Turns out that the interpretation that the Dems are bluffing on reconciliation is a charitable interpretation. It assumes they have a plan.
The other alternative view, that the President really is serious about reconciliation, is so unserious that most in D.C. don’t take it seriously. (Read Eric Cantor’s House Whip Count Memo here about why the Dems do not have the votes in the House for Reconciliation.)
The naivete, the inexperience, the reality-bending-ability to seriously believe that one more speech or one more try will make it pass, must be so pervasive in the mind of the President and those around him, that you have to wonder what will happen to the psyche of these Pollyannas when reality finally and urgently cannot be ignored or hidden, from what will be their ever widening eyes.
Add the irrationality of the Speaker on passing “universal health care” to the mix, and you have the makings of yet another uber-trainwreck — the first was last August, the second December-January, and now, the third in April-May or May-June?
Meanwhile, yesterday, the Chairman of the Blue Dogs Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC) said “I was actually surprised that they’re pushing it again.” Shuler also said “I don’t think a comprehensive bill can pass.”
The Speaker got tiff-ity when she heard of Shuler’s remarks: “You know what? With all due respect to everyone, we just saw the president’s proposal today. I don’t know that anybody in our caucus is saying we’re not going to pass a bill.”
But the President is not taking about “a bill,” he’s talking (for about the millionth time — including a speech to a joint session of Congress) about passing his bill. Well, it’s not actually a bill. There is no legislative language and it has not been introduced in Congress. Obama has more of a power point.
The Speaker was pushing Obama’s death-by-power-point, right up until the second day after it was unveiled. Yesterday, the Speaker pivoted cleanly to “a bill.”
The Speaker is not alone. AP reports that “House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said comprehensive reform would be best but it’s not all or nothing.” Hoyer said “We may not be able to do all.”
Gee, what a shock. Everyone but the delusionals saw this coming from about 17 miles away.
On Day Two of the White House roll out, the two top Dem Leaders of the House are publicly saying they are not going to pass it.
And the list of NYETS is growing. For example, leaders of the House liberals like Rep. Weiner and Rep. Kucinich are publicly saying, “why should I vote for it without a public option?” Indeed, why should you?
Then add the pro-life Dems who have their heels dug in, and are at a firm NO. The President is wasting the country’s time and has been for 14 months on ObamaCare. Doesn’t the county have other problems that need addressing?
You don’t need to be a mere 17 miles away to see what is coming, hell, you can see it from a low earth orbit. It’s the end of the line. And for clarity of what else is coming, and why, just watch Charlie Cook.
The Speaker will lose her job when the Dems lose the House, which they will, and the single biggest reason will be ObamaCare. It showed the public the Dems do not care what voters think. The Dems bought off opposition with the Louisiana Purchase and the Nebraska Kick-back — knowing the public hates it — but they did it anyway.
The downright lack of respect I have for the Dems over ObamaCare is that they persist, knowing it is politically destructive to themselves and their colleagues. And the Dems still do not realize — despite Massachusetts, Virginia and New Jersey — that they will lose, and not pass any bill.
Trying to pass ObamaCare now is like a Jackass stunt gone wrong, where the idiot doing it dies. In this version, everyone told the idiot if you try the stunt, you will die. But the idiot was arrogant and was so desperate to pull off the never-been-done-before-stunt.
Here is another example of the Dems self-destructiveness from Bloomberg:
White House officials and congressional Democrats signaled a willingness to push through President Barack Obama’s new health-care plan with only Democratic support, even with a bipartisan summit set for this week.

They don't care
DerKrieger (Diary) Wednesday, February 24th at 8:01AM EST (link)Karl Mark Jr. and his mistress Nancy simply do not care what We the People or our elected representatives think. Their lust for power truly is totalitarian in nature. Obama probably stays up at night lamenting he doesn’t have the personal power of a Chavez, Castro, or Hu Jintao. He is clearly not interested in representative democracy and is searching for a way to work around our form of government. If he could dispense with our Republic you can bet your last dollar that he would if it meant completing his agenda and fulfilling his vision of changing our nation. He’s a Marxist and at this point only fools and children can deny it. The more he and the Dem leadership for this the more exposed they are for who they really are so I say, keep it up. In fact, push harder and louder. I only hope the Big government Republicans are paying attention as they have been part of the problem for decades with their mealy mouth “bipartisanship” aka selling out.

