And the crowd in Alabama speaks out

The Democrats want to take the public option plan, on their own, to the floor of the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate.

OK. (Please.) Throw me in the briar patch. No ANYTHING BUT THAT! REALLY! NO! STOP IT SOME MORE!

Here are some excerpts from the local newspaper report on the meeting:

Two thousand people poured into a town hall meeting held Monday night by U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus on health care reform, organizers said.

Bachus took questions from the audience, chosen out of a hat from note cards passed out at the beginning of the meeting.

Before answering questions, he made no mystery of his position, stating to loud applause his opposition to President Barack Obama’s health care reform plans.

“American Idol” runner-up Bo Bice’s rendition of the national anthem also garnered thunderous applause.

Bachus’ press secretary Tim Johnson said Monday’s crowd was well over attendance for the average Bachus town hall meeting. “The typical town hall might get 100 to 150 people. That was an incredible turnout,” Johnson said.

Bachus recognized that a minority of attendees were in favor of Obama’s proposal for a greater government role in health coverage for the uninsured. Some of them carried signs with slogans such as “Private Health Care in the U.S. Is Sick” and “We Want Obama’s Public Option.”

Don’t leave the party, hijack it back!

The only poll that counts is the one at the ballot box.

I don’t want to be Reagan. I want to be a Chance/Soros hybrid.

Just got it squared away

Vic Snyder’s (D-AR) shameful town hall.

Congressman Vic Snyder held a rigged townhall meeting at the Statehouse Convention Center to promote HR3200, the Obama Healthcare Plan. The meeting was not even given 24 hours notice and was held at noon, instead of after work hours. The moderator for the meeting was Skip Rutherford, Clinton School Dean, and former consultant to the Democrat National Commitee. Rutherford was also the decider of who got to ask questions. Snyder wasted the first 13 minutes or so giving the usual claims on what the bill will do (no page #s). He once again accused those who opposed healthcare of being for nothing, despite the other healthcare bill HR2520. Snyder staff members held the microphones and often moved them away from people who disagreed with HR3200. The second questioner is an obvious political plant. A real townhall meeting is being scheduled by Secure Arkansas for August 28th at UALR.

Spencer Bachus's district is

marshmom (Diary) Wednesday, August 19th at 9:09AM EST (link)

just beside mine and I have to tell you that there aren’t many people in this neck of the woods who support anything Obama has done so far. This is a pretty strongly conservative part of the country. You know, the people who “cling to their God and their guns”.
Obama hasn’t seen anything yet. Most of the town halls shown on t.v. are in districts who elected a democrat. You think those people are upset?? Those of us who live in typically conservative districts are even more outspoken and upset over this and all other government intrusion.

in person for the entire meeting. Attendees ranged from babies to a WWII vet, white, black, male, female, dressed in jeans and t-shirts to professional (most looked as if they came straight from work). Except for a few vocal outburts, all were well-behaved and overwhelmingly opposed to Obamacare. There were a handful of supporters who didn’t seem quite as brave once they became part of the crowd as they had been outside. Those whose questions were chosen were limited to 1-2 minutes and 1 question, although some went longer and had follow-up questions. After Bachus had answered several questions, he allowed the opposition to break in and ask a few questions, in the interest of “balance.” Since the Dems have the bully pulpit and the media spouting their propaganda daily, I didn’t find this necessary. Whenever anyone tended to bloviate, the crowd “encouraged” them to get to the point or question, even though Bachus kept urging that we be respectful of one another’s opinions. I thought there were too many “personal” stories with questions on both sides and not enough questions about the bill itself.

Although Bachus gave the “right” answers, he had no energy or fire. I want my congressman to fight for my beliefs and stop this nonsense of reaching across the aisle to find a consensus. I have no common ground with liberals whose idea of compromise is for Republicans to bend over which happens way to often. Bachus also kept rambling on about what needs to be done, including tort reform and stopping the flow of illegal immigrants. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to ask him why he’s waited until now to do something when he’s had 18 years. He also talked about what he’s opposed over the years, but failed to mention that he has a 4% rating from the Club for Growth’s “Repork” card, meaning that 96% of the time he did not support the 68 amendments to cut pork from the 12 annual spending bills proposed by his fellow Republicans. Several times he mentioned that the federal government was paying for this program or that and the crowd wasn’t shy about reminding him that meant the taxpayers were footing the bill. One question from a supporter asked if a family should have to deplete all of its assets in order to pay for expenses outside of what is covered by insurance (or go bankrupt), e.g., because of a rare disease or severe accident. Perhaps not, but life isn’t fair and why should the gov’t. force my family to cough up the assets we’ve worked for and saved. Another supporter who said she was a fed employee covered by gov’t insurance is waiting on a lung transplant and needs treatments that cost $9,000/mo until then. While I agree that costs are too high, once again, I’ve had family members who had to pay off hospital bills without asking for a dime from the gov’t. My sister had twin babies who spent their first month in Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. They had no insurance at the time and worked out a plan with the hospital and paid back every dime. She owns her own business now. Other family members who’ve had accidents and insurance and still ended up with high medical bills as their portion were helped out by benefits held by neighbors in their community. I overheard the son of the woman awaiting the transplant remark that if he gets $1 from the government, that’s $1 more than what he had. Where does he think the government gets the $1? He was wearing an Obama golf shirt.

Currently, I am supporting Dr. Stan Cooke’s bid for election to U.S. Congress District 6. I’d like to see Bachus lose his seat to a real conservative.
