Axelrod, Gibbs, and Pelosi — Why Not Vote Tomorrow?

Axelrod, message maven for Obama, says they will have the votes in the House. Really. It says so right here, on ABC NEWS.

And Chuck Todd of NBC News tweets:

Clyburn on #MTP (Meet the Press) says House Dems do NOT yet have the votes. Matches Pelosi who said “when you have the votes, you call the vote.”

AP is now also reporting the U.S. House Whip Clyburn admitting they do not have the votes. Up until now, Clyburn has been trying to dodge the vote count question by saying he did not have a bill to whip, because they don’t know what is in it. (Vapor bill, part infinite.)

But the crush of events has used up those who-me?-I-dunno excuses. Now, Clyburn must admit the truth, they don’t have the votes.

Meanwhile, at the White House, Gibbs is proclaiming that a week from today ObamaCare will be the “law of the land.”

But they still have not scheduled a vote. And the vote was Thursday, then Friday and now they are talking about Saturday.

Simply put, they do not have the votes, with or without there “we’re going to pass the bill without voting on it” outrage — during “Sunshine Week” for transparent government. Ha, ha, ha.

If this thing passes...

joejm65 Sunday, March 14th at 4:20PM EST (link)

it won’t be because Congress likes it. That’s one of the sadder dynamics of this whole affair. If it passes, it’ll pass because of deals, not because our representatives think it’s any good. In that context, it can already be viewed as a classic failure. The people who have to pass this thing don’t like it, but they’ll probably pass it anyway. Sad.

So, the House Members hate the policy, hate the politics and the process

Dan Perrin (Diary) Sunday, March 14th at 7:54PM EST (link)

but are going to vote yes.

Are you from inside the beltway?

No...

joejm65 Sunday, March 14th at 10:23PM EST (link)

I am not from inside the Beltway, and I despise this bill with all my heart. I’m just making an observation. If this was a good bill and folks in D.C. were happy with it, it would be law right now. It’s not. But, if we’re all talking about the new HC law next Sunday, that means that Pelosi got enough votes. Will she have gotten enough votes because fence-sitters suddenly like the bill and agree with it? I don’t think so. Like Stupak said, there’s a lot of arm-twisting going on. To me, arm-twisting means pressure, and it means deals.

Please.....

lunarmanathome (Diary) Sunday, March 14th at 8:04PM EST (link)

clarify your post as it makes no sense at all. Deals? What deals and with whom? The House passed their version – can you please enlightne me on the quid pro quo that must have taken place to whip those votes….?

Deals....

joejm65 Sunday, March 14th at 10:35PM EST (link)

can be made with House members in the form of future promises. ‘Give us your yes vote, and we’ll make sure we funnel $xxx to your district for’… whatever. Vote now, get your payout later. That’s what I meant.

It's hard to believe Pelosi would

ColoKid Sunday, March 14th at 4:26PM EST (link)

schedule a vote if the votes weren’t there for her. So until a vote is actually scheduled, I think it’s safe to assume they don’t have the votes. It seems clear they don’t have the votes now. But as the week progresses, I think the pressure put on Dems currently leaning toward a “no” vote will be incredible. Threats, bribery, you name it. I think they’ll almost have to have the vote before the Easter recess, when House members have to go home and face their angry constituencies. If the bribes and threats haven’t worked by then, the Dems will be forced to rely on the Slaughter scheme and hope for the best.

Calling a vote without having the vote happens. The GOP did it.

Dan Perrin (Diary) Sunday, March 14th at 7:51PM EST (link)

The Republicans did it on the House vote on the Medicare Prescription Drug bill.

They were two votes short when they called the vote and they knew it.

So, just because she calls the vote, does not mean she does not have the votes.

They may want an end point to health care to finally rid themselves of it.

No Way

abeldred (Diary) Sunday, March 14th at 8:58PM EST (link)

I don’t believe there’s a snowball’s chance in hell she will call the vote til she has railroaded, threatened or bought off enough votes. She is much too arrogant not to mention Obummer’s arrogance. They don’t want to be publicly humiliated. But sadly, I think they will get the votes. Our next step will be to get as many states as possible to file lawsuits asap and tie the bill up in court.

