Connecting the dots between Maureen Dowd of the NYT, and Emmett Tyrrell of the American Spectator:
Dowd:
“If we can’t catch a Nigerian with a powerful explosive powder in his oddly feminine-looking underpants and a syringe full of acid, a man whose own father had alerted the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, a traveler whose ticket was paid for in cash and who didn’t check bags, whose visa renewal had been denied by the British, who had studied Arabic in al-Qaida sanctuary Yemen, whose name was on a counterterrorism watch list, who can we catch?”
“The lesson that the President should have learned from last week’s “systemic failure” is that government is a very imperfect instrument. A government that takes over 16% of our economy promising to bring us good health at a reasonable cost is an instrument doomed to failure and at a catastrophic cost.“

Barack Obama is a “Systemic Failure”

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

bkeyser Thursday, December 31st at 12:57PM EST (link)I’ve got three that I use to tell the tale of this latest debacle.
Of course, it all starts with the competence of the entire Administration.
And we know that Barry isn’t one to over-react to things.
But I am happy that they’re working on solutions.
bkey- Great work--I'm a fan!
louisiana (Diary) Thursday, December 31st at 1:17PM EST (link)If you do a Landrieu joker picture, be sure to include “Louisiana Purchase” on it. Judging from her office e-mails & Senate floor speech, I think she’s a tad bit sensitive to that label.
Thanks louisiana!

And for the record… the failure was in a foreign airport, not a U.S. airport. Not saying it can’t happen here, but we keep missing the point that it was not a failure of US screening personnel this time…

Charles Cianfrocca (Diary) Thursday, December 31st at 1:28PM EST (link)…I’m sure someone will know, but I thought that on flights bound for the USA, there are US agents on the other end to enforce restrictions. It can’t be like we just take whatever any agent of any foreign country wants to send over, can it? Well, it may be now, but it wasn’t pre-zero, was it? What president (besides the current one, I mean) would have allowed a thing like that?

Here's what I heard
GregInFla (Diary) Thursday, December 31st at 6:40PM EST (link)The Lagos, Nigeria airport security process was approved by TSA earlier in December. Thus, passengers originating there do not have to go through secondary screening at their next flight into the USA. So, the passenger, being on the gate-side of security in Amsterdam, could just go to the Delta gate. However, this assumes that the Delta/Northwest gate is in same terminal area as the flight from Lagos. I have not heard which flight he was on from Lagos.
Mark Steyn made an excellent point on radio for Rush Monday. Amsterdam is roughly half Muslim now. Detroit is near Dearborn, one of the highest concentrations of Muslims in the USA. So Delta 253 can be seen as more of a Muslim flight than, let’s say, Paris to Chicago.

Sundayjack (Diary) Thursday, December 31st at 3:01PM EST (link)I have to get something off my chest,. This notion that a “systemic failure” allowed the underwear bomber onboard is just plain wrong, and is just one more example of the “blame Bush” – slash – “I inherited this problem” responsibility avoidance. The SYSTEM was fine. It’s the EMPLOYEES who screwed up. Barack’s employees. You take the job, you own the responsibility.
This was not a systemic failure. It has worked fine for eight years. Suddenly, the system is flawed. Horse-hockey!

On another unrelated note, am I the only one who thinks it’s just incredibly cool that the last two airplane bombers (that we know about) were caught by passengers who are vigilant for anyone doing the least suspicious thing, and are willing to fight terrorist bombers with their bare hands 20,000 feet in the air? I suppose we owe that spirit to those brave dudes that died in that field in Pennsylvania. The message to bombers is: getting on the plane with the explosive stuff is only half the battle. Setting it off successfully before 200 passengers beat the hell out of you is the bigger obstacle.
Happy New Year all!

