This election is over

We are just waiting to count the votes

It is panic time in the right-wing blogsphere. McCain is tanking in the polls, the economic meltdown has given his campaign another body blow, he has resorted to a gimmick to get out of a debate where Obama was going to destroy him, the country hates this president and all Republicans and will punish them on November 4th. Even Ramesh Ponnuru, who was one of McCain’s biggest supporters during the primary, thinks his campaign is off the rails and his “return to Washington” reduces his chance of winning.

There, have I captured all of your angst and fears, succinctly?

Now, I know I’m going to sound like Gamecock here (without all the crowing), but you all need to get a grip. You have lived in America your entire life, do you fundementally believe that American people are a bunch of mindless robots, taking their marching orders from the media? Every election cycle, we are greeted by headlines in foreign newspapers about how oreney and backwards the American people are. We just aren’t as sophisticated as the Europeans, and we all want to get into our trucks and drive out and cut down a forest.

So in the last few days a rash of polls have come out showing Obama with insurmountable leads, either nationally or in battleground states. Each of those polls makes controversial assumptions about the American voter, is broadly publicized, and then we get a firestorm of lefties coming here to rub our faces in them.

Why?

The fundemental difference between modern liberalism and conservatism is that liberals are driven by emotion, while we use rational thought to analyze a course of action. This is why we are all thinking about the financial bailout, and many of us ready to hold our noses and accept it as necessary, even though we think it is bad policy. Contrast this to the emotional reaction of a liberal to any problem, usually accompanied by shrill cries of “Do something! Show we care!”. Even their politically correct canons, such as “Social Justice”, are meaningless mantras designed to assauge their guilt, rather than improve society.

Fear is a very strong emotion

It is a driving influence for the left’s political class, and their primary motivation for showing up here enmass in attempts to dispirit us. If they truly believed that Obama was leading and this election is “in the can” for them, they wouldn’t bother. They would be out getting high, while playing Grand Theft Auto on the PS/3′s daddy bought them.

But instead they come here. Look at the polls that they are using as evidence that McCain is losing. The ABC poll gives Obama a 9 point lead. This using a demographic breakdown of 44% Democrat, 28% Republican and 28% Independent. The poll is then further modified by purposely including 164 extra African American in the sample size of around 800. So we have a 19.5% boost of voters that will vote for Obama (assuming the 95% black support for Obama). We also increase the party identification for Democrats by 6% over the Rasmussen poll results, while reducing Republican and Independents by 5% and 1% respectively. And with these modifications, Obama is still only able to get a 9 point advantage.

Again, Why?

Why would anyone release such a flawed poll? It is done for the same reason the New York Times jumps on every gaffe, mistake or rumor that comes along regarding McCain or Palin, while conspicuously ignoring the sheer idiocy and shady backgrounds of Obama and Biden. They want to depress YOU, and most importantly they want to influence the voters that they think are less informed and susceptible to influence.

But here is the dirty little secret.

This election is over

Have we the People slipped to the point that we are willing to become a socialist society, with the big government safety net governing our financial future, health care, energy use, free speech and property rights?

Or are our core values still such that we value individual liberty over the soft facism of government with a smile?

If the ABC poll is correct, and Republican are truly a minority party representing slightly over a quarter of the electorate, then we are likely ready for socialism. Get ready to live like England, France and Spain. At least the wine will be good.

But if Rasmussen is right, then the parties are still pretty even, and a strong core of Independents that don’t like being told what to do, will be the ones deciding the election.

My personal belief is that the public uproar over the financial bailout (even if it is actually necessary), and the strong majority that wants the drilling restrictions lifted, are a strong indication that the American spirit of independence and raising the middle finger toward the rest of the world are alive and well. At the end of the day, they aren’t going to vote for a socialist.

But I could be wrong. The point is that it doesn’t matter. We are either a socialist society or we are not. We are going to find out November 4th, but the decision has already been made. We are just waiting for the results.

I Disagree

IJB Thursday, September 25th at 8:34AM EST (link)

Your thesis only works if you assume that voters are, in the aggregate, “rational actors”.

Like investors, voters are, on average, in fact “rational actors”.

But, just as there are with investors, there are bouts of “irrational action” that voters succumb to from time to time. When voters act irrationally… well, that’s when a little known Governor like Bill Clinton getting elected despite an clearly recovering economy.

