks” to the idea of her moving up to Vice-President.

Rep Miller is a good suggestion. Could I add Rep Blackburn of Tennessee? I could live with Sen Hutchison if I had to do so, because her pro-choice-ness is very limited. I think she actually has a good score from the NRLC.

Chavez

dld1717 (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 10:17PM EST (link)

Linda Chavez could not be confirmed by US Senate cause she was too controversial. That would be bad choice; plus all her writing over years could be field day for Dems

Congresswoman McMorris/ Wilson

dld1717 (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 10:21PM EST (link)

Congresswoman Wilson of NM would of been a fabulous pick but her recent loss, her being from NM (right next door to AZ) and her dust up in firing of US Attorney General could be real negative

Congresswoman McMorris of Washingon State probably same as Emerson and Capito plus I do not see Washington state going for McCain

A liberal Republican

nogyro35 (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 10:25PM EST (link)

“They’ll be voting against BO, not “for” any form of Republican.”

If McCain selects a liberal/pro-choice republican woman, then maybe these angry Hillary supporters might vote Republican come election day.

Otherwise they’ll join Obama in RELENTLESSLY attacking Palin, KBH, Miller, Rice , etc. They cannot have any successful conservatives, especially if they are a woman or minority.

I am hoping for Palin.

shadowtax (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 10:33PM EST (link)

I hope that Governor Palin gets the VP nod because I believe that the only way that she would accept is if McCain switched his position on ANWR.

Her gender is relevant but secondary to her association with the energy issue which is a big winner for Republicans. She is also solidly conservative.

I admit that I am ignorant of any scandal involving a relative. I would appreciate more information.

Somehow I believe that Governor Palin could make this campaign more fresh and exciting.

Pick a liberal, pro-choice woman

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 10:38PM EST (link)

and for every HRC supporter you pick up, you lose five Republicans.

Experience

dld1717 (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 10:39PM EST (link)

What experience does Pallin have? She is in her first term as Governor and she has zero foreign policy experience and she does not add any zip to campaign. Plus, she reminds me off a librarian.

I can so see Obaam aligning her with Ted Stevens and many of recent scandals in Alaska no matter ho wrong

I do not get love for her here?

Candice Miller Has Great Name Rec..

IR_MN Sunday, August 24th at 10:51PM EST (link)

In Michigan. She won re-election in 98 by one of the largest landslides in MI history. She won every country. Her current congressional district is somewhat of a swing district. McCain needs to try and win Oakland/Macomb counties if he wants to win MI. Miller can do that. If McCain wants to pick someone just to win one state, Miller is probably the best female VP candidate.

McCain Needs Pick Someone if

dld1717 (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 10:57PM EST (link)

McCain is going to have to pick someone who voters feel could step into shoes of President. They do need some economy expertise but they need to have a grasp of foreign policy.

We’ve had this discussion too many times but not once have you shown me a single case study or article that has shown the Compaq merger to be a failure.

Show me one, just one, and I’ll be able to finally understand your view.

More experience than Obama

shadowtax (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 11:01PM EST (link)

She has experience in local Alaska politics serving as mayor and as President of the Alaska Oil and Gas Ethics Commission. She made her political career by fighting corruption. She challenged and defeated an incumbent GOP governor.

McCain has all of the experience the ticket needs. Amazingly, Palin has more executive experience than Senator Obama! Barack Obama has a local political background but accomplished nothing. When comparing McCain-Palin to Obama-Biden it becomes painfully obvious that the Democrat ticket is upside-down.

Most of the country knows little about Governor Palin. Attention to her will necessarily call attention to the energy issue. And energy independence is the winning issue.

Agreed

StevenK (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 11:25PM EST (link)

Especially so McCain can stress the point that neither Obama or Biden have ever worked an everyday job their entire life.

Biden openly admits he’s never had a boss in his life.

The problem is that McCain really doesn’t have much private sector experience either, so picking a Vice President who’s served as CEO of a major global company to overcompensate.

If you're going to worship her, shadowfax,

Achance (Diary) Sunday, August 24th at 11:29PM EST (link)

you should at least know a little about her lest you be thought an acolyte like all the Obamites.

