The Right To Surf

The Heartbreak of Dial-Up

Meet John Smith. John is a surfer by trade. He dreams of competitive surfing; his walls are decorated with posters of famous surfers. But he has just one problem: here in his home town of Dubuque, Iowa, he can only surf small streams and brooks. “Sometimes, I just stand there on my board, waiting and waiting for some kid to throw a rock so I can have a ripple to surf on,” says Smith, a vacant, far-away look coming into his grey eyes. “I bring a book with me to kill time. It’s sad and frustrating. We don’t have access to high-speed, high-volume waves here in Dubuque. My kids ask me when we’re going to get them. I tell them, I just don’t know.”

But help is on the way: the Obama Administration promises to use billions of dollars in stimulus funds to build professional-quality wave machines in every zip code by 2014, to help connect surfers like John Smith to the world wide wave culture.

Seriously, this CNN sob story about lack of high-speed internet access in some markets is not much better. We’d all like to see more high-speed broadband, but since when is it a right guaranteed by the federal government? And is Uncle Sam really not spending enough money already on things we might want but don’t need?

Broadband in Stimulus Package

kmacwayne (Diary) Tuesday, March 16th at 3:59PM EST (link)

The stimulus package committed dollars to put broadband in “rural areas” – “rural areas to be defined…..”
Was a long time ago that I looked at it – but it also seemed that money was allocated to rural area broadband for hospital and doctor reporting of medical records – it’s all connected and has been connected since well before O was elected

Are Detroit and Flint MI...

Broadband in Kansas

jah666 (Diary) Tuesday, March 16th at 4:57PM EST (link)

Most rural states already have federally -funded broadband access programs for schools and medical facilities. In Kansas ours is called the KanEd program. It is currently in its second contractual incarnation and seems to work quite well. I think what Obama the Statist has in mind is to have the FedGov underwrite broadband access networks for the citizenry of low-population rural areas of the US. I guess some areas still don’t have broadband access from their local telephone company or cable television company. Those two capitalistic concerns figured out over a decade ago that selling internet access to their customers would be a decent revenue stream. It works out real well for the providers and customers here in rural southwest Kansas. Of course, Obama doesn’t believe that anybody should have to pay for ANYTHING. That goes against his Marxist dreams.

So move

southernilpat Tuesday, March 16th at 5:09PM EST (link)

“Of these non-adopters, 12 percent say they cannot get broadband
where they live. This translates into a 4 percent share
of Americans—on the basis of their reports on infrastructure
availability in their neighborhood—who say they are unable to
obtain broadband because it is not available.” http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-296442A1.pdf

If you choose to live in the 4 percent of the US that can’t get broadband, that is your choice. This translates into a crisis for the rest of us how? Seems like the vast majority of those without high speed internet access have chosen not to have it, for whatever reason. Should they be forced to get it, just like they will be forced to have health insurance whether they want it or not?

I need a 4-car garage

GT350 Tuesday, March 16th at 5:58PM EST (link)

I live in the San Francisco bay area, maybe the most bloody expensive metro areas to live in. I am fortunate to own a home, but one of the compromises I endure is a shortage of physical space. On the other hand, there is excellent broadband coverage.

Unfortunately, this compromise impairs my ability to pursue a hobby in the automotive arts. If I lived in an inexpensive rural area, I bet I could afford a large plot of land. Then I could buy or build a large barn, where I can work on my cars to my heart’s content. I could afford the space for a welding shop and a 4-post lift. I could keep various parts cars in the yard behind the barn, where my neighbors (and my wife) won’t see them. Since my love of old Corvettes and Mustangs is a financial black hole, I am also a net contributor to GDP through the (mostly domestic) auto restoration industry.

Sadly, I am unable to pursue this dream, simply because of my geographic location. If only the Obama administration would do something to relieve my burden, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

I am also in the market for a pony.

In addition

southernilpat Tuesday, March 16th at 7:01PM EST (link)

Your neighbor, who rides a bicycle to work and doesn’t even own a car, must also have a 4 car garage because it just wouldn’t be FAIR for you to have more then he. The rest of us, who have chosen to live within our means and only own enough cars to fit in the garages we already own, must of course subsidize this.

Or lease your chimney to a wireless broadband shop...

acat (Diary) Tuesday, March 16th at 7:00PM EST (link)

Buddy of mine lives just east of the middle of nowhere – nothing west but corn and soybeans until you get to Iowa, not that things change much at the border.

Anyway, he couldn’t get broadband, no cable, no DSL. He finally figured out that he could lease his chimney and part of a ground floor closet to a wireless broadband shop – they dropped a fat cable to his home, UPS and some gear in the (now locked) closet, and an antenna on his chimney.

He gets broadband as part of the lease, and his neigbors now get access to broadband. He’s something of a neighborhood hero.

Anyone who says they “can’t get broadband” aren’t really trying – but moving isn’t the only possible answer.

No, it's not

southernilpat Tuesday, March 16th at 7:04PM EST (link)

And neither is forcing everyone else to pay for it. The point is the same: it is the responsibility of the individual to find a way to get what he wants.

Whats wrong with satellite ?

jimc1969 Tuesday, March 16th at 5:09PM EST (link)

I have to imagine you can get high speed internet via satellite dish ? If not now, certainly in the near future ?

Technically, sorta...

acat (Diary) Tuesday, March 16th at 7:03PM EST (link)

Technically, satellite is high speed download but low speed upload because upload is still using a phone line.

Also, the latency is terrible because of the distances involved getting up to the sat and back, so it’s near-useless for true real-time gaming.

It’s great for streaming movies, though.

A number of VPNs don't work with satellite

Bill S (Diary) Wednesday, March 17th at 1:21AM EST (link)

Some VPN software is sensitive to the propagation delays that come with satellite comms.

Per the message in Dan’s diary and some of the comments: it is incumbent upon the individual to live in a location that has the facilities they require. If one needs HSIA, move somewhere that provides it.

Yet another example of Nanny Statism.

What about me?

romans12n2 (Diary) Tuesday, March 16th at 10:29PM EST (link)

I live in rural Orange Co NC and I can’t get cable and I can’t afford a laptop and wireless right now. ( busy payinf for necessities) Will the MESSiyah make Time Warner come the extra 1/4 mile to my house so I don’t have to use DSL?
BTW, of that 4% they’re not without internet access, just w/o “high speed”.
And for Mr. Smith , there may be hope ! When The One seizes and regulates the use and purpose designation of ALL waters in and around the US, maybe He will designate one of the Iowa streams as a surfing body.I mean surely the laws of nature will surely bend themselves to his will and water will flow back upstream to where Mr. Smith wants to surf ( If he is a union rep and Obama supporter). According to , was is NYT or Time that put him in front of the cross?

I think it's time to start pushing for an amendment to the constitution

Next93 (Diary) Tuesday, March 16th at 11:11PM EST (link)

I never thought it would come to this, but I think conservatives need to start pushing for an amendment that states in the clearest possible terms that no one has a right to take the work of any other person. Period. Or, to put it another way, that the government does not have the power to take the labor of one person and give it to another, either directly or indirectly.

That means health care, it means broadband, it means medicare, it means welfare, and, yes, it means ponies.

I realize this has zero chance of passing, but I think it’s about time conservatives started fighting for an ideal. Or, to quote Animal House, “what’s needed here is a really stupid and meaningless gesture on somebody’s part”

Obama was The One in 2008.
He’ll be a BIGGER one in 2012.
