The final 3 weeks of the Obama Presidency

For those of you that follow me on Twitter (@dave_in_fla), you may have noticed a few snide tweets over the last few weeks about how stupid Obama was to spend his political capital on the stimulus bill. My point (which is difficult to convey in 140 characters) is that all administrations have only so much political capital, and they have to use it while they’ve got it. George W. Bush understood this well, which is why he used his on five major initiatives, education, Medicare Part D, tax cuts, Afghanistan and Iraq. Note that Bush also tried to use it after the 2004 election to enact Social Security reform, but failed by over reaching toward a shift toward privatization.

Once political capital is gone, it is gone. You can’t get it back unless you win an election, or have a significant event provide you authority to act (such as 9/11 did for Bush). And without that capital, you are unable to enact sweeping structural changes through legislative action. Instead, you have to develop a strong bi-partisan consensus to make changes, something difficult to do when congressional leadership is named Pelosi and Reid.

The next 3 weeks are critical in the Obama Presidency, and mark the final 3 weeks of his first term as measured by major legislative initiatives. If Healthcare is the defining measure of his presidency, then he has made two significant mistakes along the way that are forcing him to achieve success in a short period, or lose.

First, he spent an huge amount of capital on passage of the $797B stimulus package, without becoming personally involved in the details of the legislation. This is unfortunately a hallmark of his personal style. He is disinterested in details, as can be traced back to his short tenure in the Senate. He allowed Congress to draft the package, without any guidance other than “make it big”. Congress of course does what it is good at, and used it as a giant earmark package, funding every pet project they had on the table. The end result was a giant package, which Obama made bold claims about, which have produced no visible benefits to the voters in the last 6 months.

Now the passage of the stimulus was not in and of itself a problem for Obama. If he had been ready to push forward with a healthcare overhaul immediately after the stimulus passed, he could have gotten what he wants. However, he was hindered by his two personal foibles; arrogance and laziness. He wasn’t willing to take direct action to craft legislation that he could use to guide a quick effort through Congress, instead he fell back on “conscienceness raising seminars” with breakout sessions that are universally used in business to give the appearance of action without actually doing anything. Second, he arrogantly believes in his own personal popularity to the point that he thinks that he will always have a 65%+ approval rating, just cause he is so freaking awesome.

So time went by, and the economy got worse. He allowed 5 months to pass, with mounting unemployment eroding his core support with the voters. It really is irrelevant whether or not his actions are hindering recovery. Laid off employees, their families, and their friends, are going to blame him for their problems, no matter how much he tries to blame Bush. If you track the Rasmussen approval index, there is strong negative correlation between the increase in unemployment and the decrease in the index. He is currently hovering around a -8 on the index, which dropped from around -1 when the June unemployment numbers were announced.

The second critical mistake was Cap and Trade. Obama tried to sneak this one through Congress when they did a vote count and realized they had enough to get it through the House. He gambled that once through the House it could quickly head to the Senate and get approved. This turned out to be a huge mistake, because it provided a rallying cry to opposition that was already disaffected by the lack of results on the economy. Congress was stunned by the level of opposition, and is still reeling from the effects as they go home to their districts and hear from constituents. The Senate wisely noted the firestorm and has tabled the measure until after the August recess. Cap and Trade is now in legislative limbo and will live and die based on the outcome of healthcare.

This brings us to today. Obama squandered his political capital on the stimulus, and activated vocal opposition during Cap and Trade. He now has 3 weeks to try and bully Congress into passing a version of Healthcare that he can claim as his own. The question is will a version without a public option be considered a legislative victory, or a defeat for the administration? It is unlikely, given the current environment, that he can get a package with a public option passed before the August recess. But if he doesn’t get something passed before then, the clock will have expired and the game will be over. His personal approval will have dropped below 50% like the approval of his policies already have. His political capital will have been spent. Both cap and trade, and healthcare will be dead legislatively, and he will be forced to deal with the economic mess as the new fiscal year begins.

Obama is facing the end of his presidency, as he knows it. He must win on healthcare in the next 3 weeks, or become effectively a lameduck.

