If it's unethical or immoral to use taxpayer dollars to pay for someone else's abortion, shouldn't it also be immoral and unethical to use someone's hard-earned dollars to pay for someone else's health insurance?

He won't vote for the bill without a Stupak-type amendment. Together with Lieberman that makes two votes against cloture.

To win over Lieberman, the Senate might eliminate the public option and go for a trigger. But there's no way the Senate will go pro-life. This puts the bill in jeopardy when it goes back to the House.

It's hard to imagine how they get out of this quandary.

The House won't pass the bill without the amendment. If that's the reality, the Senate must join suit if it wants a bill. The mere fact that the issue has been raised at all changes the dynamics of what's being attempted. It's hard to imagine somebody like Lincoln voting for this now that the public is aware of the stakes vis a vis the contentious abortion fight. It puts her in a terrific bind with her constituents. Ditto for Bob Casey. It casts the whole health care debate in a different light.

Eliminate a large portion in the womb

Put anyone who won't buy an insurance policy in jail

...and who will the Democrats have left?

I think this will pass with the Stupak amendment for the following reason: we are not making abortion illegal. Pro abortion legislators are not giving anything up. It is a lot more difficult to get someone who is truly convicted that abortion is the taking of an innocent life to go against what is a deep seated moral conviction. On the other hand, the pro abortion side is not giving anything up. They are just not getting another entitlement paid for in this round.

Rest assured this bill will not self destruct on this issue.

Meanwhile the Democrats contimue with the Junta.

...In the House, and make it more likely to pass in the Senate.

No self-respecting Leftie is going to vote against Single Player just because Stupak is in it. I don't ever see it happening, and I'll only believe it when I see it. Lynn Woolsey and Barbara Boxer types are blowing smoke.

The GOP better get to work on hitting this bill for its $3 trillion price tag, and its provisions to put 'dissenters' in jail, because the way this abortion thing is playing out is making it easier and easier for Red State Dems to vote for final passage, regardless of all the wailing from irrelevant NARAL and their ilk...

Conservatives are deluding themselves if they think the abortion issue is going to sink this bill. It's not a silver bullet.

We've already seen that Democrats are willing to put restrictions on funding for abortion in order to pass Universal Health Care from the House vote. The abortion fundamentalists will give them a pass. Socialized medicine is a much more important battle.

I can guarantee you, if Democrats count the votes and see that they need some pro-life language in this bill in order to pass it, they will. There are not going to let this once in a lifetime opportunity pass over such a small issue. Democrats will play Kabuki and pretend to be outraged and that they're making a huge concession, but they'll be laughing on the inside.

In fact, most Democrats would prefer to have the restrictions on abortion funding because there will be less backlash, it also would "keep" Obama's promise he made.

At best, banning public funds for abortion in a health care bill is a step sideways for the pro-life movement since we already have the Hyde Amendment for Medicaid abortion coverage. It certainly isn't a step forward for the pro-life movement, especially since public assistance for abortion will inevitably follow any universal health care.

We hit them on abortion. We hit them on the deficit. We hit them on freedom of choice. We hit them on bureaucratic delays and failures. We hit them on lies. We don't pull any punches.

1) I have no faith that when push comes to shove, the pro-choice Dems will put principle over policy and vote against the conference bill if the abortion restriction is removed from the bill. It may happen, but considering past behavior, such a hope falls close to "pipe dream" status.

2) Erick's thread from earlier today is important. The fight against this abomination has to be a fight over freedom from overreaching government, not just abortion.

I don't see how they pass it with or without the Stupak Amendment.

For all those that opposed that amendment, BTW, they should now see that it's actually due to the passing of that amendment that the Health Care bill will fail.
