I used to respect Chris Matthews for being a liberal who was interested in both sides of an argument. Over the last couple of years, as Matthews has become increasingly blinded by his crush on Barack Obama, my respect for the Hardball host has faded. However, it was not until last night that I sadly realized that Matthews had become unhinged from reality. I only watched the first ten minutes of Hardball last night, but that was long enough to learn that
1) Matthews believes that right wing hatred of Democratic presidents is so pernicious that it’s even responsible for John F. Kennedy’s assassination by avowed Communist Lee Harvey Oswald:
What is it about the zeitgeist, the atmosphere in the air, in that case, very virulently right- wing hatred of Jack Kennedy, that may have sprung or triggered even a left- winger like Oswald to do what he did? … A communist sympathizer like Lee Harvey Oswald … kills in the atmosphere of a right-wing hatred of a lefty.
2) Matthews considers what Rep. Joe Wilson did – or standing outside a town hall meeting with a gun or anti-Obama sign – akin to assassinating the president:
What is it that triggers? Is it the sense that the whole atmosphere is, this guy is not legitimate, the guy I’m about to shoot or the guy I’m about to humiliate with carrying a gun or with a sign or yelling out, “You lie.”
3) Matthews has no memory of the left-wing protest signs and cartoons that portrayed George W. Bush as a chimpanzee and compared him to Hitler and the Nazis:
You can go to a rally and hold up a sign talking about the man in the White House being some kind of animal, that he’s a Hitler guy, the fact that somebody would know they can get away with carrying a sign like that without being shunned, pushed aside, even beaten up, tells me there’s a license out there. … You wouldn’t hold up a sign like that a few months ago.

You would think that with the departure of the devil Bush that there would be something of a calming period. Just the opposite, liberals[?] are going raving mad at an even faster rate then before.
It manages to be both insane and vicious that Matthews, always wordy, never bright, should say what he did. Trouble is that it’s not out of step with the rest of the deranged filth coming from the left as they stumble down the road of collective lunacy.
Add it up, we are facing some interesting but very dangerous and threatening times.

Racist Democrat Monday, September 21st at 10:52AM EST (link)The only rationale that I can attribute to Mattews is that he backs what he perceives as the winning side, hoping that he will be rewarded by these traitors at some time in the future. “Don’t make waves, don’t rock the boat, don’t back any losers.” His attitude is, ‘See, I’m on your side.’
Trouble is, he PROVES that he is a LOSER because he can’t rise up by himself without help from the thugs. Matthews is a sellout to whoever is in power at the time. He WILL receive his just reward but it won’t be what he expects. Rabbit-ears Obonga eventually throws these pawns under the bus when he no longer needs them.

Incredible (Diary) Friday, September 18th at 5:30PM EST (link)Five years ago or more, Chris Matthews was the only Left-Wing show that I watched. You are right that he has completely lost his mind. I caught it a few years ago.
On the larger topic, and this post is part of the back-up, it is my opinion that it is time to ignore the Past Tense Media. They are irrelevant. What purpose do they serve?
While they have been losing market-share, viewership, readership, profits, et cetera for years, their coffin has been finally and firmly nailed shut. Their slanted reporting was chronicled in books by Ann Coulter and others. They were useless shills during the election. They blew in after-the-fact on the Van Jones firing. Jon Stewart openly mocked them for missing the ACORN story.
It is time that we stopped mocking them in their slide into oblivion. They are firmly in oblivion. Forget them.

Several problems with this statement:
1. It’s truthfulness is very doubtful. The evidence seems to be that most of the Obama=Hitler signs that have appeared were not actually carried by conservatives and I haven’t seen anything to suggest that such attitudes have been embraced by mainstream conservatives and I would think that people carrying such signs are probably not real popular. The discussion on conservative websites, and from elected Republicans has conveyed the message that such tactics were not appropriate. He doesn’t present any evidence to support his claim that such people are not shunned.
Unless Matthews is suggesting that such people should be placed on a McCarthy-like black list.
2.Unless Matthews qualifies this with some disclaimer at another point in the interview he seems to be promoting the notion that pushing someone aside or even beating them up is an acceptable reaction to them carrying a sign you find offensive. This is a lot closer to “inciting violence” than any of the things Rush or O’Reilly have ever said.
Wasn’t it Nancy Pelosi who just said – it was neccessary to keep in mind that those who are listening may be unbalanced…
I’m not going so far as to call this inciting violence – I expect it wouldn’t meet the threshold – I’m just pointing out that by left wing standards it would definitely qualify.
Maybe their excuse for such hypocrisy iis that Democrats are too well balanced to become violent (never mind that guy who bit off an old man’s finger) while Rightwingers are just naturally prone to it. So only Republicans should be censored…

