Thousands of Detroiters lined up Tuesday, outside Detroit City Halls, to apply for a share of federal, economic, “stimulus” funds. $15 million dollars was taken from taxpayers and given to the City of Detroit to battle homelessness. There were so many people in line that they ran out of applications.
Here are the guidelines for eligibility from ClickOnDetroit dot com:
Application Guidelines
To qualify, a person must have been a resident of Detroit for more than six months, must be homeless or facing eviction and must be able to maintain housing after receiving assistance.
Also, a resident must make 50 percent less than the median area income, which would be less than $24,850 for single Detroit residents and less than $35,500 for a family of four.
No mortgage assistance will be available through this program.
Once applications are reviewed, only applicants eligible for funding assistance will receive notification from a service provider.

ROGULSKI: Did you get an application to fill out yet?
WOMAN: I sure did. And I filled it out, and I am waiting to see what the results are going to be.
ROGULSKI: Will you know today how much money you’re getting?
WOMAN: No, I won’t, but I’m waiting for a phone call.
ROGULSKI: Where’s the money coming from?
WOMAN: I believe it’s coming from the City of Detroit or the state.
ROGULSKI: Where did they get it from?
WOMAN: Some funds that was forgiven (sic) by Obama.
ROGULSKI: And where did Obama get the funds?
WOMAN: Obama getting the funds from… Ummm, I have no idea, to tell you the truth. He’s the president.

Blackwell had been appointed in 2005 by the Democratic</font governor to “turn around” the bankrupt city of Highland Park.
I think the term Democratic</font governor Granholm was looking for is “shake-down”</font

There is literally no private help with rent or deposits from charities like there is with food or electric. In the context of the current system I think it’s one of the best programs out there. There is very little paperwork and at least here only 2 forms have to be filled out and there is a relatively quick turn around time compared to other gov assistance programs and a max number of help of one time per twelve months and a child has to be part of the family unit. The application can be downloaded, mailed in, and no phone interview or in person interview is required. It actually helps people with a temporary need that lets them keep going with their lives. Nobody is writing about it but I guarantee the number of kids sleeping on relatives couches is exploding right now.
I know that wans’t your point but I’d sure rather see money going to keep a family in their apartment when they are about to be served with eviction papers or giving a little boost to to the apartment deposit fund of a family in a shelter than a lot of other things that money gets spent on. The only part that makes me apprehensive is the “service providers” that is probably some type of non profit racket.
