I saw it yesterday, in IMAX. Absolutely stunning, loved it. What really bugs me is I keep seeing reviews by hope'n'changey liberal writers that talk about Star Trek's diversity and refer the series as showing a hopeful, "utopian" future. Utopian? Give me a break. Creatures are still at war with each other. They destroy whole planets and their populations (inadvertantly or intentionally). They beat the living daylights out of each other and kill each other. How is that utopian? Only in the warped reality of a liberal mind.

Also, Newsweek has a comparison of Star Wars/Star Trek to the Bush/Obama administrations (http://www.newsweek.com/id/195414) in which Obama is compared to Spock. I've always suspected that the Vulcans were a representation of the Jews (Nimoy's use of the "live long and prosper" hand sign), and I think the new movie confirms that (6 million Vulcans killed with on 10,000 surviving). How can that relate in any way to Barack Obama, who is destroying our relationship with the Israelis in favor of appeasing Islam?

to go see it. My sticking point was the alternate timeline/parallel universe subplot I had heard about. Frankly, that's a plot device that has been overdone by the franchise IMO. It was OK in "Mirror, Mirror" from the original series and "The Voyage Home" but after that I think they let it get a little out of hand, especially in DS9, which I generally liked otherwise. The brief glimpse of what Earth would have been like had the Borg been able to stop Zefram Cochran from making "First Contact" was OK, too, as was that whole movie, but those 3 instances were plenty for me.

But now my interest is piqued so I'm going to give it a chance, possibly tomorrow. Plus it'd be interesting to see the Enterprise lift off from Earth (That's not a spoiler, the shots of it being constructed on the planet's surface has been in most of the trailers).

I saw it last night and rate it as follows:

Casting: 10 out of 10
Storyline: 10 out of 10
Special effects: 10 out of 10
Tie-ins to the franchise: 10 out of 10
Understandibility for a "non-Trekee": 10 out of 10
Hotness of the actress who plays Uhura: 10 out of 10

I particularly liked Patrick Stewart in First Contact. He seems like an "actor's actor" to me. Also, he has the kind of British accent that makes him seem very intelligent. I know that sounds silly, but don't act like you don't think the same thing.
