But unlike the AGW nuts, the birthers could be silenced in an instant
RedBeard Monday, February 8th at 8:12AM EST (link)It’s completely within Obama’s control. I’m sure he will be releasing his birth, medical, and educational records any moment now, in order to put all his conspiratorialist critics in their places.
Any moment.
Waiting with bated breath.
Now would be a great time.

No, those kooks will never be silenced
Neil Stevens (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 8:16AM EST (link)Obama has shown the proof several times, and every time the birfers just plug their ears and say “La la la la lala.”

But don't you know? That's not the 'real' birth certificate.
Brian Hibbert (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 8:26AM EST (link)The ‘real’ birth certificate will prove that he was born in Saudi Arabia or Communist China or somewhere that invalidates his election.
The burthers for the most part ARE the truthers. They believe in the Builderbergers and the TriLateral Commission and the grassy knoll other things that are mysteriously pulling strings to make bad things happen. For some reason they don’t want to believe that things can have explanations that don’t involve conspiracies.
I don’t know why.

Obama is the President and that’s that. Perhaps, if we get enough good conservatives into state and federal offices we can adjust the rules so that this issue doesn’t rear its ugly head again. That said, those who live the conspiracy theory lifestyle will surely find one regardless…

Why should he?
mbecker908 (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 8:17AM EST (link)They give him the ability to point a finger at a bunch of absolutely looney-tunes (sorry Bugs & Friends) nut cases who have absolutely no understanding of politics and no sense of priorities and say “See, the opposition doesn’t care about the critical issues facing the country…”
And he’s right.
They are damaging our ability to address issues where we can beat Obama like a drum. They really need to go back in their caves and just STFU.
Why should he?
RedBeard Monday, February 8th at 8:43AM EST (link)Easy answer: To completely destroy the kooks. If he produced all his records, the birthers and others like them would be instantly neutered. Obama would have a magnificent opportunity to destroy a group of his enemies and at the same time use that as political fuel to boost his sagging poll numbers.
There seems little doubt that he was born where he says he was born. The State of Hawaii has already gone on record confirming his birth there. The idea that he was born elsewhere seems ludicrous.
Which then raises the obvious question of why he refuses. The only conclusion that makes any sense whatever is that he’s hiding other things which might prove embarrassing to him.
It’s really a shame that the perfect storm of birther nuts and unquestioning Obamedia lackeys works to set up conditions under which we may never know the whole story.

No argument with any of those three things
RedBeard Monday, February 8th at 9:03AM EST (link)As I said earlier, to think he was born elsewhere seems ludicrous.
I understand the train of thought that says the birther nuts actually help Obama, but I can’t subscribe to that. As long as there is room for them to function, there will be some nagging doubts.
It seems to me that he would have a substantial net gain in perception among the people if he would destroy the conspiracy theories. The sympathies would be with him, as he rose above the fray wrapped in a glow of innocence after proving he had been wrongly accused and maligned.

Neil Stevens (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 9:04AM EST (link)He’s shown as much as I could show to prove native born citizenship. More actually because I don’t know that there’s a birth announcement in a newspaper for me.

They are not stupid.
Christine (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 8:53AM EST (link)They know the “kooks” aren’t his enemy. They are the enemy of the right and the friend of the left. So long as birthers and other conspiracy theorists who can be tied to the right are given airtime and any crumb of legitimacy, the right suffers, and Obama smiles.

The 'Birthers' aren't 'damaging'
jakee308 Monday, February 8th at 8:42AM EST (link)The ‘Birthers’ aren’t ‘damaging’anyone.
If they didn’t exist, do you really believe that the MSM would allow an undiluted and correctly quoted statement by a conservative on the errors and misjudgments of Obama to be printed/aired?
Me neither.
The birthers are not damaging anyone’s ability to present the facts. The MSM is damaging/obfuscating the People’s perception of the truth of our economic and political situation. (although with time they have begun to catch on).
Better to blame the true source of the lies and distortions being spread to those who are unable or unwilling to search for the facts than to moan and wail about those the MSM spotlights as representative of a political movement.
The truth will out. Scot Brown is proof of that.
Repeat and promote the truth and eventually rational people will see it for what it is just as they see the ‘birthers’ and the Left for what they are.