By that definition, most ranking Republicans of that day were liberals as well. We tend to look at the Southerners of that day as conservative but they weren’t in a philosophical sense, the South was never much troubled by the idea of state intervention. What the Southerners of the day were was cheap and racist; the states were still quite poor and the whites weren’t about to spend money on anything that they thought might benefit blacks. The West was more libertarian than conservative or Republcan and Goldwater was a pretty typical westerner of either party actually.
On national defense and economics, JFK was more conservative than even most of the Republican leadership today and wouldn’t be able to be a precinct captain in the Democrat Party.

I’ll admit that much of the “states rights” movement had a racial component, but I think you’d find that Sowell and Williams would agree that the cure was worse than the disease.
As for JFK, if you remember, he ran as a more staunch “defense” candidate than Nixon. There was so little US currency that he’d been paid for his timber sales in company script and while he was sure that the Central of Georgia Railroad would take the script, he was afraid that when he got to the school, they wouldn’t honor the script. Achance (Diary) Saturday, September 19th at 12:17AM EST (link)Really the only theory that makes sense is that JFK ran out of chits with the mob. When it came to Cuba, you couldn’t draw a line to establish where the CIA ended and the Mafia begain. Throw in some KGB influence in CIA and State to make the US do stupid stuff.
The Kennedys and the Mob weren’t strangers, in fact at one time were business partners. The Mob took care of JFK’s indiscretions, with their union friends won the WV primary for him, served up some of their finest women to him, and on, and on.
Then, when the mob needed a “great service,” in keeping their very valuable and profitable property in Cuba, JFK left them holding the bag. Even without all they’d done for him, that kind of money is worth killing somebody over.
Look at what RFK did after JFK’s death; went after the mob as AG. Some stories make too much sense not to be true. Soviets didn’t need to kill him; they had his measure. Right wing didn’t need to kill him; he wasn’t very effective. Cubans probably didn’t have the means to kill him, though some surely would have wanted to. Cui bono? The Mafia.

As I recall, the Birchers turned their ire mostly to the Warren Court; I certainly remember “Impeach Earl Warren” billboards in those days. Texas had a contingent of Minutemen (sixties version) and Patriots in Action and the Kennedys did come down on them pretty hard. The Hunts supported the PIA and when RFK ran them to ground, N. B. Hunt financed moving a bunch of them to Alaska. Interestingly, the Attwood Building, State government headquarters in Anchorage, was built as the Hunt Building by N. B. Hunt. They tried back then to link the Right to JFK’s assassination and in that climate, if they could have, they would have. LBJ was losing the whole South for the Democrats and rounding up some Southern vast right wing conspiracy would have warmed the cockles of his black heart. Certainly, RFK had no love for the Right and he didn’t do much of anything to try to run anyone to ground – I think because he knew why his brother was offed.
I was in high school band at the time and we had a Thanksgiving/Christmas parade in a neighboring town on the evening of Nov. 22, 1963, the events in Dallas didn’t cause it to be cancelled and didn’t really seem to dampen the spirits. There was no love for JFK in The South but as I recall the political sense was that nobody wanted to provoke him and the federal government. The lessons from Eisenhower federalzing the Guard in Little Rock weren’t lost on people and the Klan never was either as influential or as large as it was made out to be by the Left.

