As a George HW Bush era young Republican, I suffered the slings and arrows of being a young conservative. After attending a top private liberal arts college and attending a 1st tier east coast law school (as well as coming out of the closet as a gay man), my views softened and I learned how to appreciate the liberal perspective.
After returning to Colorado, I dropped my liberal affiliation. As political independent (with some socially progressive leanings), I try to examine both sides of any political dust-up, but it’s getting harder and harder to swallow what the Obama administration is trying to cram down our throats. The lack of vetting on behalf of the mainstream media for anyone (save Van Jones) has been abysmal. As a gay man, I’m tired of being taken for granted by the Democrats with the attitude “What are you going to do? Vote Republican?”.
It was that attitude that helped draw me back. As a long time RedState lurker, I finally broke down and signed up for an account. The time to start participating is now. How can I help enlarge the GOP’s Big Tent?

What you can do.
Leopard1996 (Diary) Tuesday, September 15th at 6:06PM EST (link)As a 1/2 black conservative, a good place to start would be to talk to some of your friends (both gay and straight, and explain to them, that you believe in the party that gives you more individual freedom all around, not just talk to your fears and then ignore you.
“The accumluated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout, “Save Us!”….and I’ll look down and whisper, “No”…The Watchmen
i started doing that
cumlaude (Diary) Tuesday, September 15th at 6:13PM EST (link)during the democratic primary last year. it’s tough not being a democrat in a room full of koolaid drinkers though. that’s one of the reasons i came here!
Yeah,
Leopard1996 (Diary) Tuesday, September 15th at 6:44PM EST (link)I ge that too sometimes. I started on one co-worker and he is starting to see things more conservatively, for example, 2nd amendment. I pretty much explained to him that it’s easier to cause a massacre in a gun free zone, then one where one may think that someone else may be armed.

arm yourself with facts and history
techsan (Diary) Tuesday, September 15th at 6:30PM EST (link)As I’m sure you’ve observed, there are some great posts on both points. Read. Observe. Share. I’m still gearing up to do more. So far, I’ve been showing up at Tea Parties and Town Halls.
In the end, all we have on our side of the debate are facts and history.
being informed
cumlaude (Diary) Tuesday, September 15th at 6:34PM EST (link)is more than half the battle. i think if most of my friends and colleagues took the time to learn about what the administration was up to, they would be equally alarmed.
Let me be clear about this - hey, does that sound like Obambi?
Achance (Diary) Tuesday, September 15th at 6:47PM EST (link)I believe there is plenty of room for homosexuals among conservatives and Republicans. I don’t believe there is much room for “gay rights activists.” That simply has to be a baseline understanding for homosexuals in Republican politics. The most conservative social conservatives will accept you and value you as a conservative if you’ll allow them the luxury of ignoring the fact that you’re gay. I’ve always thought it unnecessary for heterosexuals to make a spectacle of their sexual acts and preferences, so I don’t know why it is so necessary for many gays to rub my nose in theirs and ask me to say I think they’re cool.
So, the bedroom and the caucus room have to be kept separate and so long as they are, the tent is plenty big.