What we are seeing currently, in the national mood, is a perfect storm of exactly one of those times when the voters may actually put fear above their self-interest, and pull the lever for some inexperienced unknown. In fact, I’m pretty sure we’re about to head into one of those periods where the voters are about to get pretty irrational.

So, all things being equal, you’re right – McCain would win this.

But with the way things are going right now, I wouldn’t bet on that proposition. In fact, as of this week, I’d bet against it.

Except we don't vote this week

Dave_in_Fla (Diary) Thursday, September 25th at 8:45AM EST (link)

I would cautiously agree with you if this crisis occurred on October 27th. But it didn’t.

Personally, I have faith that the majority of the voting public does act in a rational manner, and that most of the irrational ones don’t actually vote. I think people take their civic duty seriously, and make a decision on what they think is best of the country.

Look at Han, he will be voting for Obama because he thinks that is the best thing to do for the country. I think Han is completely wrong, but I don’t think he is working from irrationality.

Election depends on turnout

RMJ (Diary) Thursday, September 25th at 8:46AM EST (link)

I agree that the vast majority of voters have made up their minds. However I think there are 4-5% that are still deciding.

But the real issue is turnout. The partisan mix that actually votes on (or before) November 4 will determine the election.

If the 18-25 crowd comes out in droves then McCain has a very steep hill to climb.

If the youth vote fizzles like it always has before then Obama has a problem.

The debates are probably the last real game changers and if Sarah Palin can knock Biden down a time or two it would be a major benefit to the GOP ticket.

unscrew the inscrutable

ladyofcarlisle Thursday, September 25th at 8:46AM EST (link)

The US has been sliding closer toward European style socialism ever since I was born. Sure we’ve had Reagan and Bush 2 push through tax reductions and speak of an ownership society but nonetheless, anytime there is a crisis, problem or challenge of any sort, we expect the federal government to make it all right. Perhaps Obama is the candidate we deserve. The silver lining is that if Obama wins (and this looks like the ever increasing reality), the Democrats will finally be forced to stop whining and take responsibility for the first time in 15 years. McCain can be so impetuous and unpredictable and frankly it is getting rather old. Cancelling the debate, suspending his campaing, the stops and starts and keeping Sarah Palin from communicating her substance to even local reporters is becoming ever frustrating and down right inscrutable.

When it comes down to the bottom line however, I don’t see how he can possibly win. He continues to demonstrate that he has no original ideas, he consistently demonstrates poor judgment, he makes comments like, ‘I will do whatever is required of me’, in regards to the bailout/rescue.

I just don’t see how it’s possible for people to be that blind.

The lines in this election are not our viewpoints

padre29 Thursday, September 25th at 9:47AM EST (link)

This is the first election since 1996 that the moderate middle really will decide the election, that means that Conservatives have a out of alignment point of view.

WE assume that it will be a turn out the base election, election 2008 is not 2004, it is up to the buffet voters this time around, and that sort of voter is not the type that we have dealt with before, in fact, not since 1996 has this voter swung the election, what plays out as madness to “us” may or may not make sense “to them”.

That is sort of my central thesis

Dave_in_Fla (Diary) Thursday, September 25th at 9:58AM EST (link)

We may see socialism as madness. The majority of the electorate may not. If they don’t then Obama has won. But if the country still fundamentally rejects socialism, then McCain has won.

This election really is about a stark difference in the future direction of the country.

Yes indeed: Over

Tim_Wyo Thursday, September 25th at 10:57AM EST (link)

Yes, my friends, the election is indeed over. It really was over the minute Sarah Palin’s name was added to the ticket. Her addition created quite a media scramble and a lot of free publicity for the republican ticket – and it boosted the GOP in the polls temporarily. Over the next several weeks, however, the nation will get to see how empty that pot is. The VP debates, the historical record, sound bites, Palin’s record – it will all come together to show that, while Palin is a smart, ambitious, charismatic person, she doesn’t really know jack about world history, current global events, the economy and how it works, etc. etc. The nation will realize that she’s mainly a figurehead and not someone who should be elected to such a high position of power in our country.

