It was their whole plan at Incremental-ism all along with anything and everything they’ve done for Decades to drive up costs and create more excuses for the need to go Single Payer… From HMOs being forced (rather than market and Insurance companies creating), burdensome Regulations, States’ keeping cross-State competition OUT, etc….

Doing even what you suggest will be unpopular, and the GOP will have much easier time either repealing or knee-capping a ‘new regulations only’ bill. In fact, they’ll be able to run on specifically what they want to repeal and what they want to replace it with, which would actually be beneficial to our side politically.

Aside from that, such an outcome would be demoralizing to the Dem’s OWN base.

At this point, they’re are quite literally better off scrubbing the whole bill if they can’t get Single Payer/Gov’t Option through.

When we resume power, real HC reform needs to be the top priority. While regulations are easier to repeal, whoever the leadership is will still need the spine to stand up to the media (look at how MSM is now, then imagine how they will change if Obama is uncerimoniously thrown out of office), who will turn rhetoric/activism to an unprecedented fever pitch to destroy them.

Thats why I’m not real excited about 2012 even if Obama is thrown out – I don’t see any of the current hopefuls as having the political will and fortitude to actually change HC for the positive (while having the left and MSM going bat***t crazy), rather than not touching it and just putting the inevitable socialization of our country on hold till the next wave of anti-Republican sentiment hits.

Fortunately there is still lots of time for new candidates to emerge and for the Republican party to (dare I say it) grow up.

Those of us who have studied Con Law (my own education consisted of a couple of cursory review courses too many years ago) can follow along to some degree, but I’m struggling to paraphrase the argument for the liberal nitwits in my circle who refuse to think.

ObamaCare can be stopped only if public opposition remains at a fever pitch. In order for that to happen people must believe that ObamaCare can be stopped. If we become fatalistic, start to believe the Dems have won no matter what we do, we slide into apathy and let our collective guard down. And then they really will be able to put together enough senators to ram it through.

Politicians are interested in “pork” only insofar as it furthers their ultimate aim – reelection.

If the “price” for the “pork” is too high – and ObamaCare, by definition, is a price too high for politicians in all but the most Leftist states – then there will be no interest in the “pork payoff”.

I’ve seen nothing to indicate that simple pork would buy off either Snowe or Collins, at this point, as taking a “moderate” stance *against* ObamaCare does much more to buttress their reelection chances in ME than taking a small pork-y “payoff” would.

The idea that Obama, Reid & co. can “buy their way to 60″ is greatly overstated around here – that idea only becomes tenable if you believe that a significant number of people (e.g. Lincoln of AR) are willing to be bought off with a post-election-loss, post-political, big salary “sinecure” job.

So far, I’ve seen no evidence that people like Lieberman or Nelson of NE fall into this latter category. Neither do Snowe nor Collins. So far, only Lincoln and Landrieu may fall into the latter camp. And that doesn’t get them to 60…

Reid has painted himself into a corner now – first he blew off Nelson and then he pissed off Lieberman. Someone like Landrieu or Lincoln may be waiting until the price is right, but Nelson and Lieberman almost certainly can’t be bought off without fixing what they don’t like.

And Lieberman is none too happy with Reid for another reason. Harry had the latest pork-related vote on Saturday and Joe had to walk 5 miles each way in crappy weather to cast the 60th vote for it.