Brilliant Dave, but a tad too optimistic

red_oakster (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 11:22AM EST (link)

Even if there’s no Senate bill before the August recess, Obama will keep after it in the fall and the spring. Clinton pursued health care all the way until late summer 94- i.e. until it was time for full-time campaigning in 1994. Republicans will not walk away from the table and neither will Democrats, so conservatives need to remain vigilant.

That said, the high probability of sustained 8%-plus unemployment will make Obama’s big government programs an increasing political negative for him and his legislative program.

One final point. Big legislation like tax cuts or Medicare gets made with the active cooperation of moderates from the other side. Obama has tried to create liberal majority legislation. He’s an ideologue much more than a pragmatist,. If his agenda stalls (my fervent hope), it will be because he failed to build a centrist coalition.

I'm not claiming he won't try

Dave_in_Fla (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 11:36AM EST (link)

He may in fact manage to get a bill through congress. But this bill, with it’s liberal overreach has 3 weeks to live. It either passes, with a public option, or Obama’s future chances for legislative success are permanently snuffed out.

By Sept 1st, the negatives against the bill will be too great to allow its passage. If it dies, so does cap and trade.

I do think some of the tax increases will finally get passed though, but they will be redirected toward managing the deficit, not healthcare.

By a 'lame duck', do you mean a man and his people in power who are about to shred The Constitution ?

Kenny Solomon (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 11:24AM EST (link)

Do not underestimate evil when it is right in front of you……and yes, I’m calling them evil. How else would you describe these people and their goals ?

This is no longer about politics as practiced to date.

There is a hard shift in direction coming in this country that during one overnight could easily and permanently alter the landscape of Rights, individual freedom and everything you see and know as normal.

I know many people here at RS think I’m crazy, but it’s all like a clear vision to me – a storm is on the horizon and when the first ‘whatever’ man-made disaster or natural occurrence hits (hurricane, earthquake, etc), the rest of the multitude of evil will cascade at once like a multi-part tsunami.

The jump-off point may not even happen within our nation’s borders.

One of the only things they haven’t started to do yet is knocing down doors at ‘zero-dark-thirty’ and making dissent disappear. I guess that’s because the civilian volunteer corps (comprised of ACORN, New Black Panthers, Nation Of Islam and Move On) and the camps aren’t ready yet.

Y’all still think we’re guaranteed to have an election in November 2010 ?

Never let a good crisis go to waste.

And again, if you think I’m calling for a violent uprising, you’re dead wrong.

Well, I think jackbooted thugs are a little far fetched

Dave_in_Fla (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 11:40AM EST (link)

But if something like that were to happen, then it would be proving my point. Without political capital, Obama would be taking an alternative means for instituting his agenda. There are certainly enough examples in history where such actions were taken by leaders who were told “no” by their legislatures or courts.

Looks like one occurring in Honduras as we speak.

I think the socialist agenda/control too far goes on a lot more specifically with some forms of public assistance, subsidized daycare, medicaid or health department programs, head start and in school programs. I’ve posted before about all the testing and screening and labeling they like to do. Look at that bill with the expanding of his volunteer groups how many times early childhood was mentioned. I think we should concerned about what is in those consent forms at the welfare office first. All this stuff they do with the poor they use later to apply it to everyone.

mom2oneson (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 12:15PM EST (link)

even if they didn’t apply it everyone else, we still should be concerned about it just because they are fellow citizens and what they do is too far into people’s lives. I was trying to say that is a current thing that thugs are doing vs them showing up in the middle of the night.

I'll wager you any amount of money on the 2010 election

Neil Stevens (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 11:43AM EST (link)

I really think you need to take a deep breath, step back, and re-think some of what you’ve been posting.

Because frankly it was Looney Tunes when the left said it about Bush, and it’s Looney Tunes when you say it about Obama.

Achance (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 12:03PM EST (link)

Really depends on how well they do with their agenda and how far they can push the re-apportionment to make the Red states powerless. I’ve seen what “social democracy” looks like in union elections. With those people firmly in charge and the opposition rendered silent or irrelevant, why would there be more than one name on the official ballot for each office?