I just wish they would stop.
Danielle Davis (ocleverone) (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 8:50AM EST (link)The whole thing is nonsense. Perhaps I am Pollyanna but this whole birth certificate thing assumes that every person that has had access to the records (or lack thereof) has no integrity with respect to upholding the Constitution. Not one has come forward, not one has said “Yeah, I know the truth and they just filed his certificate when he got back”. They are all in the tank for Obama regardless of the ramifications. It’s ridiculous. A very high order conspiracy theory.
Personally I think there is a blank on his birth certificate which would pretty much invalidate his “Dreams of My Father” hooie.
The college records probably show grades that were less than stellar. And again, it assumes EVERYONE that can/could access those records are all in the tank for Obama without one person having the fortitude to stand up and say “this is wrong”.
If the birth certificate people want to be truly effective, they would be pounding their elected reps to ensure that ALL presidential candidates are vetted prior to the election.

You hit the nail on the head.
kyoufuu (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 9:19AM EST (link)The truth is always more mundane than what’s believed in the conspiracy. Birtherism, trutherism, triggerism, warmerism. It’s all the same. Come up with an elaborate explanation to explain something simple. It’s a failure to accept the validity of Occam’s razor. And I’m saying all of this as a guy who thought the birth certificate issue was important at one point!
Obama is more defeatable on the issues than he is on the technicalities of his life.
His college records would probably just indicate that he failed basket weaving three times. Or something like that.

Agree with your assessment of conspiratorialism
RedBeard Monday, February 8th at 9:29AM EST (link)But in addition to beating Obama on the issues, a part of me would greatly enjoy seeing him embarrassed by the failure in Basketweaving 101.
Anything that helps remove the glow in which his lackeys still bathe him, or which knocks his halo sideways, can only help reduce the damage he is doing to this republic.

Heh. I was just gonna post exactly the same thing.
Bill S (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 9:41AM EST (link)But the other point that Neil makes is exactly what is going on – the birthers are a distraction. The media would rather pay attention to the right-wing fringe nuts (and try to paint us ALL to look like that) rather than focusing on the problems/issues that show their Leftist buddies to be just as bad as the birthers.

Missing the Point of the real movement
JHancock (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 2:12PM EST (link)While there are some less-educated “Birthers” who still maintain that Obama was born in Kenya, this is no longer the substance of the 20-something lawsuits filed against Obama’s legitimacy. The lawyers filing these suits are not asserting that Obama isn’t American, but rather that he isn’t a “Natural Born American Citizen”. To be a natural born American in the strictest since means being born with single American citizenship to parents who are both American Citizens.
So essentially, few “Birthers” really believe Obama is some foreign plot, but rather see that, from a pragmatic stance, a far left President could be removed from office with a legal technicality, effectively breaking the back of the progressive movement.
And for you neigh-sayers, I just finished a class in law, (and remember these 20 suits are being brought by lawyers) and there is a legitimate question of law here-at least in the technicalities
1) A NATURAL born citizen is not a dual citizen-Obama may have technically had dual citizenship as a child.
2) A NATURAL born citizen has both parents as citizens (in the strictest since)-the realities of single parenthood has likely loosened this requirement-but Obama’s father was not a citizen so it is possible Obama could get caught by this one.
3) A NATURAL born citizen has retained their citizenship. To go to school in Indonesia Obama’s parents may have given up his claims to American citizenship.
So “Birthers”, or at least the lawyers behind this movement, are not trying to stop a foreign plot, but rather find legal reasons for eliminating a Far-Left threat. Incidentally, this is likely why these many technicalities are built into the constitution-to slow importation of foreign political ideas and ensure the president’s only loyalty is to American citizens, and not to “Citizens of the World”
sense, not since. nt

JHancock (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 2:23PM EST (link)I oppose “Birtherism” at this point in time. Obama has shown himself to be far more inept, and thus less of a threat to Capitalist and Constructionalist conservative ideals than we feared. At this point he is looking like a one term president. However, keeping the lawsuits on the back burner may be a good idea if he is looking better by 2012-after all there has been legal president for removing a candidate from the ballot based on ineligibility.
