I want to become infected with the Swine Flu

From the diaries by Erick

The highly irrational response to the Swine flu pandemic illustrates the ratings principle that fear and crisis boosts television ratings and newspaper and magazine sales.  Think of the weatherman and a snowfall that never appears, or appears at a quarter of the reported snowfall.

I want the Swine Flu because as far as I can tell, the mortality rates are equal to or less than regular flu.

And I want the immunities that getting the flu will give me, and I hope my whole family gets it too.

This will protect me in the future — from the inevitable mutations of this new flu.

The most creative political response to the flu I’ve scene so far is from the Muslim Egyptian government: let’s use the Swine Flu to get rid of all those pesky Christian’s pigs.

However, in the main, the life-sucking-hand-wringers have struck again — in the form of the new HHS Secretary and the new Secretary of Homeland Security live press conferences designed to panic the fearful-we-want-to-be-risk-free-American population.

Here’s a thought: Dude, COWBOY UP!

The other big problem is that if and when something that we really need to be concerned about posts on the global scene, like the a mutated bird flu with a mortality rate of north of 60% for humans, the current crying-and-wailing-wolf exercise will cause warnings about a serious threat to fall on deaf ears.

The entire media-elite response reminds me of children at a friend’s house during a thunderstorm — do you think we will have to sleepover because the storm is so bad?

No, bring on the Swine Flu.  Hopefully it will come to Washington, D.C. soon, where I can get infected to add antibodies to my immunity system.

If I don’t get it soon, I think I’ll book a flight to Mexico and do a build-your-immunity-tour to Mexican pig farms.

And if you are wondering why the border with Mexico is not closed, it is really simple, once 30 people become infected with a new contagion like the Swine Flu, it is too late to close the border.

To be honest...

I think my whole family just went through 2 weeks of it going through our house ( I have a lot of kids, more than 5). Anyway, I wonder if there’s any way to test for it after the fact. If so I wonder how many “cases” USA would jump to because of the fact that most people here are already used to just keeping hydrated and fighting the symptoms until they go away.

Time for a politically correct flu name

jackbenimble (Diary) Thursday, April 30th at 11:54AM EST (link)

I’m not at all comfortable that the name “swine flu” is adequately politically correct. It also does not seem to be correct from a taxology perspective either because I have repeatedly read that it is a new virus combined from bits and pieces or swine flu AND human flu and avian flu. I have not actually read of a single pig that has caught the N1H1 virus so to continue to call it the swine flu is an insult to and an unfair defamation of hogs everywhere.

Further, just think how your family would feel if you were Jewish, or Muslim, or even Hindu and you were sickened or died from the swine flu! It might keep you out of Paradise and it would certainly be a major embarrassment which could even precipitate some honor killings of sick people who might otherwise recover. As is noted in the diary above, it has already resulted in a pig holocaust in parts of the Muslim world that has to have the PETA crowd riled.

Historically, we have often named flu’s after their country of origin like the Hong Kong Flu or the Spanish Flu or the Taiwan Flu. But apparently in this modern politically correct day, Mexican Flu is not acceptable. Maybe people think it might be mistaken for some odd past tense version of the proper noun, Spanish Fly? It might then be sought after like Viagra.

Somewhere I saw somebody propose that it be called the “Undocumented Flu”. “Undocumented” is pretty close to the height of politically correct terminology and most people understand it as code for Mexican so I think I am pretty comfortable with that. And since it is a new flu that has never previously been documented, that also fits. And, their is a very good chance that it will be spread, if it has not already occurred, by undocumented immigrants.

In the best tradition of recognizing the multicultural sensibilities of our friends and neighbors across the globe, I think it should be re-named the Undocumented Flu.

A questionable assumption

This will protect me in the future — from the inevitable mutations of this new flu

The reason that a new and different flu vaccination is developed every year is that influenza viruses are frequently mutating and having had a particular infection of the virus DOES NOT necessarily give you immunity from future mutations of the virus.

It might give you some antibodies that protect you from a future mutation or it might make your illness less severe. But then again it might not. It is a crapshoot.

Personally, I never try to get sick. I’ll wait for the vaccine and hope I am able to avoid the flu until then. Unfortunately my Secretary just took a trip with her church to Juarez to build housing last Friday before the news broke. I’m going to ask her to stay home from the office for a few days when she gets back.

