Obama Attacks Cheerios!

Attacking the auto, insurance, investment, and banking industries just isn’t enough for the Obama administration.  Now Obama has sicked the FDA on General Mills over its claims about the popular breakfast cereal Cheerios.

From wcbstv dot com, hat tip Drudge Report:

According to a letter from the FDA General Mills’ advertising violates the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The agency said claims that Cheerios ingredients can lower cholesterol within a certain amount of time, all while providing cancer-fighting and heart-healthy benefits, essentially makes Cheerios “a drug” by their definition. And no drug in this country can be legally marketed without an approved new drug application.

Unfortunately, nothing in this country can be produced, marketed, and sold without the approval of the federal government.

People CBS 2 HD spoke to say this dispute over the cereal’s health claims won’t change how often they buy or eat Cheerios.

“Mostly ’cause kids eat them, they’re fun, round, they’re easy to eat,” said Jennifer Wood of the Upper East Side.

In addition to a warning letter sent to General Mills, accusing them of making unauthorized claims about Cheerios, the FDA has given the cereal maker 15 days to explain how it will correct the claims.  This explanation period reminds me of a few other companies the administration gave a time line too.  Using General Motors and Chrysler as a guide, the 15 day time frame probably reads, do what the administration says or they will take over the company.

God help us!

Don’t they say in their ads that eating thier oatmeal over time lowers cloesterol? Even if they have studies to prove there claims, the Obama Admistration’s FDA willl be sent against you.

Are you sure this Cheerios bit isn't a hoax that went viral?

civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, May 12th at 11:59PM EST (link)

To call Cheerios a drug doesn’t pass the giggle test.

Food supplements are exempt but health claims are made for them. How is it that cereal, which is a food, not fall under that exemption?

Or is this some bizarre argument over semantics started by a FDA employee with too much time on their hands.

And the Obama administration wants to expand regulatory agencies?

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

If it's a hoax, the Wall St Journal was taken in too

Here’s the article on WSJ’s blog. It has a link to the actual letter on fda.gov as well, so if this is a hoax, it’s from someone inside the FDA.

Let’s get down to brass tacks here. How much for the ape?

What General Mills did to piss off Obama… or the unions running it.

I think we had best get used to wondering things like that.
