Texas to secede?

Apparently, it is not entirely off of the table. An AP reporter said Perry suggested Texans might at some point get so fed up they would want to secede from the union, though he said he sees no reason why Texas should do that.

From StatesMan dot com:

“There’s a lot of different scenarios,” Perry said. “We’ve got a great union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we’re a pretty independent lot to boot.”

The war of Northern aggression and the passage of the 17th amendment did seemingly unrepairable damage to states rights. I understand the frustration of Texans but pray that the union stays in tact.

Is sentiment in other states, such as Alaska, similar?

God help us!

Those are words the AP reporter put in his mouth

Perry did not say what you say he said. The first paragraph comes from the AP Reporter.

What he said was simply hedging its bets. At the rate the Democrats are deconstructing the Constitution, and as world history indicates. nothing lasts forever. When it happens, TX is a logical place. It might be 300 years from now though. Perry is clearly not agitating for it, just ceding that someday things might come to a head. History says he’s right.

If the Feds keep dissolving the Constitution

wouldn’t the union be null and void?

I think a lot of states would follow Texas’ lead if it came to that point. I would rather not see that happen but I’m at a point where I’d rather dissolve the union than consent to what the federal government is doing now.

We don’t need any more misleading information, especially from me! But to be entirely honest, I’m not surprised about rumors of secession. I hate to say it but our country seems headed down a slippery slope! I hope I’m wrong.

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Wednesday, April 15th at 9:05PM EST (link)

… no joke. I’ve been looking to restart my life. Texas is calling. texas will be for conservatives what San Fran is for gays and Boston is for libs.

We shall gather and start anew. From big one state we shall preserve and perservere and launch our Second American revolution.

Swamp

If you like swamp-like land, just come on over to East Texas. We look just like Louisiana in many places. Not dry heat like San Antonio, although the humidity in the summer can be like drowning on dry land.

Not really much secession talk in Alaska,

Achance (Diary) Wednesday, April 15th at 10:31PM EST (link)

hasn’t really been since the Pipeline days. Back then, Alaska had a Godawful income tax, as much as your federal tax, and all sorts of other stuff. The Pipeline and oilfield workers really didn’t like leaving any money here and the Libertarians and tax protesters and secessionists had a field day. A popular bumper sticker in those days was “Happiness is a Texan going home with an Okie under each arm.” Pipeline got built, populations stablilized and the Alaska Independence Party just faded away except for an ocassional Joe Vogler press release. Then in ’90, Alaska’s first Republican governor, Walter Hickel, decided that he could not accept the Republican nominee, Arliss Sturgelewski, a very “moderate” Republican, in fact the Democrats favorite Republican. Hickel is a very rich man and flipped switches and moved levers and became the AIP’s nominee for governor. He won, so for four years the Alaska Independence Party held the Governor’s office but it was merely a flag of convenience for Gov. Hickel. That explains how the “Todd Palin is a secessionst” stuff started; quite a lot of Hickel supporters registered AIP back then.

All that said, there really isn’t much love for the federal government here because they own so much of the landmass and are so overbearing.

Hmmm...

montanan (Diary) Thursday, April 16th at 12:42AM EST (link)

Montana would be right there with the Texans. I can tell you that I have heard rumblings about what we will do when the Union is no longer viable. I won’t put up any specifics, but suffice it to say that we in Montana are getting mighty fed up with the federal government. Even our Democratic governor Brian Schweitzer thinks the kooks in Washington need to crawl out of our noses. If Texas is to conservatives what Boston is to libs, then Montana is to gun owners what San Diego is to surfers. Seriously…you wouldn’t believe what kinds of weapons are legal in this state….