So just to protect my legacy and pay back the SOBs back whose neurotic obsessive-compulsive attachment to a bill pretty much nobody wants that would destroy our healthcare system while darn near breaking the back of this country in the process, I would vote against them every step of the way and make their life a political hell. The second story has a great analogy:
“Those of us who remember the 1970s recall the frolics sparked by America’s last great experiment with widespread price caps – namely, those on oil and natural gas. The resulting short supplies gave us the thrill of waiting in long lines – and sometimes even getting into fistfights – for the privilege of buying a few gallons of gasoline. People literally chilled out in their homes for want of heat. The Nixon administration imposed a national speed limit of 55 MPH. These and other consequences certainly made for a memorable decade.
What cool adventures await us if Mr. Obama succeeds in giving Uncle Sam power to control insurance rates? Reduced coverage? Hidden fees aimed at skirting government regulations? Surly service? More trouble and delays collecting on our policies?”

More Vote Scoring for the GOP @ HC Summit
GJ Merits (Diary) Wednesday, February 24th at 11:47PM EST (link)Read Rove’s piece here: http://ow.ly/16EPKX
I disagree with him on one point – this President does not deserve any respect. He is a socialist at best and a Marxist at worst. Do not be frightened of a man who is attempting to tear down this country. If the GOP does not correct the president per Rove’s piece and on any other occasion where he attempt to lie to American people without the threat of a correction by a GOP member, the action will be scored as a vote for ObamaCare. All the gains by the GOP with the electorate will evaporate.
Also, if reconciliation occurs in the Senate, as hard as it will be, DeMint’s tactic of using hundreds and, if necessary, thousands of amendments to slow down the process all the way to November if necessary must be done by the GOP or it will be scored as a vote for ObamaCare with all the accompanying consequences.
The GOP better head into the summit with every intention of killing ObamaCare. They had better head out of the summit with the same attitude. No excuses.

The Dems have already done this with a couple of things, and I wouldn’t put it past them to keep on doing it.
Thankfully, we should be able to get some legislation passed after November – my only concern is that Obama is essentially a lame duck since last month. I can’t remember a time when a president was essentially neutered this early into his presidency. I’m sure we will get through this – we’re scrappy, after all – but it will be an interesting few years, to say the least.

In your title you state that the the Speaker and House Majority Leader Back Away from ObamaCare. However, I don’t actually see that in the story (or maybe I am missing it). I looks like Nancy had a fit when Hoyer dared to challenge the party narrative. I see the whip count leading me to believe the members are backing away, but where is the evidence the leaders of the both chambers are backing away? Is your conclusion implied by the data or is there some explicit reference I am missing here.

As I state above, the R’s need to explain why price controls are bad and why Blue Cross had to hike their costs to begin with. This needs to be done at the summit.

It seems more and more...
writeblock Wednesday, February 24th at 12:40PM EST (link)…that the whole point of the summit “bipartisan” charade is to sway public opinion in order to shift votes in the House. It seems the WH believes the animus against the bill is largely due to the perceived lack of openness as well as the lack of bipartisan support and it seeks to remedy this. There will be a lot of coverage with the press pushing hard for passage. If that’s the case, then this would explain House leadership doubts. They don’t know if the p.r. push will work. It’s also an admission as of now they don’t have the votes. And it’s an admission they are contemplating a smaller bill as an alternate course.
Meanwhile the GOP has weighed its own options. Would attending be better than not attending? It has concluded attending would be better since it then could argue its own reform perspective in a widely covered public forum–which would be preferable to giving the Democrats the stage all to themselves without the public’s awareness that private sector solutions are possible. Still the GOP contingent feels it’s in a no-win situation. If it attends, it knows it will be out-talked by the smooth-talking President who will keep the focus on himself. If it doesn’t attend, it will be painted as simply obstructionist–though in fact non-attendance might speak louder than words, reflecting the public antagonism towards Obamacare. So it’s a close call.
My own view is the summit will fail because of the President’s lack of credibility on this issue. The public is not all-of-a-sudden going to believe in him after countless previous appeals have failed, including an appearance before the joint session of Congress. So I doubt this will sway the House–and I think the leadership already suspects this, especially after Massachusetts. Things are pretty much fixed at this point. I also think politically the pluses of this summit are outweighed by the minuses. On the plus side the public will see the President reaching out to the GOP in an open forum. On the minus side it reveals how much the WH still gives priority to health care while ignoring the bad economy.
It's not about swaying house members
Thomas_Hauber Wednesday, February 24th at 2:03PM EST (link)It is about blaming republicans. They have always known that their chances have been slowly evaporating for months. This all comes down to a CYA.