In addition, your ticket is doomed because the fact is, your party has brought about the single biggest increase in federal debt (the TRUE measure of the size of government) ever recorded for a two-term president. Your party is the architect of the deregularization (“let the MARKET determine what’s best”) of the banking industry that has spawned this massive set of problems. Your party has started two wars that everybody now sees as wrong-headed, expensive, and costly in terms of lives.

Of course there will be people voting republican for core reasons that current events, candidate competency, and the state of the union will not affect. But most will realize that republicans have had their turn, and frankly, you guys have screwed things up. It doesn’t take a genius to see that the growth and stability of the 90′s has been squandered. The problems that exist now for our nation are not with us because of the last two years, they’ve been eight years in the making. It takes that long to screw things up this bad.

I’m sorry but it is our turn now. The future is our time.

See? This pretty much makes my point

I think a little too much of the Bill Buckley eriudite mystique has rubbed off on them.

Totally agree on Derbyshire, I skip all of his posts now.

Lowery I’ve talked to on the phone back when Rumsfeld left as SECDEF, he needed some inside baseball understanding about how the Pentagon works. I think he is a little too much about polls, without looking at the internals (Thank God they have Gereghty there to do that).

Goldberg I run hot and cold on. Sometimes I think he is trying to hard to be above it all. He is better when he is just being a guy.

KLo I generally like, and have traded some emails with. Yeah she had a huge crush on Rommney, but then I voted for Rommney too so I can hardly fault her personally. :)

I’ll be going on that cruise they are holding after the election. If this election goes the way I think it will, then I plan to be quite honest about what I think of their opinions leading up to it, while I’m talking to them over drinks. :)

but especially this:

[A]nytime there is a crisis, problem or challenge of any sort, we expect the federal government to make it all right.

That is precisely our problem. And it is not just a problem with liberals and Democrats (or independents and moderates), it is also a problem among us conservatives and Republicans.

For me, case in point is this bailout. Unlike some, I agree that there really is a serious problem here: a problem of liquidity and credit in the capital market. Yes, something must be done. But why is it assumed that the something that must be done is some sort of Federal bailout?

I have an idea. Instead of having the Federal government spend over $700,000,000,000 of the taxpayers money to by private assets at prices it has no way of valuing, why not stop the Federal government from taxing the more than $700,000,000,000 from taxpayers in the first place and let the market (i.e. the collective wisdom of all market actors, namely the taxpayers themselves) determine the value of those assets?

The VP debates, the historical record, sound bites, Palin’s record – it will all come together to show that, while Palin is a smart, ambitious, charismatic person, she doesn’t really know jack about world history, current global events, the economy and how it works, etc. etc. The nation will realize that she’s mainly a figurehead and not someone who should be elected to such a high position of power in our country.

The Presidential debates, the historical record, sound bites, Obama’s record – it will all come together to show that, while Obama is a smart, ambitious, charismatic person, he doesn’t really know jack about world history, current global events, the economy and how it works, etc. etc. The nation will realize that he’s mainly a figurehead and not someone who should be elected to such a high position of power in our country.

My other assertion that republicans have started two wars that ended up not working out that well is, I hope, not in need of serious argument.

I said conservative, not right wing

Dave_in_Fla (Diary) Sunday, September 28th at 10:40AM EST (link)

Knee jerk emotionalism exists on both the right and the left. But conservatism is typically based on rational thought, liberalism never is since their ideas have been proven to fail in practice every time. Only someone consumed by emotionalism (like hope) would continue to push for solutions that have never worked. The other two types of people that would are the disingenuous and the insane.

Kind of makes the “reality based community” look like a specious canard, doesn’t it?

Asking for Vote

schmendrik9 Sunday, September 28th at 4:06PM EST (link)

To appeal to independent voters, John McCain hasn’t done few things. He hasn’t asked for people’s vote in any of his speeches. It is as though he seems to think that he is entitled to it. Obama always finishes his speech by asking people’s vote and by asking his supporters to work him.
That itself underscores many unsaid things.

In this respect, you analysis is off the mark

Reggieh Sunday, September 28th at 4:06PM EST (link)

I think the reason you guys are seeing more liberals and anti-republicans showing up here is two-fold
1. There are simply more of us this year.

