So does this mean Obama isn’t watching the world series (being a dirty communist and all)? Oh wait, he must be watching since he said he’s cheering for the Phillies…I mean Rays…or was it the Phillies? I guess it depends on what state he’s in tonight! LOL!!

I am studying for a midterm (ugh). On computer architecture (UGH). And I go to school in Philly, so I should be at a bar somewhere cheering ([scream of agony]).

Dude. Radio.

One of my most vivid college memories

Bill S (Diary) Wednesday, October 22nd at 11:01PM EST (link)

is of the night of the 7th game of the 1982 World Series. I was studying for a midterm in the student commons at Univ of MO. I peeked at the little portable TV that the gal working at the register was watching, so I was able to watch the Cardinals win Game 7 out of one eye while studying with the other. Columbia, MO went nuts that night, after the Cardinals won. I’ll never forget that night.

There, I said it. I didn’t want to say it, but it had to be said.

radio? was this in the 1930s? were the Brookyln Dodgers playing the Philadelphia Athletics? did you go to the local malt store afterwards and listen to FDR's fireside chats about controlling the hun menace?

People will come, Ray. They’ll come to Iowa for reasons they can’t even fathom. They’ll turn up your driveway, not knowing for sure why they’re doing it. They’ll arrive at your door, innocent as children, longing for the past. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It’s been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again. Oh, people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come.
– Terrence Mann, from the film Field of Dreams

The beauty of being so young, and watching my Royals beat the cross-state Cardinals. Ahhh, it could bring a tear to a glass eye.

Oh, sorry…you were saying?

Great movie!

“Field of Dreams” has a special place in my heart. It was Christmas time in 1990. My wife and I were on an airplane to Santiago Chile, to finally meet the baby girl we had been trying to adopt for about 2 years.

We had tried for 7 years to conceive. We tried everything…from scheduling sex by reading basal body temperatures to very expensive in vitro procedures. We finally spent another couple of years figuring out how to adopt a child, then going through the process.

Finally, we were actually on our way on a 14 hour trip to Santiago to pick up our new daughter. It was the middle of the night on a crowded plane, but everyone was sleeping.

Well everyone but me, because I was suddenly wide awake and filled with thoughts that boiled down to “What the hell am I DOING?” I don’t know anything about having a baby. I don’t know anything about South America. I don’t know anything about this attorney I have paid $10,000 dollars to. What the hell am I DOING?”

So anyway, for some inexplicable reason, suddenly the movie screen comes on and “Field of Dreams” was the show. I started to watch it just to distract myself.

I get that it may be a corny movie, but the message of having faith in the unknown future was exactly what I needed to hear.

She was (and is ) beautiful, and she is 19 and supporting herself now-her choice and I am proud to know her.

Merriam-Webster:

base·ball
Pronunciation:
\?b?s-?bo?l\
a game played with a bat and ball between two teams of nine players each on a large field having four bases that mark the course a runner must take to score ; also : the ball used in this game

As far as I’m concerned, the Phillies are already the champs.

You are correct sir.

Whenever I’m at a game I’m usually thinking about whether I should get nachos & soda or pizza and beer.

I love the game, but it’s one of the few things I’d rather watch on T.V. than in person.

the national pastime is football

kyle8 (Diary) Thursday, October 23rd at 4:56AM EST (link)

Sure baseball has a certain quaint, nostalgic appeal. I can download a database, cook a meal, eat it, do the laundry, and still see most of the action in an average game just by looking up whenever I hear the crowd.

Let’s face it, it’s a pretty boring sport by today’s standards. Sure it can be fun when the games really mean something, like during the playoffs, but 160 games in the season is just way too much.

Football, especially college football is the real sport of excitement, hard hitting action, and deep strategy.

If Obama gets elected, he will do everything in his power to make soccer (but will force Americans to call it “futbal’) as America’s pastime so that the rest of the world likes us again. Because God knows how much they loved us when Carter and Clinton were in the Oval Office.

Voting for Obama so that the rest of the world will like Americans again is like the NY Yankees deciding to not sign a big name player so that Red Sox fans will like them again.

game 6

ohiobeagle Thursday, October 23rd at 6:02AM EST (link)

Please, please, please let their be a game 6 so that Obamoron can delay its start with his 1/2 hour propaganda show.

Radio is still THE way to experience baseball.

NightTwister (Diary) Thursday, October 23rd at 7:32AM EST (link)

If you can’t see it in person, that is. Even when I watch on TV, I try to find the audio from radio.

I still remember my mom would have the game on every day in the summer when I was home. My first recollection of the game was Bobby Bonds’ first game in the majors. He hit a grand slam in his first at-bat.

The Amazins played baseball. The D-Rays spent most of the year playing some other game that involves 10 players per team.

Joe Biden

They didn’t have Joe Biden comment on this because he would have said…”My dad & I used to watch Babe Ruth play ball on ESPN. He was a great player and my favorite game was when the Babe beat Mark McGuire’s home run record.”

I want this series to only go five games so that The One will not hook all of those people who tune in to watch Game Six into his 1/2 hour propaganda manifesto.

P.S. – - being a Mariners fan I have to go with Philly this time for the sake of one of my all time favorite players, Jamie Moyer.
