With the senate debating a massive trillion dollar bill to squander taxpayer money and expand government control of the private sector, and whatever is left of the free market, our representatives in congress are going on retreats to luxurious resorts. Last week the republicans went to the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Virginia, this week, the democrats are going to Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.
From SwampPolitics dot com:
The House’s Democrats have left town for an annual retreat at the Kingsmill Resort and Spa in Williamsburg, Va., and
this afternoon President Barack Obama will make his debut on Air Force One as president with a quick hop to Williamsburg to see them. The Kingsmill Resort and Spa boasts of “unforgettable golf, luxurious accommodations… and an abundance of recreational opportunities,” our colleague, Johanna Neuman at The Ticket reminds us. Though it’s below freezing in these parts today — with warmer weather promised this weekend.
And these people have the nerve to complain about companies like AIG wasting TARP money on their retreats. What about average Americans, can they afford retreats like these?
Yet, with millions of Americans out of work and Obama “blasting Street executives for their excesses,” some watchdog groups are questioning the venture.
To make matters worse, Republican Mike Pence is defending these boondoggles.
Retreats have their defenders, too. “I believe in them,” says Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), who as chairman of the House Republican Conference helped organized this year’s sessions. His case: They leave members of Congress “better informed, better acquainted and inspired to do the work.”
Inspired to do what Mr. Pence, conceive of new ways to break the backs of the industrious?
God help us!

Air Force One from DC To Williamsburg ?
Kenny Solomon (Diary) Thursday, February 5th at 9:11PM EST (link)That’s less than 200 miles. Guessing they went from DC to Norfolk NAS and chopper to Williamsburg – what a waste of transport and logistics.
What’s the carbon footprint of that trip and did Teh Mess-I-Yah write a check to Algore for the privilege of using an evil form of transportation ?

BTW, golf at Kingsmill is fantastic. Awesome staff. I’ve played there a few times and also at some of the other courses in and around Williamsburg.

RC (Diary) Thursday, February 5th at 9:41PM EST (link)They’re going to use etch-a-sketchs and magic mirrors to figure out some way that the New Deal worked.
It’s a part of history that some politicians are scared to note, but in 8 years of the New Deal, the nation did not emerge from recession until World War II.
The only way that recovery occurs is when people get permanent jobs and an income.
This crisis was caused by the welfare state. An idealogy that thinks that people who are fiscally irresponsible should get to own their homes. An idealogy that is producing a failed solution of spending with the hope that the spending will trickle-down into producing jobs.
The crisis is not ended by government spending, it is ended by people being able to start up their own businesses, and being able to find good employment. And the crisis ends when the freeloaders are cut off.
But considering that the freeloaders are the people who put Obama over the top electorally.. don’t count on the President doing the right thing. After all, Obama didn’t really hold down a real job before being elected.