NotSoBlueStater (Diary) Wednesday, February 24th at 9:54AM EST (link)I HATE the health care plan. I prefer the Republican “smaller bills that actually curb costs (the real threat)” but a mile.
That said, it seems like the Democrats truly believe in what they are doing, and are willing to fight and “die” for it. There something noble n that – however misguided.

There is the just war test
Dan Perrin (Diary) Wednesday, February 24th at 10:10AM EST (link)which could, I guess, be applied to nobility.
The test asks first, is the cause of the war just? The Dems answer yes.
The text asks second, can you win? The delusionals answer yes.
But is winning the battle on ObamaCare going to be so costly, they lose the war?
Is it noble to win a battle to lose the war?
My answer is clearly NO.
This is really simple
Dan Perrin (Diary) Wednesday, February 24th at 10:15AM EST (link)the harder the Dems push on health care the more they lose politically.
It is the iron rule of 2009-2010. The delusionals see that this is not true.
The realists see it is true but can’t stop the delusionals or do not have the courage to do so.
And they keep losing ground politically. Over and over and over again.
My question on this however is
Leopard1996 (Diary) Wednesday, February 24th at 10:32AM EST (link)Are they willing to sacrifice the pawns, (2010 elections) knowing that nothing can easlly get changed because the GOP may have a majority, but they don’t have the majority enough to override Obama’s veto on anything that they would pass? Add to that equation, the complicit press that will show that the GOP could not do anything subtantive and also hang over people’s heads that if they don’t vote for Obama part 2, with a Dem house and senate, the benefits they died at the stake for in 2010 will go bye-bye with the GOP pres, and congress, after they have made the down payment already.
I don’t like this thing at all, but at this stage of the game I am kind of pessimistic about the whole thing especially if they pull this reconciliation route and get the “fixes” from the house put into the senate bill.

greyfox65 Thursday, February 25th at 9:28AM EST (link)about 14 months ago. You state “for about the millionth time….”, in your post. For about the 10,000th time since 1993, and I’m getting tired of saying it, ObamaCare does not reform health care. It “reforms” insurance. Health care comes not from the insurance industry, it comes from the medical industry. THAT is where the reform initiative should be focused. IT is the industry that soaked up 17.3% of the 2009 GDP, not the health insurance industry. Liberals and their Congressional lackeys have always made that mistake: Hillary in 1993, T. Kennedy/Hubert Humphrey and the ADA in 1972, and now Obama et al.
The health insurance industry, bad as they are, is a simple business. In short, they pay our medical bills presented to them by the medical industry. I don’t argue that the medical industry doesn’t have problems staying profitable. And, if everybody in the country had health insurance the medical industry would certainly benefit, as would the health insurance industry. BUT, the Obama Administration is arguing an unsupportable premise, that nationalizing insurance will bring down health care costs. That was Ted Kennedy’s argument and Hillary Clinton’s argument and it does not hold water. It seems the old saying is true: tell a lie long enough and it becomes the truth.
I support “REAL” health care reform. I don’t support this Obamasham and have been emailing and faxing and calling “people of interest” about it since March 2009.
