Actually Toby,

I think everybody there has a BS degree, it just doesn’t stand for Bachelor of Science.

And you know what PhD stands for, of course?

Piled Higher and Deeper

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

Clearly, money and ideology played huge roles in this cluster-. I’d like to add another contributing force: the “top” climate scientists suck at science but excel at politics/advocacy. If accurate science was the driving force behind their rise to “leadership” roles, those such as Phil Jones and Michael Mann would never be where they are in the climate “science” hierarchy.

That picture, Sir,.....quite disturbing!....NT

Utter stupidity

michigan Friday, December 4th at 11:48AM EST (link)

for them not to have archived their data. Haven’t they heard of Carbonite, thumb drives, external drives, CD’s, teams of scribes?!!!! Unless……..they didn’t want to……….OMG!!!!

I concur that it is utter stupidity that they threw away the data.

The_Gadfly (Diary) Friday, December 4th at 3:53PM EST (link)

But I expect our side of the debate to be well informed about the fundamentals of this debate, and your post indicates some major holes.

While the focus of the current inquiry seems to be on a small number of files that were once available for public download, keeping all of the raw data for the temperature data is actually a daunting task. I have a friend who works on making the raw data from some satellites availble to universities. If the drive array with which he is working isn’t at least a couple of Terabytes in size, it isn’t worth the 20 seconds of configuration time for him to attach to it. External drives, CDs, and Carbonite aren’t going to cut it for that kind of data archiving. But to me, that makes it all the more damning that they deleted the data. The kind of data archiving in which they needed to engage requires well thought out, consistent, automatic plans on a grand scale. To proceed without an adequate plan, particularly when gathering that data is part of their mission statement, is itself criminal.

Even more telling is the data manipulation...re: tree ring proxies

including the dtate up to the point that it supports your theory and then substituting a different dataset when tree ring data stops proving your theorem is more than a “trick” it is outright fraud. This from their own programming note.

Agreed. And it's not like climate science has been lacking for funding

Provenance n.

1) Place of origin; derivation.

2)
    a) The history of the ownership of an object, especially when documented or authenticated. Used of artworks, antiques, and books.

    b) The records or documents authenticating such an object or the history of its ownership.

Now, if we’re talking about the clues to the <Sarc> destruction of the earth<\Sarc>, wouldn’t you take great care of that data?

If doom is that likely, where was the organization of the climate research scientific community to be sure that the data and the conditions of collection were kept for future study?

Mayberry Judge:
“So let me get this straight…you left the crucial evidence under the care of Barney Fife, and he threw it away?

Phil Jones:
“Yep”

Just checked with my and he said his data sizes shouldn't apply to CRU.

The_Gadfly (Diary) Saturday, December 5th at 11:09PM EST (link)

He also gets data from buoys and that data set is considerably smaller. He works mostly with ocean data not land sites, but imagines the data sets ought to be similar. He estimates his buoy data would be about 5M uncompressed for an enitre year. At those data densities, CDs would be more than sufficient for backup.

Time for jail

archer52 Friday, December 4th at 12:46PM EST (link)

it won’t happen today, but someday a government is going to hold these men responsible for the trillions of dollars wasted by following their lies. Their scam makes Madoff go “Darn, climate! CLIMATE!! Why didn’t I think of that!”

Notice nobody has heard from Gore who is probably at home saying to his wife. “Honey, where the account book for our offshore accounts? We may need to take a vacation for a little bit, until all this cools down!”

It can't cool down

THE JOB SUM(MIT) OF ALL FEARS

reelman (Diary) Friday, December 4th at 4:15PM EST (link)

Its bad when any president ignores economic laws and history. Its worse when a president lives in an imaginary country where up is down. Obama has no clue about jobs, no common sense awareness that gov-meant is the problem or even can be the problem.
It matters not that the jobless rate doubles and the national debt quadruples. The socialists believe only in socialism, never in free market capitalism. Its blinders and earplugs 24-7.
Rest assured the voters know a lot more about economics than the Obama administration of arrogant Oz Land secular socialists.
Recall the historical democrat leadership “3 step plan”:
1…Wild vote-buying overspending (2009)…2…Tax hikes galore to cover the spending (expect 2010)…3…Inflation out the wazoo…
democrat J. Carter Obama is well on his way in merely 11 months.
(Step 3 crushes the poor…democrats always end up hurting their faithful sheep time after time)
The scourging of America has only begun…we had that with democrat Carter and should have known better.

A job summit with teachers and union heads?

redpens (Diary) Friday, December 4th at 11:55PM EST (link)

Is that right? What do they know about creating jobs? They only know how to kill jobs. The same goes for the Gang Green jobs morons too.