  1. It is not so much to discourage you all, but you see the left-wing blogosphere has grown massively, and while it is fun to hang out in the left-wing blogosphere it lacks any sort of argumentative clash. That is the only reason I ever come here, it is because I crave argumentative clash, not because I give a rat’s arse about “discouraging” you all. Ufortunately, you all hardly provide me with any argumentative clash either. All you guys do is stick your fingers in your ears and threaten to ban people.

Hmmm. . .hard to get the formatting right on this site.

Reggieh Sunday, September 28th at 4:17PM EST (link)

Looks like my formatting came out a bit convuluted in that last post. Doesn’t matter, you can all still read it for the most part.

Since I am writing another comment, I guess I’ll also take the time to complain a touch about this website. Basically, I think this website would be better if it were more like dailykos. You know what I mean? On dailykos, the comments pop up constantly, as opposed to on here you have to constantly referesh the page to see what new comments are being posted. On dailykos if you post a comment it appears immediately instead of on here where it directs you to another page and then you have to click back to the original diary you were looking at to see if your comment got posted, and then you have to refresh a couple of times to see if anyone replied to your comment.

I don’t want to sound insulting to the founders and maintainers of this site, but it seems like a very poorly constructed rightwing version of dailykos. As though someone said, “hey, let’s make a right-wing version of dailykos,” but then they did a really crappy job doing it.

I’m not saying this to make you all angry or whatever, it really is just constructive criticism in the hopes that you all will upgrade your website just a bit. It would make communication easier here and it would make it easier for users to debate each others points.

They're cute when they're cocky.

Bush and Home Ownership

benjjneb (Diary) Sunday, September 28th at 4:57PM EST (link)

I’ll let his own words speak for him,

The President believes that homeownership is the cornerstone of America’s vibrant communities and benefits individual families by building stability and long-term financial security. In June 2002, President Bush issued America’s Homeownership Challenge to the real estate and mortgage finance industries to encourage them to join the effort to close the gap that exists between the homeownership rates of minorities and non-minorities. The President also announced the goal of increasing the number of minority homeowners by at least 5.5 million families before the end of the decade.

The details of his plan to achieve those goals.

And so what are the barriers that we can deal with here in Washington? Well, probably the single barrier to first-time homeownership is high down payments. People take a look at the down payment, they say that’s too high, I’m not buying. They may have the desire to buy, but they don’t have the wherewithal to handle the down payment. We can deal with that.

I called upon the private sector to help us and help the home buyers. We need more capital in the private markets for first-time, low-income buyers. And I’m proud to report that Fannie Mae has heard the call and, as I understand, it’s about $440 billion over a period of time. They’ve used their influence to create that much capital available for the type of home buyer we’re talking about here. It’s in their charter; it now needs to be implemented. Freddie Mac is interested in helping. I appreciate both of those agencies providing the underpinnings of good capital.

The full speech here. This housing collapse was a collective effort, but you willfully mislead yourself if you fail to acknowledge the essential contributions of President Bush and the Republican congress.

Deregulation Argument Doesn't Work

PetraeusForPresident (Diary) Sunday, September 28th at 5:01PM EST (link)

England, Spain, and Italy all experienced massive housing and mortgage bubbles at the same time we did.

The first bank failure in this mess was Northern Rock in England.

Did the left-wing Labour Party in Britain practice “Cowboy Capitalism” deregualtion too? Give me a break.

The problem can’t be deregulation and lack of oversight in the U.S. if the quasi-socialists in Europe were equally or even less regulated than we were.

If there was any problem it was lack of oversight of the government itself: Fannie and Freddie.

Also lack of corporate governance in banks with prominent Democrats like Robert Rubin, Erskine Bowles, and Laura D’Andrea Tyson on the Boards of Directors.

Red Florida rebel..speaks out, Dave!

THE_RED_REBEL (Diary) Sunday, September 28th at 5:11PM EST (link)

CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN.. and Fellow Floridian..first let me commend you on a post well done!! I thank you for your sound logic, evenhandedness and common sense. Now , please allow me to voice a different ‘Pebble in my sandal’ moment.. Can you please tell me why it is that I am getting that sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach again? It seemingly arrives right on schedule every 4th year in November. My Point?: I AM already DISGUSTED AND DESPONDENT about the upcoming and eventual ‘Florida Voting Phenomenon’ fallout.

Remember the sullying our Beautiful state fell victim to? And the awful, undeserved battering and abuse she(we)took? The inevitable RINGSIDE MALIGNING we Red Floridians took?