I remember thinking something along the lines of
Achance (Diary) Saturday, September 19th at 1:32PM EST (link)“I wonder if it was the Klan or the KGB.” I don’t recall anybody around me being very conscious of the right wing groups other than the Birchers. While the Klan espoused anti-communism etc., the Klan was about race – period and everyone knew it. The Klan was pumped up as some fearsome thing by a city and Yankee media that didn’t really know anything about them. By those days, they were comprised mostly of the lower class and emotionally disturbed, white trash in Southern vernacular, and led by middling merchants or farmers that were a little smarter than the rest. In some places, they had some influence over the sheriff, in some the sheriff was a Klansman, but the Klan was generally looked down on, if feared a bit. Only the largest towns and cities had much of a standing police force. In the rural areas, the Sheriff and maybe a deputy or two would be “the law” for a whole county. If they needed to apprehend someone, it was very common for them to deputize a posse, just like in western movies, and go looking for the perp. And since, that perp was likely to be Black, a lot of Klan mythology sprang from the perfectly legal actions of citizen posses. Don’t get me wrong, there were plenty of bad things done to both blacks and whites, especially poor whites, but Southern sheriffs; I know one Deputy Sheriff that if given the opportunity I’d pay for the construction ofhis special place in Hell.
You have to remember also, that the Cuban Missle Crisis at the time was spun as a great victory for JFK, so it was easy to believe that the Soviets had taken action against him in retribution.

Plenty of race problems then, but a high regard for law and order.
Your take on the Klan and sheriffs is spot on. We had a few crosses burned around the area in my childhood, but it turned out that the fearsome Klan was no more than a few guys that hung around a service station. Our sheriff was pretty fair, but I ran into a few in my youth that were pretty far gone psychologically.
I really believe the South is as post-racial a place as you can find inthe country, not because of some higher moral leanings but simply because we have been forced to work through our problems – we actually live, work and play with each other down here. Of course we did that in my youth, but there was always pretty well drawn lines about who was allowed to be where. Those lines have simply vanished and socio-economic disctinctions are the driving force now.

One Out of Three Correct
tadcf Friday, September 18th at 11:18PM EST (link)First of all, get your nuances straight. Above all, Lee Harvey Oswald was a maniac, before he was anything. This is suggested by the fact that he tried to commit suicide when his application for Russian citizenship was denied. He was a communist in about the same way Charles Manson was an apostle of Christ–because he called himself one.
Second, Chris Mathews simply realizes there are some ‘unhinged’ people in the world–like Oswald–that are ready to make a martyr of themselves, even by grabbing somebody elses gun and making a decision (based on as little as possibly being told by God) to rid the planet of the the evil one. Not too hard to believe since 33% of conservatives in New Jersey (a strong Blue state) think Obama is, or might be, the Anti-Christ. How many do you think might believe that way in Red states. Therefore, to have some concern for violence is only common sense.
The third point is quite correct.
So personal responsibility and free speech are out the window, then?
aesthete (Diary) Saturday, September 19th at 12:22AM EST (link)Because, last I checked, the founding fathers didn’t think that the possibility of violence was a good reason for censorship. Concern for violence isn’t Matthews’ responsibility; that is the purview of law enforcement. Matthews’ mission, if he has one, is apparently to provide material for the mental masturbation sessions of the 3-4 liberals who tune in to his show. I suppose that beats S&M, but I wouldn’t call it “common sense”.
BTW, this may utterly shock you, but “crazy” and “Communist” aren’t mutually exclusive (see: Stalin, Mao, Hoxha, Pol Pot… eh, who am I kidding? Put ‘em all on that list.)

That was his reason to exist, that was his personal philosophy, and for you to try and distance yourself from him is pathetic and lame. He is the left’s through and through. It is something you need to deal with, because there is no getting around it.
Second, Chris Mathews is only concerned about the effect that the protests have on Obama, the president he is determined to serve and whose success he has publicly pledged to strive for. He only wants silence from Obama’s opposition, and will do or say anything to achieve that. As cookcountyconservative points out below, Mathews no longer has the mental capacity to host an original thought. To think that Mathews is performing some public service is laughable.
Try again, hopefully somewhere else. Your desperation is showing.

Oh really?
SteveLA (Diary) Saturday, September 19th at 12:26PM EST (link)From what I rad Oswald was more a crazy man than anything else. Communism was just one of the crazy things he did which led up to the assassination of Kennedy. To ascribe his action to him being a communist probably does not wash, but we’ll never know because of Jack Ruby’s actions.