Dan Perrin (Diary) Thursday, December 31st at 6:00PM EST (link)This post does not tell the real story of my views on this matter, but the link here http://www.redstate.com/dan_perrin/2009/12/30/the-trillion-dollar-presidents-war-on-the-word-terror/ does.
"The system" is working perfectly
Jack_Savage (Diary) Thursday, December 31st at 3:45PM EST (link)Remember, this terror thing is now a law enforcement endeavor, not a “war”. The suspect has been apprehended and will face justice, with all the rights afforded a citizen of the United States – just like Obama wants. He should not have been detained, since he had not committed a crime prior to torching his weiner at the end of a transatlantic flight. Detaining him before that would have been profiling, and we all know profiling is wrong.
We all need to realize something. The reason many of us are armed is that the police are not very good at preventing a crime from being committed, or thwarting one in progress. They simply have too many restrictions to be able to do either effectively. They are awfully good at tracking a suspect down once a crime has been committed, however. Adding to that, the justice system in the United States, despite what the Saul Alinskys of the world try to badger us into believing, is dramatically tilted toward the defendent. This is why so many bad people are walking the streets.
This law enforcement effort as answer to terrorism is the reason that Mo Dowdy will need to be a little more careful winging her way to the Burning Man celebration in 2010. If we were treating this as a “war”, this man would have been dead or in Gitmo before he was able to board any flight.
Of course, that is no longer an option, so this is as good as it is going to get. Twenty years in the big house, with nine suspended and a 50% reduction for good behavior and completion of anger management classes. Welcome to Obama’s little fantasy land of unclenched fists.
What system???
snowshooze (Diary) Thursday, December 31st at 3:49PM EST (link)There is no system, but rather a pile of government agencies.
They should be disbanded and scrapped.
Even the simplest things like cell phones are supposed to be turned off..gee..throw them in the luggage…( As if a cell phone could affect navigation instruments..) are easily overlooked.
I have lost uncounted lighters, nail clippers and pocket knives and shampoo so far…now they will want body scans too, pretty personal at that point.
Various incendiaries, explosives and poisons can be modified and disguised in a multitude of clever yet simple ways.
I think we should quit trying so hard to rely on an incompetent government for our personal safety and recover some of our rights and responsibilities. More that one major flight terrorism activity has been averted by individuals who took the initiative to personally intervene after all the government security measures had failed. ( Denmark yet again kicks Obama’s tail, and produces a Hero )
When I hire an airline to fly me to Seattle, I don’t need Uncle Sam shoving his hand up my behind.
Systemic failure of the intelligence community? That's complete and absolute bunk...
rbdwiggins (Diary) Thursday, December 31st at 4:03PM EST (link)The responsibility for the marked increase in terrorist attacks is wholly owned by the Obama Administration, and primarily, the president himself.
The moment President Obama changed our posture from a war footing and chose to address Islamic Terrorism as a matter for law enforcement, decided to prosecute rather than annihilate, his administration assumed sole responsibility for all terrorist attacks on US interests that happen under his watch.

rbdwiggins, how busy are you these days?
janis (Diary) Friday, January 1st at 1:47PM EST (link)I’m always interested in how things look from the standpoint of those who are actually out in the field having to deal with the reality, not those who are in government trying to put a rosy spin on things.
Are you doing new houses these days or are you seeing an uptick in those who are remodeling instead?
Three new homes under construction...
rbdwiggins (Diary) Friday, January 1st at 2:16PM EST (link)All are custom homes in excess of 5000 SF. No spec houses.
Just finished two remodeling projects, and still have two custom decks to build on existing homes.
Looking to fill the schedule from about mid-March forward.
One of the builders we’ve done a lot of work for has put in a bid to finish four foreclosed/bank-owned properties in the NC mountains. Hopefully, we’ll get one or two of those projects.

Good for you, rb! Here in eastern middle TN,
janis (Diary) Friday, January 1st at 2:25PM EST (link)many of the construction folks we know are without work. There have been so many subdivisions created over the past 10 years that there is now a surplus of houses on the market. No matter where we go in the surrounding counties, there are a number of homes standing vacant. In the county just north of us, rental property used to be a surefire money maker as there was not enough to accomodate all the ones who wanted to rent. Now there are many duplexes that have been vacant for months.
You’re definitely in the right place and you must surely be doing some very high quality work! Have a Happy New Year, rbdwiggins, and thanks for the response.
Thanks for the kind words, janis...
rbdwiggins (Diary) Friday, January 1st at 3:09PM EST (link)My nickname around these parts is “Norm” because we use a lot of exotic hardwoods on our decks and trim, and most of the cabinetry and built-ins are joined with mortise and tenon. That said, I don’t claim to be anywhere-near-as-good as the “real” Norm Abram.

Modesty is becoming, but I imagine you
janis (Diary) Friday, January 1st at 3:30PM EST (link)earned the nickname quite honestly, rb. Mortise and tenon? That’s becoming a lost art, I would think. My husband and I recently had to remove two small cabinets that existed over the space where the fridge went when we had to buy a new one and wanted the larger model. We were disgusted to see the shoddy workmanship that held the cabinets in place to begin with.
I am eying the rest of the cabinets daily and planning how to replace them without having to mortgage the farm. It’s one of the benefits to not working right now– I have lots of time to get up to remodeling mischief.
Do you cut the M&T freehand?? nt

rbdwiggins (Diary) Friday, January 1st at 4:24PM EST (link)The exposed beams and what limited timber-framing we do is cut by hand.
I use a Delta mortising attachment on the drill-press, a Delta tenoning-jig on the table saw and a matched-set of panel cutting bits on the router table for the cabinet frames and doors.