Anyone willing to make a prediction?

mavericktime Sunday, March 14th at 4:41PM EST (link)

Is Gibbs right that ObamaCare will be the law of the land by next Sunday?
Will the vote keep being postponed until Obama and Pelosi can strong-arm enough House Democrats to vote for the Senate bill?
Will the Democrats use the tricky maneuver of not really voting on the Senate bill but voting for the rule only, and thereby getting it through?
Will Obama and Pelosi call “uncle” before the Easter recess?
Will they hold the vote this week, and the bill goes down to defeat?
If the vote is held this week, or before the Easter recess, what will be the final count?
Will Republicans shut down the Senate (don’t know how this would work if they don’t have the majority)?
Will the Republicans take any extraordinary action, aside from continuing to bad-mouth ObamaCare?

What do you think about the options I listed

mavericktime Sunday, March 14th at 4:49PM EST (link)

Personally, I don’t know what will happen.

On one hand, I can’t imagine that Democrats would allow Obama to lose face like this.

On the other, I agree with David Brooks that I don’t see how Pelosi gets the votes. This bill, whether it has any actual merits or not, has been so maligned, that I doubt whether people will ever change their minds about it. I know I won’t. I don’t care how many “fixes” they come up with!

It's a coin toss.

ColoKid Sunday, March 14th at 5:13PM EST (link)

Heads — if Pelosi and her armtwisters haven’t been able to get to 216 yes votes by now, they probably won’t be able to. There just are’t enough Dems willing to fall on their swords for the party.

Tails — this is the same party that gave out the Louisiana Purchase and the Cornhusker Kickback in the Senate to get what they want. They’re just getting started with such techniques in the House.

If these democrats can hold off until Easter they will have the cover to do the right thing (why do they need cover to do the right thing?) bc we are going to have 2 weeks of intense town halls on TV every night. My optimism for killing this bill goes through the roof if it isn’t passed next week. I still don’t know, it seems like the holdouts have dwindled enough that the gang can muscle through the last few votes but we’ll see. Easter can save us, it did once, now we need one more.

I wouldn't be too relieved

Up or Down Vote?

kdoc Sunday, March 14th at 5:18PM EST (link)

I thought Obama said the American people wanted an “up or down vote” on this thing. Why don’t they go ahead and have an “up or down” vote on it RIGHT NOW? There’s nothing stopping the Democratic leadership from calling for a vote NOW. Oh, wait… by “up or down” vote Obama really means “a vote that passes by hook or by crook, with no chance of failure.”

They're not expecting to get the votes...ever.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Do you have any predictions on Atmire? He has been getting a lot of press as a key swing vote. He went against the house bill, but seems like he really wants to vote for this bill. His district went for McCain and opposes the bill 58 to 30. I read this from LA Times.

His comments were very pro doing something on healthcare. Of course the dems could have done something to improve health care coverage by now if that was real their goal. They even quoted him after his meeting with Tea Party activists and he indicated that they wouldn’t vote for him anyway.

There is precedent for scheduling a vote without

This is the usual Obama/Pelosi BS to create a sense of inevitability, that we’ve seen a dozen times this miserable year

I can’t remember the source but on Fox 2 week ago a WH staffer leaked that they are tired of this dragging on like a millstone around their necks and are going to push for a vote and let it sink or float once and for all

IMHO Pelosi will force a vote even if she’s 5 votes short this week once and for all– they hope that the fencesitters will be able to be cajoled or threatened or get swept up in the momentum once the vote goes live– this is not uncommon

let’s hope to God we can see this monstrosity finally killed and voted down once and for all this week after 13 months of misery

Dan, thank you again for being such a consistent voice of optimism– as a young physician, all of this has stressed me in particular out to no end the last year

I just want to go to sleep tonight and wake up in November already

I don’t even know what this reconciliation bill means. . . if they pass it, same thing has to get green light in Senate since they haven’t passed it, so maybe it doesn’t mean much and our eye still needs to be on the ball (i.e. Senate bill passing in House).
