There was a point in the last comprehensive health care reform debate (The Great Hillarycare War) when the House Ways and Means Committee passed out its health care reform bill despite what was an obvious revolt in the country.
It was irrational political behavior. For about five minutes, the opponents of Hillarycare were stunned.
And then the opposition decided to pull out all the stops.
That moment in The Great Obamacare War arrived yesterday, when the Speaker of the House stood firm on the public option, essentially telling the White House to go pound sand.
In effect, Speaker Pelosi just called in an air-strike on her own position.
This is not going to be pretty.
It will likely cost her the Speakership. After the 2010 elections.
If the President of her own party cannot convince her to stand down, no one can, and so now, she has essentially subjected her own members to unrestricted (obviously, non-violent) political warfare by those who oppose the public plan option.
The Pelosi-Waxman Alliance on Cap and Trade and Health Care is politically killing the Democrats in the House, and by sticking with the Public Option, Speaker Pelosi is insuring the House bill will never pass the Senate, and the Senate will see Speaker Pelosi’s position as a reason why they should just let the bill die in the Senate. I mean, with the Public Option, its not going to pass the Senate anyway.

I agree with Pelosi. Let her do what she thinks is right.

If Obama doesn’t want it, so what?
Pelosi doesn’t really CARE at all whether Obama drops public option or not.
The House is supposed to be an independent body from the Executive Branch.
A good advice for Pelosi is this: She should call this bill as:
PelosiDontCare Bill.
The wrong grammar in this new name is very tactical: it is well intended such that average Americans like Sarah Palin will never have any chance at all to understand (and for that matter, criticize) the new and improved PelosiDontCare Bill.
She should mobilize all communist Americans and other supportive thugs to push for her PelosiDontCare Bill.
In the end, the PelosiDontCare Bill will symbolize the Death of Camelot in American History. A fitting tribute to Ted Kennedy, the last of the fake Arthurians in America.
The ulta-cynic in me asks: Is it Pelosi calling in the airstrike, or
The_Gadfly (Diary) Thursday, September 3rd at 6:37AM EST (link)is it really Obama? We know he isn’t averse to saying contradictory things to the public and his friends when he thinks his comments to his friends aren’t being recorded. He knows he needs to keep his nutroot base with him. So did he, possibly through one of his staff, ask Pelosi to take that position so he can tell his nutroot friends the Speaker is saying what he would like, but as his good friend put it, sometimes his public pronouncements are made for political reasons not reasons of belief.
Good point. nt

Whitesands (Diary) Thursday, September 3rd at 7:32AM EST (link)The house must appease the left. They no it wont pass the senate. Senator Snowe and moderate Repubs are trying a measure that would eventually bring in the public option. Today’s WSJ. If prices don’t fall or a certain percentage is not covered the public option would be triggered. Again backdoor sneaky legislation. How about this after a year with a public option if the federal government spends more than it takes in they drop all feredral intrusion in health care , public schools, EPA FDA HHS and so on.
baby boomers must die
rap146 Monday, September 7th at 9:09AM EST (link)Face the economic reality, Social Security was the “radical kernel” that was planted by the Roosevelt. All the SS money collected was spent because the pols new they would never have to repay. The next step to Social Security always has been Socialized medicine, “Death rules” must be instituted to prevent the vast majority of baby boomers from living beyond 75 years and draining all remaining wealth from the gov. Good night Grandmal!