OK, a step back.....

Kenny Solomon (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 12:15PM EST (link)

Deep breath….. Decaf coffee….. Watch the breeze awhile.

Neil (and everyone), I mean what I say and I say what I mean. If you think I’m over the line, then have Moe hit me with the blam stick.

Obama said he was going to “remake America”. Not rebuild, enhance, adjust……but “remake”.

So far, ‘change’ has come to our national security parameters (terrorist incarceration, interrogation and trial setup), the national financial system (government takeover of banks and institutions), defense materiel spending, on his own’ agreed to a nuke arms treaty amendment with another nation, assumed ownership of 1/3 of the nation’s auto industry and has pending legislation that will take our energy and healthcare policies through a 180 degree turn to at best a Socialist nightmare.

The two big things they haven’t gone after are the media and education, mainly because the overwhelming majority of both of those two sectors are on their side already.

All that in 7 months without the outside influence of man-caused disasters on our soil.

My main prayer is that Obama fails miserably and as publically as possible, then somehow, some way is shamed into resigning (fat chance of that).

The problem we have is God forbid somebody or some group does something stupid and tries to take out people or hit a building, then all bets are off on what will go on here.

You're not going to get banned for this

Neil Stevens (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 12:17PM EST (link)

But if you keep pushing the “Obama’s going to cancel all elections” theory, then I’m going to treat you the same way I treated the leftists who pushed the “Bush’s going to cancel all elections” theory: With lots and lots of mockery.

It’s crazy. It’s just crazy. It diminishes your reputation to keep saying it.

Neil, there was absolutely no reason at all for the

janis (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 12:40PM EST (link)

lefttys to claim what they did about George W. Bush, other than that was what they would do if they had the power. Well now they do. Obama is getting lots of heat from his pet leftys to just get the job done no matter what it takes or what it costs. George Bush didn’t have groups of Black Panther wannabes at the polling places threatening voters, but Obama did. And those same thugs got off scot-free for their actions.

So when someone on our side makes these same claims, it’s not without reason. Bush never supported thugs and dictators like Chavez or those in Iran. George Bush was and is an American by birth, by tradition, by temperament and belief. Obama may have been raised more or less in America, but his beliefs about this country are anything but American. He’s kicked over one tradition after another, one Constitutional rule or law after another without batting an eyelid. What makes you think he’d stop pushing for power no matter what it cost us as a free people?

We do have to remember that if Obama is a half black American,

Tbone (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 12:56PM EST (link)

he is also a half white Kenyan.

Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.

Exactly...

Stephen Halsey (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 12:57PM EST (link)

History is littered with examples of the Left using intimidation, thuggery and worse to carry out and fulfill their agenda in countless places around the world. I honestly can’t think of a time when the Right has done that. (And let’s not called Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy the ‘Right’ like the moonbats like to because they were as Leftist as the next…).

I, too, have similar concerns as Kenny’s….maybe not as open or vocal about them (at least here at RedState) but I agree totally that we’re in a completely different time right now….seeing things happen in this country that I personally thought we’d never see (defacto nationalization of the banking industry and car industry, crazy un-read legislation, brazen disregard for national defense and the Constitution, intimidating states and individuals, etc…..).

I just think we need to be vigiliant in our opposition. Continuing calling and emailing our congresscritters. Attend tea parties…..and be prepared for anything that might come our way. Based on the way Obama was raised, who he chose to associate with growing up, and how he and his minions ran his campaign, these people are serious about ‘remaking’ this country and serious about their ‘change’. I fully expect them to use every means at their disposal to carry out their agenda and consolidate power. And maybe, just maybe, if we can slow walk crap-and-tax and health care to their death, we can survive this mess and make Barry a lameduck by Christmas.

Hit hard. Hit fast. Hit often.

Jonah Goldberg convincingly lays out the case in Liberal Fascism that the left is historically and ideologically tied to fascism. Tying the right to fascists (the illogic behind the left’s fearmongering during the GWB admin) was the ubersuccessful tactic of the Communists. There is no such correlation in the history OR ideology of the right, so therefore is no moral equivalence or practical equivalence between the demogaguery used against GWB and the real threat of BHO.

