This is a follow up to an earlier post on my blog Diddling Dave, Don Imus, and The Media:
Tonight, Dave Letterman explained his “jokes” about Sarah Palin’s daughter…
“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]… and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight’s show. “These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl…. Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No.” Saying he hopes he’s “cleared part of this up,” Letterman extended an invitation to Palin to come on the show as a guest.
Pathetic. Way to not man up David. This fails miserably on several levels:
1. His writers got the items for this stand up drive-by hit on Palin’s daughter from news accounts. There were no mentions of Bristol, the 18 year old daughter, being with Sarah Palin in New York. So…
2. At worst it was definitely about sliming the 14 year old Willow Palin.
3. At best, Letterman was willing to use Willow as a foil for sliming Bristol… but content to let anyone out there who “didn’t get it” think it was about Willow.
4. So making jokes about raping an 18 year old single mother of a new born is OK?
5. As I said, this explanation by Letterman fails miserably, and…
Letterman fails miserably as a human being… more like a worm.

There are other places, we need to think outside the box and come up with ideas on our own. Of course it would be cool if RS got organized, but mostly we will just get diaries.

Doc Holliday (Diary) Thursday, June 11th at 3:06AM EST (link)and boycott Letterman’s tv sponsors. This is a change from what I said last night about local channels, I was trying to use what worked in a specific battle over 2A rights, a battle with a newspaper/online news site.
We need to shame the sponsors of his show, at least that is my opinion. Of course talk is cheap and it will take work to get this going. I bet someone else is onto this, we conservatives just need to contact each other and focus the effort.

securitymom (Diary) Thursday, June 11th at 12:15PM EST (link)Worm. That being said, even if he were to “man up” it doesn’t alleviate the fact he thought it was appropriate to continue to berate Gov Palin, and her family.
Having worked for 20 years on children’s issues (focus on child exploitiation), I am completely saddened by this. The silence by women’s and children’s groups is appalling.
BTW I have founded two non-profits, and I am more than willing to help create another one. Just contact me.

Dadai (Diary) Thursday, June 11th at 1:04PM EST (link)Yes, the silence is deafening from the the various advocacy groups and MSM (remember the outcries when Don Imus called Rutger’s women’s BB team “hos”?).
My remark about Letterman, “way to man up”, is not to imply that if he had apologized that would remove the damage or the intent of his remarks. As my further comments show, he meant to say what he said knowing Willow was the daughter who was with Gov. Palin. No apology would have changed the facts of that. His pitiful “explanation” was, I’m sure, required as damage control due to the vast amount of negative responses that had been going directly to CBS.
By the way, as one with three daughters and seven grandchildren, as well as a number of years in helping others in family counseling situations… this kind of stuff boils my blood.