We need to build the Human Herd Immunity to Swine Flu

Dan Perrin (Diary) Thursday, April 30th at 5:47PM EST (link)

Quoting below an excerpt from a news report about a Houston physician’s email on the wide spread nature of the Swine Flu:

“Since it is such a novel (new) virus, there is no ‘herd immunity,’ so the ‘attack rate’ is very high. This is the percentage of people who come down with a virus if exposed. Almost everyone who is exposed to this virus will become infected, though not all will be symptomatic. That is much higher than seasonal flu, which averages 10-15%. The ‘clinical attack rate’ estimation from CDC and WHO may be around 40-50%. This is the number of people who show symptoms. This is a huge number. It is hard to convey the seriousness of this to those outside of the medical fields, he writes.”

Almost half will show symptoms, so stand by, and if you get sick with symptoms, you should know you are building the Human Herd Immunity.

The high ‘clinical attack rate’ is also why efforts to stem its spread will largely fail.

I bet I got swine flu right now

kyle8 (Diary) Thursday, April 30th at 5:51PM EST (link)

I live in Houston, and I have been hacking and coughing for two weeks now, I had to miss some work for being weak as a kitten and I still haven’t been able to knock this cough.

But I seen worse.

This was sent to me from someone in Europe. Can this be true?

>
> Dr. Horowitz: Anglo-American Vaccine Industry Behind Swine Flu Outbreak
> This unprecedented H1N1-H5N1 flu outbreak implicates the Ango-American Vaccine Pipeline, says world leading consumer health protector, Dr. Leonard Horowitz.
> Consider the skyrocketing stock values of Novavax, Inc., precipitated by dozens of alleged flu deaths in Mexico. Then investigate the leading Anglo-American network of genetic engineers manipulating, mutating, and distributing these viruses. The evidence compels you, for the benefit of public health and safety to seriously consider, even decree, a conspiracy to commit genocide, according to this Harvard trained expert in emerging diseases.
> Here, Dr. Horowitz urges an investigation of Dr. James S. Robertson, Englands leading bioengineer of flu viruses for the vaccine industry, and avid promoter of U.S. Government funding for lucrative biodefense contracts, along with collaborators at the US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). These suspects helped Novavax, Inc., in Bethesda, Maryland, produce genetically-modified recombinants of the avian, swine, and Spanish flu viruses, H5N1 and H1N1, nearly identical to the unprecedented Mexican virus that is allegedly spreading to the United States at the time of this posting. The outbreak was precisely timed to promote the companys new research and huge vaccine stockpiling contracts.
> Scientists at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are implicated through collaborations and publications involving private contracts with Novavax, a company that obtains its biosimulars through CDC Influenza Branch director, Ruben O. Donis, and Dr. Rick Bright, previously working with Donis at the CDC, now Novavaxs Vice President of Global Influenza Programs.
> Descriptions of this virus is pathognomonic, or diagnostic, of a virus that came from Robertsons circle of friends, Dr. Horowitz charges. No other group in the world takes H5N1 Asian flu infected chickens, brings them to Europe, extracts their DNA, combines their proteins with H1N1 viruses from the 1918 Spanish flu isolate, additionally mixes in swine flu genes from pigs, then reverse engineers them to infect humans. The end product could only have ended up in Mexico via the United States from Britain in care of the CDC. The CDC had to have sent them to Novavax, where Rick Brights team is now implicated in a conspiracy to commit genocide—the mass killing of people for profit.

As usual in these kinds of conspiracy theories, the author of the e-mail is extrapolating quite a bit from rather limited data and correlations.

First, I would think one would have to do genetic tracking (like they would with anthrax) and see if there is an exact match. If the genetic fingerprints match, then there may be something worth looking into further. You also have to prove deliberate intent rather than negligence.

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

Human Exposure will Build Human Resistance to Swine Flu

Dan Perrin (Diary) Thursday, April 30th at 5:20PM EST (link)

Just heard of a Swine Flu case in Washington, D.C. — nice. The continued over-reaction is amusing, especially when the LA Times front page story is “Scientists see this flu strain as relatively mild,” which is my point exactly.

Catch it, get it over with, and move on.