Kenny, I don't doubt your belief in this scenario.

janis (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 12:32PM EST (link)

Probably because I have the same sorts of thought about this subject. One of the reasons I can imagine Obama using “his” people to accomplish what he can’t do legislatively is because of his firm support for thugs and dictators the world over. And his true believers in this country would not hesitate to advocate force to achieve their/his goals.

What really provokes me to see revolution or rebellion is the sight of all those Americans in the video that becker posted yesterday who lined the streets for the funeral procession of an American soldier that most of them didn’t know. The American flags, the hands over hearts, the respect shown for a hero—these are not people who are going to just lie down and roll over when a dictator tries to pull a Chavez in this country. These are not people who will let the deaths of their sons, brothers, fathers and sisters in war be so dishonored and wasted.

Achance has predicted much of what you’ve written about, but you have an additional impetus for sounding the alarm about this stuff–you are Jewish and have more than good reason to fear the arc of this kind of political behavior. So can I say it, Kenny?

We’re all JOOOOOOOOOOOs now.

Not predicting, janis, so much as cautioning.

Achance (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 12:48PM EST (link)

I have no doubt about what Comrade Obama and his followers WILL do if allowed to do so. Right now there is no effective opposition at the governmental level. All those people in becker’s video are touching an inspiring but none of them have a political organization or a vote in a legislature or the Congress. The vast majority of them don’t want to think about politics except on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November and won’t until something actually and directly effects them; then it is too late.

What causes me grave concern is the fact that unlike previous ’60s Lefty efforts, i.e., the Clintons, there is little institutional opposition and almost complete silence from the business community, which in a sane world would be howling like banshees and spending untold amounts of money in opposition to all of this administration’s agenda. They have been co-opted or bullied into submission and that really only leaves first peaceful popular uprising, something the right knows little about and only has talk radio to organize and if that fails, more dramatic opposition because it will have been too late to take less stringent measures.

In Vino Veritas

I stand corrected, Achance. Aside from your

janis (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 1:03PM EST (link)

own concerns, I’m praying that there won’t be some large national disaster, like the New Madrid fault letting go, or an outbreak of swine flu that acts as it did in 1918, or a large scale terrorist attack that disrupts daily life over a larger area than New York City and D.C. Should that scenario happen, any of them, I have no doubt that Obama and Co. will seize upon it as a great time to impose martial law indefinitely and then set about disarming us.

Should that happen, then all those flag-waving Americans in the video will be instantly politicized. Yeah, I know there’s no organization for them, nor any leadership at this point, but I don’t think they will just sit back and let it happen. But that’s my hope speaking as well….

With guaranteed media cooperation, they can fake a disaster

Achance (Diary) Monday, July 20th at 1:14PM EST (link)

or “crisis” anytime they want. The unions all have their “virtual” strike plans and that uses the same metdology. There’s not a public sector white collar union in the Country that could hold a strike together more than a few days; they know it and so do the employers. However, if the union announces at 8 AM that it is on strike, by the 6PM news they’ll have the whole citizenry convinced that people are dying and starving and the criminals are all running loose. They do it and they do it with impunity and they can always count on even legitimate Republican governments who are actually in opposition to them folding like a cheap chair. They run these scams in concert with Democrat governments to scare Hell out of the citizenry and give the Democrat politicians cover for the latest giveaway to them.

Anyway, the Ds and their fellow travellers know how to have a crisis, and they’ll have one when they need it.

I hope Obama’s fall is the same magnitude(big) and duration (quick) as his meteoric rock star rise. I hope it is immense and very very painful (politically of course.)

I guess we needed to learn our lesson, once again. There are no shortcuts. We must not get drunk on a candidate passing around shots of utopia during a campaign ever again.

Financial markets seem to follow this often as well. Many rapidly rising financial bubble bursts quickly. I hope the Obama Bubble bursts soon, for the sake of Americans.