She was mayor of Wasilla, AK, a bedroom community of Anchorage. I don’t know the population, but at most a few tens of thousands. She was Chairperson of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, one of the better paid appointments in the Alaska government the qualifications for which are “I know the Governor.” The AOGCC actually has a pretty important job, albeit rarely done, but when it is done, it is done by the Commission’s professional staff.

Gov. Palin is a masterful politician, but in Alaska, the greatest success is to be had by standing in the right place when something good happens. Sarah Palin was standing there when Randy Ruedrich, Republican Party Chair and a fellow Commissioner, did something stupid, whereupon she became every Democrat’s favorite Republican. She was standing there as Frank Murkowski committed political suicide – several times. And she was standing there when the People decided that the eight years we’d had of Tony Knowles were more than enough. She’s got that lucky stuff down.

In Vino Veritas

I have read her bio.

shadowtax (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 12:17AM EST (link)

No worship here. I just think she’s a winner. I am all for luck. The GOP needs it this year.

Your points do not dispute that her experience is greater than Senator Obama. Indeed, by your account she is a mirror image of Obama. His rapid rise was aided by considerable luck. Perhaps her popularity bubble holds until Election Day.

In my view her principle value is her association with the energy issue. I want to hear these words in Minneapolis, “My friends, after extensive investigation and consultations especially with Alaskan Governor Palin, I have concluded that America can safely and cleanly extract oil from the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge.”

And I am not a horse. :)

Palin's totally unqualified....

nod90 (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 12:31AM EST (link)

…and picking her would be the worst kind of identity politics. She needs some time to learn what she is doing.

The only woman who is qualified is Rice and it seems that she would upset a lot of conservatives.

Have you considered Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)?

Martin Knight (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 12:50AM EST (link)

Though I must confess that my ideal ticket would have been Mitt Romney/Peter Pace – satisfying both the Economy and National Security at the same time.

The added advantage is that Pace would have shored up Romney’s social conservative bona fides.

I'll defend her against that.

Achance (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 12:52AM EST (link)

I’m not her greatest fan, but as I did when she ran for governor, I’d support her.

She’s as or more qualified than anybody who’s spent their life in government. She and her husband have actually had real jobs, unlike anyone on the D side, and even unlike McCain. Being an officer and a gentleman, the son of an officer and a gentleman, isn’t exactly the common American experience. And I’m not saying that to disparage; I think the tradition of military families is a good thing, but it is its own experience, not exactly Joe Sixpack’s experience.

The Presidency hasn’t been kind to either intellectuals or the very experinced in government sort. Carter was an intellectual and a failure. WJC was pretty much an intellectual and a scumbag. The guy or woman who somehow finds that leadership quality that gets people to follow them is the one that history remembers. History doesn’t much seem to check CVs.

Conservatives upset if Rice is VP pick. Certainly not...

civil truth (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 1:00AM EST (link)

You’ll just get to see what it looks like when conservatives all run for the exits at the same time.

Not a pretty sight…

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

Palin would have to debate Biden.

nod90 (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 1:12AM EST (link)

I’m no fan of Biden but he is quite good in a debate especially when the subject is foreign policy. The learning curve that Palin would have to climb on foreign and defense issues is far too steep.

Given time and the right experience Palin could be a formidable contender, but not in 2008. I’d like to see her get re-elected as Governor first.

Fortunately there is no need for a risky VP pick.

nod90 (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 1:23AM EST (link)

Why change the game when it is working? Obama is sinking in the polls. There’s still a few months to finish the job. And experts tell us that the VP doesn’t make much difference anyway.

If there isn’t a safe woman VP pick, then we can get by with a man.

Re: Palin

cdm (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 3:11AM EST (link)

Palin is a bright reformer who gave up a plum political appointment to protest the corruption that was occuring in the governmant,

in regards to the scandal, she fired the Commisioner of Public Safety (he had prepared a report that was intended for public release that undermined some of her policy initiatives – I don’t know how they do things in Alaska, but down here if you want to do that to your boss publically, you better staple your letter of resignation to the cover). After he was dismissed, he claimed that he was fired because he refused to fire her ex-brother in law, and that he had been recieving pressure from her staff and the “First Dude”.