What part of his life did NOT revolve around his fascination with Communism?
Jack_Savage (Diary) Saturday, September 19th at 12:58PM EST (link)And I think ascribing his actions to being a Communist fits in perfectly with Kennedy’s stands against Communism. I sure as hell don’t think he killed Kennedy because he was a secret right-winger or because of some “climate” that Mathews tries to blame.

nessa (Diary) Saturday, September 19th at 1:54PM EST (link)…I think its also true that the leftist media is setting the conditions, or “prepping the battlefield” if you will. The more they get these lies about the threat of the “right wingers” out in public, the more people are eventually going to believe them, or at least side with them in seeing the (totally concocted) threat. It will eventually, once the conditions are set, be used to stifle our 1st Amendment rights, for the obvious safety of everyone. How long after that will it take for Nancy to lead her own brand of McCarty hearings, this time with prominent right wing personalities in the hot seat?
The only acts of violence have been committed by crazies, or ELF, or pro-choice wackos, but the clear cut cases condemning the left are ignored, the flimsiest cases tying the wackos to the right wing are exaggerated… It’s a plot, or at least a cooperative effort by the parrots in the media and the idiots in Congress.
I wouldn’t put it past them.

larryp Friday, September 18th at 11:48PM EST (link)the LaRouche folks are set up with their posters and signs and the card-tables.
The posters show Obama with a Hitler mustache. However the “LaRousches-2009″don’t pass the smell test, imo. They are so different from other year’s version. These are Obama folks imo tlaking to people and getting names.
I wonder if there is going to be an arranged Riechstag fire type thing and we will be seeing martial law very soon. It was Pelosi’s comments that make me think that. The Set-up. Also her remembering the shooting of Moscone and Milk is not my Moscone. There is a gap in Pelosi retelling. Better to look it up your self, and see if her recounting makes no sense or application to this time.
you missed the first salvo with the Southern Congress-critter's office attack
JLenardDetroit (Diary) Saturday, September 19th at 1:49AM EST (link)you may indeed already recall that but are speaking toward something larger… but for those who don’t know I wanted to implicitly bring it up…… don’t have link to specific details, someone may add them if you don’t find via google on your own…. These things have started and they will continue to escalate them until they can get one to successfully stick to the Right and the MSM will latch on and carry that water for months to come.

lukematthews (Diary) Sunday, September 20th at 10:43AM EST (link)Their problem is their entire Collectivist/Marxist philosophy is dependant upon a straw man argument. Someone else has to be causing the problem. Now that they are completely and utterly in charge, there is no one else to blame for their shortcomings. This infuriates them because it reveals the internal divisions and flaws in their case. They are wildly casting about for someone to blame. Insurance companies, crazed righwingers, certain Republican individuals.
They are failing precisely because these people and/or groups are not the reason for their intellectual collapse but their own twisted reasoning. The disparate groups that collectively organized are working at cross purposes denying success. When the American people spoke up, it only pointed out their argument’s flaws.
Now Chris Matthews is at sea. He can no longer rely on that straw man rhetorical device to back up his spurious claims. This is what is unhinging him. He looks wildly for a causal agent for their own political disarray. Since there is no outside agent, he begins to look like a nut lashing out at everything in sight. It becomes obvious once you recognize his argument has always been based on someone else’s duplicity. If they cannot be the cause, as is true right now, then the problems are simply, well problems and not nefarious plots by certain groups or people.
Their success is their own worst enemy.

Fox News' Skyrocketing Ratings...
Mason94 Monday, September 21st at 10:25AM EST (link)…I think are really starting to get under the skin of MSNBC. That has to be part of Matthews’ apparent need to become more histrionic and hyperbolic with every passing day.
I used to think Matthews was rather fair and objective — thought he asked both sides tough questions. He always seemed to much of a political junkie to become too wild-eyed or extreme in his ideology.
But again, I think MSNBC is displaying the (quite understandable) behavior of a threatened entity — a cornered animal. Hiring Keith Olbermann, Rachael Maddow gets her own show…then Ed Schultz?
I think Matthews & Co. over at MSLSD gave up even the appearance of trying to be objective sometime last fall…
