Volunteers needed?

Today Obama singed a bill that triples the size of the AmeriCops service program. The was bill championed by Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and named after the democrat senator of Chappaquiddick fame.

From My Way News:

The service law expands ways for students and seniors to earn money for college through their volunteer work. It aims to foster and fulfill people’s desire to make a difference, such as by mentoring children, cleaning up parks or buildings and weatherizing homes for the poor.

Bolstering voluntary public service programs has been a priority of Obama, who credits his work as a community organizer in his early 20s for giving him direction in life. The president cited his work in Chicago as an example of how one person can make a difference.

“All that’s required on your part is a willingness to make a difference,” Obama said. “That’s the beauty of it; everybody can do it.”

In a symbolic gesture, Obama, Michelle Obama, and former president Bill Clinton planted trees at a national park in northeast Washington, during which Obama joked:

“Somebody forgot my boots…”

Perhaps one of your brown shirt, Obama youth borrowed them?

AmeriCorps volunteers receive roughly $12,000 for 10 months worth of work.  Apparently, the liberal statists are redefining the word volunteer which Merriam Webster defines as:

1: a person who voluntarily undertakes or expresses a willingness to undertake a service: as a: one who enters into military service voluntarily b  (1): one who renders a service or takes part in a transaction while having no legal concern or interest  (2): one who receives a conveyance or transfer of property without giving valuable consideration.

Some Republicans oppose funding the bill, which passed congress last month, complaining that,

it is too costly and is an unnecessary intrusion by government into something Americans already do eagerly and in great numbers – helping their neighbors and communities.

I wonder how many of those complaining spoke out against the bill’s passage?

God help us!

I didn't know "volunteers" cost $6 Billion. I'd hate to see what paid government employees get.

“Organizers hope to leverage millions of unpaid volunteers by expanding the number who are compensated. If they’re fully funded, the expansions will cost taxpayers up to $5.7 billion in the first five years, with thousands more participants paid modest annual living-expense stipends of $11,000 to $22,000, and education assistance of up to $5,350, in exchange for their service.”

Sounds like a taxpayer funded Obama re-election door knocker group to me.

Leaders don’t create movements. Movements create leaders. Get involved. Your future depends on it.
Govt “invests” YOUR tax money for POLITICAL return rather than economic return.

I am not sure

but I think seniors get kind of shorted with the educational stipend part of it. I remember readign parts of it and thinking they get less.

We are going to see an explosion of bills trying to get more public preschools and maybe lowering the age of mandatory attendance with all of his early childhood positions in there I think.

Gotta get the brainwashing started ASAP

No telling how damaging it would be to the socialist agitprop machine for kids to pick up “Christian values” or a “work ethic” from their parents.

and look at the type that usually take these positions. I know there are exceptions but it’s usually the type that are in no big rush to get a job and they don’t have any type of competitive degree. The kids on a professional tract go to graduate school and the other ones land internships and get entry level jobs.

I fell in love with the first sociology textbook I ever read and I hope when my kitten is old enough to hunt his own mice ;) I can go back to school but I have to say that field attracts some real leftist type of family hating business hating type of people. Those are usually the majors that apply for things like Vista.