Sadly,I feel another mauling coming on.
Pass the Pink bottle ,please.

Also, If you and I (along with thousands of other Red State Florida Natives and Voters..)voted honestly , how is it that we keep ending up in the corner after 8 rounds with a bloody lip and 2 black eyes?(oops can I say black?)

I AM 44 YEARS OLD AND HAVE NEVER VOTED for a demoncrap !! WHERE DO ‘THEY’ COME FROM? Why are they here?

For crying out loud, I mean I drive a red car and sleep only on the right side of my marriage bed!! But..I digress.

So here’s my take: Its got to be the frikin Cranky Yankees. That’s the only logical explanation. They come down to our Glorious state, buy a plot and proceed to register to vote here (I know for certain it happens,as my husband has an Aunt who hails from mASSachusetts and scurries to Boynton Beach every 6 months) Then-returns BACK to their Northern Hellholes register there and VOTE IN BOTH states.. That’s the only logical explanation. Right, Dave? I mean there just can’t be that many blue transplant idiots in our Beloved state. Right?

Read on. As this REALLY happened 8 years ago..
I reside in the Military buckle of the state. Northwest Florida Panhandle: Proud Home to 6 military bases.Countless military members and spouses,(myself included). Where, in 2000 Governor Jeb Bush called our local 1370 AM talk radio host Luke McCoy and declared, “Luke if my brother is to win the presidency, it will come from the voters of Northwest Florida” Well, Mission accomplished- You’re welcome America !!! So here’s my point: That this time if and WHEN we win this election for the Nation I would like a simple THANK YOU .That’s all. No law suits, no hanging chad investigators, no supposedly disgruntled or disenfranchised
voters’!!!
Yep, just a simple thank you will do.

Instead, I sense the arrival of the inevitable bitchin’ and moanin’ of the whiney, visceral, vengeful, liberal left wing nuts that takes place following the days, weeks and even years after the voting cycle has ended.

So , please just convey it along with your brilliant perspectives to those whiners to simply just say thank you to the great Red State Voters of Florida!!

And as I dismount my soapbox, I thank you for your consideration Brother Dave. Keep up the good work!

Wishing you continued bRIGHT sunshine and conservative warmth. .

Bradley Effect

PetraeusForPresident (Diary) Sunday, September 28th at 6:00PM EST (link)

It’s too hot of a subject for most in the media to touch, but it’s real.

There are a LOT of Democrats out there who are not onboard with Obama, but are afraid to say it to people outside their closest family and friends for fear of being labeled a racist.

The scary part is what the reaction could be in some cities if Obama is winning in the polls going into election day and ends up losing the election – which is what I think will happen.

My God! I feel like I am trapped in a bad dream; McCain refuses to call Obama out! Obama keeps repeating this shameless lie that he will cut taxes for 95% of Americans, never mind that 40% of Americans don’t even pay taxes!

McCain refuses to call out the real villains in this entire financial melt down saga, the liberal democrats that run Congress Barney “Purple” Frank, Chris “Dirty Money” Dodd and Chucky “Sorry” Schumer. I AM TIRED OF POLITE CONSERVATIVES!

As a black conservative, it is time for McCain to call Obama out and tell Barry “Yo Mama” the next time Barry floats another lie to the American people.

Mr. McCain in the immortal words of that idiot P-Diddy, it is time to fight back or die! I hate to say it, but if McCain is tied or behind in the conservative bedrock states of Indiana and North Carolina, then we are in big trouble.

I pray and hope all of you are right, but as of 9/28/08 this conservative is very uneasy, I am not panicked yet, but I am very, very nervous.

This idea that you propose is spirited, but lacks merit. The biggest advocates for free market on our side got bounced early in our primary. The Repbublican primary runner-up was Huckabee for crying out loud and he was the biggest socialist in the race.

My worry is that the small government battle cry has no powerful advocates anymore. Let’s face it, John McCain is not for small government. He is for low taxes, yes. He is against socialized medicine, yes. But he, along with most prominent Republicans, has accepted that we must “regulate”, use the government to fight global warming, restrict speech in elections, etc.

Where is this proof of a coming surge of small government voters? Wouldn’t Fred Thompson be our candidate if this were the case?