Facts:

1) Palin’s sister went through a meesy divorce.
2) The divorce included allegations of violence.
3) The Family Court concluded that Palin’s brother in law used a taser on his 11 year old step son.
3) There were allegations that Palin’s brother in law threatened the Governors family.
4) The Governors Security Chief was concerned enough to advise/instruct the First Gentleman to discuss threats with the Commisioner of Public Safety.
5) Other staff members discussed threats with Commisioner of Public Safety, including why former brother in law was still employed as Trooper.
6) While not illeagal, some of those staff members may have been speaking outside their portfolio.

Palin is an extremely quick study, has phenomenal people skills, and woudl be invaluable in a debate about energy. Readers of the Calculated Risk blog will know about the global discussion in regards to de coupling (the idea that the US economy can go down while others continue to go up, which increases markets for US goods), that appears less and less likely. One of the main culprits: high energy costs.

Also, we need to make the connection between high energy costs, and other high costs (ie milk is over $4.00 per gallon). Who better to make that arguement than a mother?

Her opponents underestimate her at their peril.

One other plus – poll after poll shows that the undecideds are women between 35 and 50. They have some college education, and they have dependents, or are worried about dependents (parents/relatives who are aging). While Palin does not give McCain an electoral presence (change a blue state to red), she does have the ability to speak to that group.

The one drawback: the questions of inpropriety in the above mentioned investigation – which will end in her favor, but probably not until after election day.

Extremely informative!

SirGladiator (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 5:08AM EST (link)

Thanks for that fantastic post, choc full of useful information. It really makes it clear that Governor Palin is the best choice for VP.

I was just watching Speaker Pelosi earlier tonight on a replay of Meet the Press, and she was saying how all the drilling that McCain wants to do would only lower the cost of gas by ‘two cents’, I mean her comments were just comicly stupid, but it reminds us that energy and drilling are going to be a HUGE issue this fall, at leas they’d BETTER be if McCain wants to win. And there isnt anybody in America who can carry the ball better on that issue for McCain than the Governor of Alaska, her first-hand knowledge of ANWR and the whole drilling issue will be of immense value in this campaign. Also once he picks her he will have the cover he needs to change his position on ANWR, something he definitely needs to do.

One other relatively minor consideration, not as important as the other points, but about a week or so ago there was a poll showing Obama ahead by 5 points in Alaska. Granted all the older polls show McCain with the lead so maybe it was just an outlier, but that Ted Stevens scandal no doubt hurt the overall Republican brand even further than its already been. Palin’s presence on the ticket should ensure that Alaska’s electoral votes, the few that there are, remain in McCain’s column.

HP Q3 Sales, Profit Beat, Forecast Ahead of Estimates

Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) reported revenue for its fiscal third quarter ended July 31 of $28 billion, with non-GAAP profits of 86 cents a share, ahead of analysts’ average estimate of $27.4 billion and 83 cents. . . . The company said its personal systems group’s revenue rose 15%, year-over-year, as computer shipments rose 20%, largely thanks to notebook computer shipment increase of 26%.

Most of this can be attributed to Hurd and the changes he made.

Your informative facts about Governor Palin has me even MORE convinced that she is the person for the VP pick. Her strong stand on energy & drilling is one of her biggest assets, and her reputation of FIGHTING corruption — in BOTH parties — what made her mark, as she rose in Alaskan politics. I hear her approval ratings there are something like 80%!!

http://news.cnet.com/Why-dis-Fiorina/2010-1042_3-5217314.html?tag=st.nl

Fiorina was unpopular because she was the first foreigner to lead HP and she implemented a radical transformation of the company. However, against odds, she made it work. Unfortunately, the benefits of the merger took longer than expected to reveal itself and Fiorina lost her job because of it.

However, if you look at the numbers JamesLBurns provided, its impossible to say that Fiorina’s tenure hasn’t been vindicated every day after HP started posting profits.
